I'm beginning to plan a trip down to Disneyland in early March from Vancouver British Columbia. I did this trip four years ago and remember that there was two considerable mountain climbs that have to be done to get there via I5. One being the Grants Pass area of Oregon and the other is ??????? When I find out this second location is there a way to check the weather forecast for the two passes so bad weather could be avoided if possible? Thanks.

You are probably referring to Grapevine on I-5 south of Bakersfield.

The two worst spots are here in Oregon. North of Grants Pass at Sexton summit, and south of Ashland at Siskiyou summit. You should be able to get a road report for these areas here.
http://www.tripcheck.com/Pages/RCmap.asp?curRegion=0&mainNav=RoadConditions It can also be nasty from the Siskiyou summit to Redding in California. You should be able to find the California Department of Transportation (CDOT) I think in Google. That would fill you in on that area. Have a good trip, it shouldn't be bad at that time.

Hi,
If you can wait an extra day, then you should have no problems with the two passes. Just check weather.com and see what the weather will be like. See a storm coming in and either try to beat the rain and snow by a day, or wait it out for a day or two at the most.
They clear this road fairly fast. Even tonight, they are working hard to clear the road as soon as the snow slowed down, and then they re-opened it for traffic.
March should be fine, but the pass near Ashland to Yreka is about 5,000 feet elevation, and grapevine is over 6,000 - I think. If you want to avoid the grapevine, then you can go east from Bakersfield to Mohave, then south to LA on highway 14. This is the way the trains go from LA to Bakersfield, over a much lower pass.
Good Luck,
Fred.

The highest point over Siskiyou Pass on I-5 is 4310'. The highest point on I-5 over Tejon Pass ("the Grapevine") is 4160'.

Good info. Grapevine is also so much farther South, the chance of snow is slim where Siskiyou has a much better chance of snow. The Northern passes are more apt to have bad weather in March than SoCal.

I just did that run over T-Day. Southern Oregon is a bear because you go over 4 or 5 summits of 2-3k feet up and down then the big one. after that it is flat and BORING until you hit the Grapevine which is tough but not as tough as southern OR. Have a great time and plan for an extra day in case of weather.
The Siskiyou summit is the highest point on I-5 at 4300+ the Grapevine is 4100+.
