OTOH, if the HD is new, doesn't that imply there's nothing on it.. not even a registry?

With Windows 7 upgrade disk:
Open regedit.exe with Start Menu Search and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/

Change MediaBootInstall from "1" to "0". (Double-click it and then enter 0 in the dialog that appears.)

Close RegEdit.

Open the Start Menu again and type cmd in Start Menu search to display a shortcut to the Command Line utility. Right-click this shortcut and choose "Run as administrator." Handle the UAC prompt.

In the command line window, type: slmgr /rearm

Then tap ENTER and wait for the "Command completed successfully" dialog.

Then, close the command line window and reboot. When Windows 7 reboots, run the Activate Windows utility, type in your product key and activate windows.

I have been maintaining my own machines for 25 years without help from a shop. This one has reached the point that it is a brick, I can either pay to have it repaired, replace it or fix it.

Pavillion a1620y, Pentium 4, 2meg RAM
XP
XP sp2
Vista
Checks out for W7

Vista was annoying, but not too bad. Then, I assume, something got past Avira and it went haywire. Huge number of URls added to favourites, password changes, fake BSOD. BU corrupted, restore points gone. I had data backed up, so I just reformatted the disc for a clean install of Vista. But,it would start to expand W files and then stall. I tried an old XP upgrade disc and when it arrived from Amazon, W7. I have changed the HD and the Disc Drive. I have reset the bios. Whatever I try comes up with the same result, total freeze while expanding files. I have occasionally seen a couple of error codes, 0x80070002 and 0x80070037. Googleing or Binging these, does not bring up a relevent answer just similar questions.

This leads me too the registry. I have been using cleaners for so long I have taken the Registry for granted. But if it is corrupted, how do I fix it. I have been assuming that a clean install also applied to the Registry, but if it is located on the motherboard, it could still be damaged. I asked about the location of the Registry for a reason and even those who feel the need to insult my intelligence or honesty failed to answer that question. Where is the Registry and where does its contents come from? Does the Registry survive a clean install

8.1 Van, I followed your advise, but Setup only contains two entries
DPI and +SYSPREP. No OOBE. My laptop does. I would appreciate any further suggestions.

Is there a way to run a Reg Repair program without a system file?

Thankyou Peter

Registry is in each Windows OS on your HD, if you have a new HD there should be no registry problems until the new OS is installed. The motherboard only has BIOS info. I would not want to install Windows 7 on any PC or laptop unless it had a Core 2 Duo or better CPU IMHO.

The registry is stored in files on the hard drive, just like everything else. These particular files are located in windows\system32\config
If you're doing a fresh install i.e format/install, those files do NOT survive.
