The border guards always ask if you have any weapons. He lied! He got caught. If he told them he had a gun he would not have broken any laws and would have been given the opportunity to return to the US. I was given that choice on one occasion as well as the option to leave my gun at the border. They gave me a receipt and I had 30 or 60 days to retrieve it at that crossing or forfeit it.
He did the crime and now may do the time.

Well good for our Canadian neighbors. It's their country and their laws. We should be so strong on gun control.

Don't know whether to feel sorry for Mr. Burke or not. Being that he has a concealed weapon permit, I feel that he should be very aware of different gun statutes. Secondly, since he does have a permit, I feel that he should've known that he had the pistol in the console, you just don't forget something like that. Also, since he is a WA resident, I'd expect that he would be rather familiar with the laws of surrounding areas, including Canada. The handgun restrictions are not new, they've been around for years, maybe someone from down South might not be aware of them, but it's hard to believe that Mr. Burke didn't. The reporter made the comment that the only sign at the border crossing is right at the border; I must ask did Mr. Burke not read the sign, or did he feel that it didn't apply to him If he understood what the sign meant, he could have told the border officials that he had a handgun and they would have taken the gun for safekeeping and not had to arrest him for not telling them. Border crossing rules are not to be ignored, no matter how a traveler may feel about them. He will be lucky to only get a year's sentence, I feel sorry for the family but not him.

The vast majority of the guns used for violent crime in Canada are guns smuggled into Canada from the US. You don't need them here and we don't want them here. Leave them at home! There have been gun smugglers that have brought in many of them.. people who go across the border on a regular basis. When they are caught our laws/judges throw the book at them.. and so they should!!

His story is so full of BS and lies, I don't feel sorry for him one bit. He thought he could get by with it and got caught in his lie, so now he pays for his deceit. The reporter is not being truthful either, when she makes several of her statements.

Let's make a deal - the US can stop smuggling guns into Canada and the Canadians can stop smuggling drugs into the US!

Seems fair to me! Especially since a lot of the people in Canada involved in gun violence are gangs involved in drug smuggling.

The person did a very serious crime. No ifs ands or buts. Sorry, but I believe violation of a gun law is a serious crime in both countries.

Ours are different. We are a different country.
