Wickerbill wrote: Looks like to me the world as they knew it ended a long time ago for the Mayans...If they were that smart how come they aren't still around as a civilization and why would they predict beyond their own demise? If they were smart enough to know when the world would end they'd surely know when they would end as a civilization...or figure a way to stick around until 2012...
I don't put much stock in it....but come 2012 if I'm wrong I'll have to say..Whoops!
The Mayans never predicted the end the the world. Their calendar just ends on that day, then starts all over. Their civilization died off due to conquest and diseases from outside influence beyond their control, so they did not have the opportunity to carve a new calendar that starts on December 13, 2012!
I strongly suspect that when they calculated and carved the existing calendar, they did not plan on being wiped out as a civilization by some "visiting tourists" that floated in on a boat from Europe. That's why their calendar goes on way past their demise. BTW, there are still Mayan descendants living today, (from DNA evidence). However, being that they have been politically, socially and economically ostracized for about the past six hundred years they kinda are not currently as noted as they once were.
The 2012 Mayan calendar situation is kinda like getting the yearly calendar that you normally get from your friendly SnapOn tool dealer that ends on December 31st. The SnapOn tool dude never predicted that the world was going to end on December 31st! But, due to the sour economy your friendly local tool dealer goes out of business in September, (before he distributes next year's calendar's), and you have no new calendar for the next year. Certain folks on his route are going to worry that the world ends on December 31st because there is no new calendar!
Some opportunistic folks equate the end of a calendar to the end of the world!

I remember back in the early to mid 1980's, we were all suppose to die one day because all nine (back then we actually had nine planets) planets were going to line up in a straight line and all the gravity was going to pull the earth out of orbit and we were going to sail off to where ever, loosing the sun and our energy forever, effectively killing every living thing on earth, except for cockroaches. I couldn't understand for the life of me why my mom still insisted I go to school that day but as nervous as I was, I got on the bus only to see another day. I can't see that the world is going to end in 2012 but I could be wrong.

I was at the Ralph's grocery store a couple of weeks ago in Palm Springs, CA, and there was this older guy (upper 70's) sitting in the back of his pickup truck with the bed cover topper held up by a long stick.
He was just sitting there in a plastic lawn chair. On the back of the tailgate were these large stick-on letters "December 2012 is the End" or something to that effect. He wasn't saying anything and no one bothered him.
I thought, what a waste of time to be sitting out like that looking like an idiot. I don't know if he would have gone off on some kind of religious tirade or what. If our world were to end at that time, what are you going to do? Just stay close to your family and friends, be happy, and make the most of your 'living' life.
I saw the movie and it was good.
