I think what you are referring to here is that ALL pickups in California are automatically registered with commercial license plates unless it has a permanently mounted camper (or shell) on the back. The fees are significantly different. If you do register it non-commercial by putting a shell on the back and take it off later...if you get stopped by any LEO (they will check your registration) you will be fined for illegal registration.

We are heading out tonight, leaving probably around 7 p.m.
Assuming I get service for my aircard Wed. morning, I'll post back with my experience of whether they checked or not. We were going to leave Wed. a.m., but with this check point, I'm thinking Tue. night may be less busy....we'll see. Good luck out there fellas.

I would bet they are checking trailer weight, to see if you need a non comercial class A license.

All speculation....dont believe it until I see different.
Also, havent heard anything about the registration deal. I do know all 3/4 tons and up are registered as commercial....you have no choice and you dont have to pay anymore money regardless.

If they are doing this what are they doing about the trailers that are over weight, making them stop?

If they are in fact doing it they are likely checking to make sure people are properly licensed- I doubt they are weighing rigs.
More than likely they are just checking the stickers on the trailer, taking a peep at your license and then ticketing or waving you through. FYI- I have personally seen this done before on Interstate 80 and it is not cheap.
If you are driving out of license they can park you. Because of the shear numbers involved I think it is more likely they are just going to ticket everyone unless someone is a jerk.

FYI, all pickups including the smaill ones have to be registerd as comm. vehs unless there is a permanetly attached camper attached. Shell do not quailfy as campers. This is first hand info not heresay.

Well, that's very strange as I do have a smaill (sic) pickup and a full size 1/2 ton. Both have permanetly (sic) camper shells and are both registerd (sic) as non-commercial and therefore my information is not heresay (sic).
