I need to find out how much our two laptops use on an average monthly basis before switching to an air-card. I am thinking about dropping DSL at home and using a Verizon air-card or mifi for home and on the road. I use the computer on-line about 6 hours a day and the DW uses hers about 2. If we use more than the 5 gig/mo allowance it will probably not work for us.

There is also another freeware bandwidth monitor utility called FreeMeter. What's nice about it is that it includes several handy utilities, one of which includes a built in log that automatically records your bandwidth totals. Can be set to track daily, weekly, monthly, or total bandwidth in GB, MB, or KB. You can also export the log to a spreadsheet. To bring up the log window, just right-click the FreeMeter tray icon, and select Utilities > Totals Log. I believe the current version also supports WIN 7. It can be a little quirky with some network cards. A new version is in the works.

We used an add-on program to our Firefox browser called something like Firefox Throttle. If you do lots of downloading, You Tube, or live video streaming stuff you'll run through 5 gigs pretty quickly. In my regular usage of checking my forums, facebook, and e-mails, I've found my usage is pretty low. I've been surfing this site for the last 1/2 hour and I've used 2 mb so far.
It's a shame these data companies (I can't call them cell companies anymore, they deal so much with data now) don't allow us to put a lock on our account to make sure we don't go over the 5 gig. With Verizon you can check your usage but I hear it isn't real-time data so be careful. After you use up your first 5 it's something like $250 a gig! I read on one forum where a guy was watching some Netflix and had a phone bill of $1500!!

It does look like a nice program. I like the built in meter for connection speed, along with the bandwidth monitor.

The NetMeter program, linked to above in the post by Admin, allows you to set a Traffic Volume Alert when the download/upload usage reaches whatever limit you desire to set. Sounds like that is just what that forum guy needed!

I downloaded the Freemeter program this morning. It's a nice little program, but it has locked up and stopped working several times already. Once it locks up, you can kill it and restart, but you lose all of the data traffic numbers that had accumulated, making the program pretty worthless.
Another interesting thing: I am unable to do a Shutdown with FreeMeter running. I need to manually close the program before XP Pro will shut down.
Oh...and from the monitoring I have done so far, I would burn through 5Gb of data way before the end of every month.
