Does anyone know if a United States citizen is permitted to purchase, license, and insure a motor coach in Europe. I would like to make my purchase in March 2010 and use it for the six summer months for several years. I would put the coach into storage each year around October and take it out in March.

This is a couple of years old, but has lots of interesting information. Goggle Lonely Planet and then search for Buying a 2nd hand camper in Europe. Interesting read.
Traveling in Europe is wonderfully easy. We are going back in April.

No - you cannot "license, and insure a motor coach in Europe" as a non-EU resident.
The workaround is to buy from a dealer who will hold the registration & insure it for you. Despite what is said in the LP thread , I think this exposes you to losing the RV in the event of bankruptcy of the dealer. I stand to be corrected, but this is what I have deduced in years of combing forums & talking to Europeans. You could also have a friend or relative in Europe hold the registration & insurance. In both cases, common sense would indicate that he who holds the registration also legally owns the vehicle.
In Germany there is a document called a FAHRZEUGSCHEIN - the holder of this document is, AFAICT, the legal owner. Whether the holder of this document can be different from the registered owner would be one relevant avenue of investigation I have not pursued.
