Just wondering how far from home does everyone travel with their pop-ups? Our's has been from Indiana to Moab Utah. What we have decided is it probably is better to travel during vacation season. We went out there in late September and a few times in colorado the state parks were pretty much empty, maybe 6-10 trailers and we didn't feel real safe. WE didn't see any park rangers at all at a few of them. Just curious to know other people's ideas about how far you travel from home. We are in our mid 50's and still enjoy camping in our pup,but we are considering maybe a travel trailer or 5th wheel in a few years only because we actually like camping after vacation season, and safety is all the sudden becoming a concern for us. Could it be our age!!!!LOL Tara

HI , Tara. My wife and I have gone all the way to 250 miles past Puerto Vallarta, Mexico twice. Plus are planning to be in south TX this year for the winter.
As long as you have a good tow vehicle, good tires and "if needed" brakes on the trailer.
Just pack it up and go.

It is fun and meet a lot of (great, strange, and wonderful) people. Get all the travel maps you need for the trip, internet research for parking..
You are young, and it is good.
Cheers !!

We went from Ohio to Moab, aswell. we took ours everywhere and never really worried about it. I have alsways felt safe. Only reason we got a TT as we out grew the pup. I would go to the same places in my pup that I would go to in my TT. The only exception is that I will now stay at a Walmart parking lot where I would not with our pup.

We went from FL to Vancouver BC for the 86? World's Fair. Out and back in 21 days, because that's all we had at the time (w#%K). Up and down, wet, cold!! Came back and got a hardside TT then.....

That's exactly why we like travelling in the off season. We've camped near Moab a couple of times at Thanksgiving and there were only a handful of people in the parks. Other than the short amount of daylight, these were the most enjoyable times we've had at those CG's. That's also why we boondock a lot in the summer -- to get away from packed CG's.

Our longest trip with a PUP was from CO to Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho, then across to Glacier NP (Canada) and Mt. Revelstoke NP, westward to Vancouver, BC, around the southern tip of Puget Sound, then westward to Olympic NP. For our return trip, we came back though WA, OR, and ID and south to UT. Over a month on the road. I guess the rain doesn't bother us -- it's just a part of the camping experience.

We have averaged about 20,000 miles towed per year for the last 10 years of RV use and this included our pop up and both of our travel trailers. Prior to that time it was usually one long vacation a year (two or three thousand miles) plus a few weekends at local campgrounds. None of my RVs have ever rested from sitting still too long

I travel 20-30k miles a year in my camper, some 200+ nights. But, it's not a PUP. Since I'm a little older and travel pretty much solo, thought I'd address the security issue.

While traveling off season and mostly avoiding RV parks, I'm often in government campgrounds with relatively few campers or sometimes I've got the whole place to myself. I've never FELT SAFER. You see, based on my criminological education and experience, I've come to associate crime with people and opportunity.

It's a lot easier to keep your eye on a couple of campers than it is the coming and goings of an apartment complex or the parking lot of a big box store. Besides, if anything did happen in the latter, it's questionable today whether or not any observers would even bother to pick up the phone and dial 911. Hopefully, they would. But, you can't be assured of that. No Sir. For security against crime, put me in the middle of nowhere with not a soul within miles; where my only concern is falling down and hurting myself. Security is a relative concept. It's a numbers game. Be prudent and don't let it interfere with your enjoyment of camping.

Thanks Eycom, I never looked at it quite that way. I figure not many campers may mean easier for outsiders to come in. But I like your way of thinking. The one time we were really uneasy was on our way home from our trip out west.We stopped at a resevoir in the southeastern part of colorado, and only a few motor homes and a 5th wheel and us,and around 2am a car load of guys that were ,well we think had had too much alcohol, was throwing bottles out the windows and stopping and running up to our campsite and yelling things and throwing stuff and of course my cell phone had no signal,so we were not happy people. But anyway that got us thinking of security. Maybe our days of loving camping in our pop-up, should be replaced with a safer unit that can be locked and the sides can't be pushed in.But either way there is nothing better than camping!!!! Hilton or camping I always choose camping!!
