Just saw this on the Escapees Discussion Forum:

SEIU Rep argued "no one but a union member should be allowed to pick up a hoe or shovel, plant a flower or clear a path for the city"

You can thank the late LBJ for signing the Executive Order that mandated Collective Bargaining for all government workers (except federal). Now we can't even volunteer to help out our cities?

Well, that SEIU doesn't have any boy scouts that have ever joined their ranks?........you know an eagle project is one big deal for a scout who has worked hard to get to the point that they can attempt a eagle project.

The SEIU rep. sounds like he should feel threatened by a Boy Scout.

That SEIU representative needs to do the things for their members that their members are paying for, long term welfare, security and benefits. If all they can find to do is whine about an eagle project here and a project there well time for new representatives I think.

Rant on!

What a conflict. Our President who espouses the need for everyone to become a Volunteer is also indebted to the SEIU President, Andy Stern for helping get him elected. Will it get worse before it gets better??

Putting it as politely as I can, I'd tell the SEIU rep. kindly to observe the mistletoe hanging from the back of my belt.

We aren't allowed to volunteer at my kid's school because of the union...they are afraid that a volunteer will replace a paid position.

and like california has money to pay paid positions, they are broke worse than most....volunteers have long filled the gap between lean and flush years.
