We own a 2006 Chevy Silverado and are looking at RVs. My DH says we cannot pull a Fifth Wheel with a 1/2 ton truck, and that we would need a 3/4 ton truck. Is this true? I prefer the layouts of fifth wheels over layouts of travel trailers.

Our last rig was a 1500 and a 24' cougar 5er. RV was small and light. It was pretty rough on the truck. You would need to get something with a light pin weight for your truck. Good Luck

What is the payload rating of the truck? What is the pin weight of the fifth wheel you are looking at?
I have about 8000 towing miles on mine over the last four years.

It is not the pulling, it is the carrying. Certainly, if you get a small enough pin weight you can carry the extra pounds in the bed. If you are asking about a typical 8500-10000lb 5er then no. The truck would not last very long and you will wind up buying a bigger truck anyway.
PS: Listen to your husband. Get a bigger truck.

Looks like I best stop looking at fifth wheels and continue to look at travel trailers. We need our truck to last us for a while.

every one is giving you their opinion, as long as that is what you want.
stay with-in the weight limits of your truck and you "should" be fine and completely safe. that is more than just my opinion.

It depends on the 5er. A lot of companies make a 5er for 1/2 ton trucks. They're small, lightweight, and don't expect a lot of the fine finishes and toys but they're well within the limits of a 1/2 ton. Just don't expect them to be on par with something like a 40 ft King of the Road.

Depends on what you mean by 'cannot'. You can hitch it up and you can move it, so technically you can. It won't be safe to the usual expectation of safety though, because particularly in extreme situations and emergencies, your vehicle's frame, axle, and tires won't be sturdy enough, and are more likely to fail than the manufacturer will warrant.
With such a new truck you may want to consider that before you overload and risk breaking it.
