The wife wants to take the kids to Ruidoso in Mid March for a ski vacation. While I am a very experienced RV'r and have years of towing experience all of our RV trips have been within two hours of our home in East Texas.

Having never been to Ruidoso I am wondering just what to expect and is this a bad idea or not?

Can I tow to a park in Ruidoso with a F350 PSD (2 wheel drive) with a 30' liteweight TT?

Will there be snow on the ground in the city of Ruidoso? We will shuttle to the ski area.

Park recomendations?

Thanks!

Bad area?

Gorgeous area never camped there.

If you are lucky the 1/4 horses will be running.

Be sure to check on snowfall for the area. Some years are better than others. The last two years have been pretty light, but since they do some man made snow at night, most trails are fine. The only place I have taken the RV is one right off the hwy near the travel stop. I will look it up and let you know the name. Nice folks, and clean park. As far as the horses, they only run late May through September. Snow issues in the city itself have never been a problem, and I have been going to Rui for 30 years. The mountain road however, if you are at the ski area, and the snow starts to come down hard, best bet, is to head down before the lifts close at 4. Hope you enjoy your trip. Ruidoso is beautiful!

Edited to add: The park I was looking for is only listed as RV park when I try and search it... but it is located on the right side as you head up hwy 70 from Alamogordo just before you get to the big travel center there in Ruidoso. (Before you get to the "Y") There is also a park on the right hand side of Sudderth as you head into town. Maybe someone can help me.. it's within walking distance to town, and kinda sits down low in the pines.

RV Parks **RV Prk Reviews

I can not give you a personal review, not been to the Ski area in years. Nor, have I stayed in any campgrounds in the area. A very nice area. As someone said, keep an eye on weather reports and reports from Ski Apache.

It was still called Sierra Blanca Ski Resort when last there.

I remember the road up was just as this statement says: "The road up to the top of the mountain is a 12-mile, 2-lane access road, and the driving is often challenging. You may want to book reservations on the local shuttle service called the Ski Apache Express." My frist trip up was in '65 and it had snowed a lot the days before we went up, but not the day we went. We had to have chains to do so. I believe it was in November.

As for: "Can I tow to a park in Ruidoso with a F350 PSD (2 wheel drive) with a 30' liteweight TT?"
I would think not a problem, if the weather is not bad for some reason.

"Will there be snow on the ground in the city of Ruidoso?"
Could be some, but maybe not. Depends on the weather during the winter and what the weather was like before you get there.

Perhaps you can find some information from the chamber, or just call & ask them about the time period.

This is an El Nino year for New Mexico. In general, that means lots of precipitation, but slightly warmer temps. For folks into skiing, this translates into a fair chance for good snow during the main part of the season, but also for a somewhat early melt.

Bottom line: You should have good snow, but if you go late, you may be out of luck. Call ahead!
