Newbie going to be travelling from Ontario to Texas. Wondering about hotspots for internet. What is your experience? Are park hotspots usually safe? How has everyone protected their computer? Thanks.

Best way to protect your computer is to know the sights your going to then you don't have to be concerned. I pay bills and do banking from many campgrounds with no problems.

We keep our virus protection & firewall up to date. Generally our Wifi experiences at CGs have been positive; some places the connections are slow or nonexistent, in which case we have to wait to do our computering until another spot.

I've had a lot of BAD luck with RV Park hot spots and MOST of the ones I've stayed at had limited coverage as best and no coverage at all in the worst cases. Most of them seemed to have a badly overloaded server so actually accessing the internet at many times during the day was next to impossible. Had much better luck with McDonalds or Starbucks hot spots but they're a PITA also. WIFI isn't a great internet solution for me.

I never have problems with WiFi anymore unless the setup at the park was put up by an amateur.
Don't rely on your PCs built in WiFi adapter. Get one of these at the very least.

Never had a problem, been using wifi for a few years, but many campground only have a single wifi hotspot. I usually ask when i sign in where it is at and try to get a site near the spot. Whrn I am further away I have been using the following:
wifi extender clicky
2007 Forest River Sierra 31fkd (37') dual slides
chevy suburban 2003 2500-8.1 L.4.10's

Fulltiming it since 2004.

Mosst rest areas in Texas haave free wifi. When we traveled to Wisconsin 2 years ago, I believe Iowa rest stops had wifi also. Also inside of the Texas rest areas with information booths, they also have a kiosk where you can see what the weather is predicted from where you are to where you are headed. I think there were a few other states that had that too, but do not remember which ones.

When you're checking in at a CG, ask them for the name of their WiFi. This will keep you from latching on to some bad guy. We're been using WiFi for quite a few years now without any problems--provided we're near the office/antenna. I use a roof-mounted antenna when we're not able to get in close to the CG antenna because of lack of spaces available.

Public libraries are another great source for Wi Fi connections.
Even without Wi Fi, we have never been turned down at any public library in any town we found our selves when we wanted to use a computer to log onto the Internet. None of them ever charged us a dime, although we always gave them a small donation for which they were thankful for.
One exception. Right here in my home town area, the new multi-million dollar public library will not allow visitors from out of town use their computers. Go figure. I'll bet it doesn't give visitors from out of the area a very nice impression of the hospitality (or lack of) in Tunkhannock, PA.
