I am winterizing my parents 5th wheel and cannot understand the water heater bypass valve. I have done this for the past 6 years and
have always been able to turn the valve and not let any rv antifeeze
go into the heater but it would flow out of the faucets.Last year I had trouble and I ended up putting the drain plug back in the water heater and I guess it air locked enough where I did not loose too much antifreeze in the water heater but I could not get it to bypass. If the valve handle is straight back it is in the normal operatering mode When it is cross ways it shuts everything off,And when it is straight forward it also letting water go to the water heater and some to the faucet. Has the valve gone bad?

Thanks Jeff

When the valve is aligned with the pipe the valve is open and when it's aligned across the pipe the valve is closed. There are three different styles of bypass system. All would have a means of closing off the inlet line and opening up the line that goes around the heater. These operations are SOMETIMES performed with one valve but usually it's two different ones. Some systems also have another valve on the hot water outflow side that needs to be closed when the heater is bypassed. This valve prevents the heater from back filling. This operation is usually handled by a one way check valve that has no OF/ON handle.

Thanks for the help. I think my check valve on the outlet line must be limed up and not closing. I had trouble last year but it finally did work. This year it would not. I will take the check valve off and free it up or replace it.

Thanks agian.Jeff
