Brought my RV in for bearing service and it turned into a fiasco. To make a long story short, they screwed up my tailgate and ordered a new one. Now they want me to bring my truck in so they can paint it on the truck.I gave them the paint color code from the dealer. Shouldn't that be enough to get the color right on a tailgate? How off could it be. At this point I don't want them messing with the truck. Thanks

I would have it painted OFF the truck.Sometimes it's good to give the painter like your gas cap if the trucks not there so they can scan it for a perfect match.Usually the paint code should be enough.Seems to me it would be alot easier to paint it away from the truck.

I am with you I don't see why they need the truck. Perhaps they are just going to try and fix up your old tail gate and call it a new gate.

You are exactly correct. It's easier to hang it with some wire and paint it off the truck than to protect the truck from overspray. Personally, I would take this as a tip-off that they don't know what they're doing and make sure it was done by a body shop.

Best of luck.

Tell them that you have to use your truck and just paint it off the truck and you will come back and pick up the tail gate. To do it right it seems to me they would have to put a few coats on it then some clear coats which may take sometime. If they cannot get it right tell them you are going to take it to a body shop and have it done. Could get orange peel if it is to dusty or dirty area where they paint it

The base-coats today are not as good at covering as the old enamels were. They need the truck to make sure the paint matches when they are done. Some base-coats will change by as much as 3 shades by applying one more or one less coat. This is particularly true of the more expensive paints. Also the clear-coat amount applied can make the paint appear to change color by changing the depth till you hit the base-coat. They probably won't order the paint till they have the truck in hand because the paint color can change by the plant that made the truck, even though it is the same paint code. Honda is particularly bad about that. I am glad I retired my body shop because of all the changes being made by the EPA. I still do not like the water based primers, as that can change the finale color also. The old school is water makes rust but that is another story. Take the truck to them to eliminate any problems later.

As stated above ... give them your gas cap for a perfect match ... that is all they need (if they know what they are doing) ...

All the gas caps seem to be black as I remember. The hinged lids also are welded in a good number of the truks.

After forgetting to lower my tailgate after an interruption, it kind of made a U turn. I bought a new tailgate and had it painted off the pickup using only the color code. My truck is firetruck red and I thought it might be hard to match but it came out perfectly and I am a fanatic. They do say that some colors are hard to match though. I was surprised to learn that white was one of the hardest since there are so many shades. You could also leave your old tailgate with them for a match.
