we have a GM mater card for many years and have paid it off monthly.
we recently had some work done but the job was not finished. i auth the person payment of lets say 1500.00 on a 3000.00 job in which the remainder would be paid upon completion.
will now we have not heard from him and i called the CC company to ask if i could block this person from submitting another charge for the remainder of the bill until i auth. it. they told me that they can not do that.
ok, than i said what if i just close the acct out. there answer really surprised me. they said that even on a closed acct. they still have to pay that person or anyone that we ever gave our card number to in the past that submits another bill and than they would help us to dispute it, WHATTTTTTT. i said are you kidding, my acct and now i have to fight with them to get my money back and if the bank doesn't like my answers in a dispute i am still liable for the money even if the work never gets done.
anyone ever hear of anything like this? Told her it sure sounds back wards, why not let the person doing the billing try to PROVE his case before any money exchanges hands instead of screwing the customer right off.
BANKS, unbelievable what they get away with.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in
a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside,
thoroughly used up, totally worn out, loudly proclaiming---WOW WHAT A
RIDE!!!

We had a similar experience with a Bank of America Visa Card. We got the State Attorney’s office involved to get it resolved. It took eleven months and cost us several hundred dollars.

Im surprised they would let you close the account with a balance on the card. I've tried to close card accounts before but had to pay up first. I suppose in your case they are hoping the guy turns in the remainder of the bill so they can get you for the interest and where they really make the moola is when you are late with a payment by a day or so and they can raise your rates making it harder to get paid down. Yeah ,its unbelievable what banks get away with. You said you pay the card off monthly, I think I would have given the $1,500 cash this month and the rest next month, after all it seems you trusted him to begin the job with your money , he could have at least returned the favor for the next month when the remainder was due and only after the job was done. Since the CC company will not give you much help, Why not close the account if you can and tell the person doing the work that you will post date a personal check for him and date it for the date the job will be done. Then if the guy runs the check thru the bank before the job is done, you can put a "STOP PAYMENT" on the check with a simple phone call. I would rather pay the small fee for a stop payment than an attorney fee to fight the ccard company. I may be wrong but years ago, I used to get my check from the clerk a day or 2 before payday because they had arrived, but I was also told that the banks did not have to honor those checks until the date they are posted for thats why I think the post dated check would work better than the card especially if like you said you pay it it off each month you must have the funds in your account to cover it.
