The parts I've traveled have been easy for a C. I've not crossed the state on 54, driven sections in eastern Kansas often, southwest Kansas once. U.S. numbered highways in Kansas are generally pretty good, you just have to deal with the occasional driver wants to cruise 15-20 mph over the limit. They'll pass when they can, but sometimes also when they shouldn't.
I would recommend taking the Interstate loop around Wichita, rather than following 54 through the city.

Rte. 54 should be paved and have lines painted on. Just stay between the lines and you should be okay. Other people drive on it every day.

US54 from Greensburg to the east is a very scenic highway and has numerous lesser known places of interest to stop. It is one of our preferred routes.
