I was prepared to use the bumper outlet when we bought our Attitude. When the dealer installed the hitch, they installed a parallel plug in the bed as well. I wasn't expecting it, as it wasn't discussed or even on the work order, but I am happier having the cord within the bed of the truck.

I was going to put one in the bed but just couldn't drill that big hole in the side of my truck box. It's over the gate for me.

The hole is only drilled thru the inner wall. Can't be seen from the outside.

Plug and play connectors are available so you do not have to cut any wire.

Mine is mounted in the bed behind the wheel on the driver side. They look good mounted on the inside of the bed IMO.

What is involved in a DIY install into the bed in a 2004 Chevy 3/4 ton?

Easy installation. Buy a plug and play type that will 'T' into your bumper connection. You will need a single hole in the bed, I used a Bargman and I think the hole was 2-1/4" hole saw. Simple as can be to install.

What is the item called? I looked at some Reese wiring adapter kits and did not see what I think I am looking for.

EDIT: Found it on Reese website. Fifth Wheel Adapter Harness.

I use over the tailgate method. I considered adding one (my truck has a wiring harness ready for it) but I often (almost always) have coolers, generator, other stuff... stacked in the bed of the truck. Its almost never emtpy when we are taking the rig out. Realized it would be more likely to get in the way and get caught on something. Leaving it the way it is, I have plenty of projects that aren't done, no need to add another.
