I continue to wonder about pulling 15000 and even heavier trailers with 3/4 ton trucks. I own a 2003 Dodge 2500 Cummins but bought a Ford 350 Dually to pull my 15000lb 5er. I pulled an 8000 pound (empty) 5er with the 3/4 ton. I continue to know and see folks pulling even more than 15000 lbs with a 3/4 ton and wonder just how unsafe, if at all, it might be.

You see rigs on the highway almost every day that you know at a glance are over their tow/payload ratings. Lots of people doing it, but that doesn't make it right.
But at the same time, it appears that RV accidents relative to number of miles driven is really quite low. May be just a matter of RV'ers, as a group, generally being careful drivers. There are exceptions of course.

How can you tell at a glance they are over their tow/payload ratings?
Just curious.

Howdy!

Been there done that! We upgraded before going fulltime to at 36XTRM5 (14,000 to 16,000 #s) tried to tow it with my 1996 Dodge 2500 diesel. The truck could tow it but couldn't stop it! Most folks will tell you thats what trailer breaks are for, but that doesn't count for emergency and panic stops. We stepped up to a 2005 Chevy C5500 MDT. Its done everything we need the past three years fulltiming and it doesn't feel like the tails wagging the dog.

Hmm, when I bought my truck in 2002, the GMC 2500HD had a higher tow rating than the 3500HD.

Everybody has their own level of comfort when towing so many believe they have an adequate tow vehicle for their situation and don't concern themselves with what others may think. Many don't have the means ($$$) to upgrade their TV but still want to use their TT/5er so they continue to enjoy camping irregardless of their TV's capabilities. I'm fortunate enough to plenty of truck for my situation and although I see other towing combinations that are suspect I don't rush to judgement as we are all trying to getaway and camp.

It also depends upon the number of miles and the terrain you drive. I would much rather be on the highway with someone who is careful and aware of their vehicle limitations as compared to the idiots who pass me with big RVs traveling over 70, sometimes way over.

When you see a 250/2500 pulling a long Elite Suites, Daydreamer, or other similar high end heavy 5er, you know without checking the specs they are over their ratings.
