Okiegene - I do. I have an old barbers leather strope, 2 pieces of leather, kind of a handle cut out of the leather on one end and a metal connector for the 2 leather pieces with a swivel in the edge of it on the other end. Works like a champ..... Gets my knives razor sharp.

I would take the knives to a professional (look in the phone book or online) since you feel they are in quite bad shape - and then buy a steel ($20 or less). Use the steel every/other time you use the knife. I keep one in the motorhome too. Nothing worse than a dull knife.

the reason I use the three slot chief sharpener is the magnets hold the knife in the correct angle

We are former restaurant workers, so we learned from the cooks on the line how to sharpen knives on a stone. A sharpening stone is small enough to fit in a drawer in the RV, although you should be using it only once or twice a year.
Otherwise, we look for a local who is a professional sharpener. Often they also sharpen lawn mowers!

Once a year I return our knives to store where we purchased them and they sharpen then. They tell me they donate the money they charge to the Food Bank.

Nothing more dangerous than a dull knife.

Check with your local butcher, many times they will sharpen your knives for you. Of course it helps if you are a regular customer. I know after 36 years in the meat business we sharpened a lot of knives for customers. In the meat dept. we always used an oil stone. At home I use the electric chefs sharpener, for at home use these work very well. Solution for wife get her her own knives, lay down the law leave my knives alone. Although this method is not foolproof, it is my firm belief all a woman needs to do is touch a knife it will immediatley become dull.

Sharpening a knife without getting a wire edge on it is an art. And, depending on the dullness of the knife, it takes time. I got tired of constant resharpening of my bait knives that I use when surf fishing so I bought a little $3.00 sharpener at Walmart. This is a little yellow plastic plate that has a pair of carbide cutters on one side and a set of moon sticks on the other.

I am simply amazed at how well this sharpener works! Draw the knife through the carbide cutters to set the edge and then polish it up with the moon sticks. The knife comes out razor sharp.

Oh you don't think that opening all those plastic encapsulated items has a bearing on her dulling abilities? Or taking the kitchen shears to open mail? Or hacking flowers with your French knife?
Thank God she has so many other redeeming qualities, LOL

Try using a product called "Accusharp". Just Google it. Exceptionaly good and easy to use and made in the USA! We purchased ours from Ace Hardware and very pleased with results. Allways use a few strokes of a Steel with any type of sharpner. Its worth the effort. I dont think your Wife will want to use your knives after using the Accusharp, she may class them as "Lethal Weapons". Count your fingers after using!!!

FYI plural of knife is "knives" with a "v" not an "f".

GAWD! another teacher on the forum.

How the heck do you expect people to improve their spelling if you don't point it out to them? Maybe they don't want to come across as being ignorant and welcome the help. Maybe they are mature and can handle being corrected.

I want to leave this earth quietly in my sleep like my grandfather and not like the hysterical, screaming passengers riding in granddad's RV just before the big crash.
