The reason I asked is because a fellow that has a slightly smaller trailer and pulling with a much smaller truck said he got the same milage towing or not. He was claiming 20 mpg both ways.

That fellow has a way of really stretching the truth! No matter what size truck or trailer, what he said is not possible in my opinion - especially the part about it being the same whether towing or not!

Someone told me a long time ago there are 2 things a guy will lie about, his love life and his gas mileage. The guy getting 20/20 is half way there.......

Now you know why popups became wildly popular during the 70's oil crisis!

Wet got an average of 18.5 mpg pulling our 12 foot popup with our minivan on our roughly 4,000 mile Chicago to Glacier NP trip in 2008 (with $4 gas!). If I'd had your rig gas would have cost me an additional $1,000 for that trip alone!

Long time ago, when we started with our first tt,i asked my father that question. His responce was dont buy one, youl never get great milage.Currantly,we have a 35'5th with 3 super slides, and our f350 super duty gets 11.5 to 12 mpg, towing in the 60 plus speed.Milage is part of the package.

I have pulled some moderately heavy stuff- like a JD A antique tractor on a trailer, and have pulled our 27 ft 7000 lb TT.

Driving around town, below 45 MPH, the TV does not seem to struggle with the trailer- it feels lighter than the tractor.

On the highway, where the tractor seemed to pull fine, the TV struggles to keep the camper going at highway speed.

What's the deal???

As everyone said, "yes, weight has an effect, but it's really the wind resistance that gets you". Short or long, your trailer shape is a fairly flat object dead into the wind with a totally flat backside.....looks nothing like an airplane shape!

Its just what you are going to get on most trips I have a Sierra with a 5.3 and see up to 12 pulling my 30ft Futura.(weighs around 6000 lbs) Without the camper I get 17. One secret is babying the gas pedal. I go faster than some of my friends but it does take a while to get to the speed. And no cruise. Would love to use it but its not worth it. Also found ethanol kills the milage as well. In Iowa its the cheaper gas and 89 octane but once I get out of state I go for the 85 octane thats straight gas. It helps some.

The difference of traveling 58mph as apposed to 65 mph over a 100 mile distance is only 11 minutes. I'm just not in that much of a hurry that 11 minutes every 100 miles will make or break a trip. JMVO.

Excellent! Just excellent! Thanks for saying what I was thinking.

Last trip out I averaged @ 13.3 mpg!! There's alot to be said about 55-60 mph towing... not to mention coasting down hill when possible!

On our current trip from MA to FL I was getting 9-10mpg at 62mph. That was until I got through PA & started driving at 65mph & I dropped to 8mpg. The worst was in SC when we got a good head wind it dropped to about 7mpg. That was terrible I just felt like I was in a battle with the wind & I was losing.

I thought I'd be able to coast downhill through the mountains on I-81 on my way to FL, but the damn thing slowed down everytime I tried. Even on the steepest hills we'd slow down when I took my foot off the gas, I'm guessing because of the trailers wind resistance. Is that a common situation?
