Regarding the posts about filling a 30# tank for $11.00 I am having some problems with that. I own several propane companies and we would not be able to do that under any circustances and remain in business. Right now the wholesale price for propane is over $1.30 per gallon and that does not include the costs for delivery into my storage tanks. To fill a 30# tank for $11.00 means that they are charging $1.57 per gallon and at that price they would fill the regular BBQ tank for $6.50. Good luck to all of you who can get that price and I would really love to know the secret of selling propane for less then it costs me.

my time has a price tag that i factor in... my tt has 20# tanks i can get a swap done in 5 minutes at a home depot thats 1/4 mile from here for $18 - 24/7 (self service).

or i can save $5 dollars and drive 3 miles to the 76 station but burn about 30 minutes waiting on the guy to fill my tank and ring me up assuming there isn't a line and i need to go when they are open which usually takes a phone call to confirm.

i prefer the swap but i'm the minority.

Don, it was a few months ago the last time I filled mine, both 30# and both were very empty (I opened the valves to bleed out the tiny bit remaining). It only cost me $26.00 +tax to fill both tanks. FWIW, The U-Haul manager said they price match locally and do it more as a service than for profits because most of the people refilling are also renting equipment, but a rental is not necessary for the propane refill. Maybe the price went up a little in the last couple months, I dunno, but they did quote the lowest price when I was calling around. American Propane wasn't anywhere close to that price and the U-Haul manager laughed because he said that's his local propane supplier, so we assumed American Propane probably marks it up quite a bit for the general public and/or small refills.

Our gasoline, diesel, and CNG fuel costs are usually a bit lower than the national average since we're a producing state. I'm not sure if that affects propane or not.

A real hardware store is usually the best place to get them refilled, at least in the areas we have been in.

Hey "Pops": Assuming both your tanks were empty you took about 14 gallons total and at $26.00 that is $1.85 per gallon. I am familiar with American Propane in Oklahoma City and a few months ago (August) the average quoted price per gallon was about $1.11 per gallon. It would cost American about 8 cents for the delivery to their tanks plus about 19 cents for them to deliver to their customer making a total actual cost per gallon about $1.38 per gallon. I cannot even imagine American selling for less then $1.68 per gallon which would only be about 30cents over their cost. For U-Haul to then resell that propane at $1.85 means they are almost doing it as a loss leader hoping they can make it up because people will come in to rent their trucks. In either case the price is cheaper then I would ever be willing to sell it at any location.

I think it was about 7 gallons each and that's right along the lines of what the manager was telling me. Obviously they don't sell it at a loss but they certainly don't sell it for much of a profit either. Either way, I'm thrilled that they're just around the corner from me. - hehe

You guys got it made. Propane is $3+ per gallon here, just about anywhere you go. A swap tank is about $20.00 to $23.00

perhaps it was filled correctly as propane tanks should be filled to 80% capacity for safety reasons anyhow.
