I switched from a dolly to a tow bar and would not go back. I had a Master Tow dolly and while I traveled thousands of miles without problems I also had three major incidents. I had both tires on the dolly wear unevenly resulting in bald spots with the cords showing before I noticed the problem while on vacation. I had to scramble to get replacement tires. I had a strap come loose while in transit, thankfully only one and not both. The final straw was when a wheel ripped off while traveling on the highway at night. The only way I knew there was a problem was when a saw the sparks flying from the dolly in my rear monitor. We had to abandon the dolly and drive our toad home. Now I tow four-down and feel much more secure.

Slay: What vehicles may be towed 4 down? I don't want to buy vehicle just to tow. Would like to use a Ford Contour.

Thanks to all that responded to my dilema. I see there are definitely 2 sides to the issue. While I am on I have heard it takes a proffessional at least two hours to install the base plate if I go the tow bar route (as well as a few modifications to the car trim)and if you get a braking system (don't know much about the variety of these systems either.currenty using a break buddy. Not happy with it.) that ties into the coaches and cars system that it is six hours labour costs. Any info on this one.? Thanks in advance.

I think you find the "Ready Brake" and affordable alternative. If you have any mechanical ability, you should be able to install most of it yourself. Ready Brake with surge brakes.

This is out first year with a Tow Dollie and we have had no problem.
I have read here that it takes 20 min to get ready to go. I have no Idea
what they are doing it takes me 6min and I'm done washing my hands and on the road. But I do think 4 down would be nice but for us this works great.
Good luck

I tow my car on a dolly. Don't care which way you tow yours, what makes you happy tickles me to death. However some statements are a little far out. I can drive my car on the dolly by myself strap it down in 2 minutes or less. I can unstrap and unload in about a minute. I have been in 2 parks in 5 years where I had to unhook because I was in a back-in. I have a Demco KarKaddy SS with the surge brakes. So if you want a dolly they are not as bad as some think. If you want a tow bar go for it.

I just bought a 2010 Equinox BECAUSE it can be towed 4 down. With the six speed tranny it does not matter if it is 4wd or 2wd. Great vehicle made even better!

I'm a 62+ year old diabetic and started with a dolly. Never again. The 5 min statement is well, I'll just let it go.
