I have found Alaska very harda$$ed about their sport fishing rules, but also very fair.

Some people may think the same of Ontario's MNR. Every year we hear of spot checks @ border crossing of US fishermen heading home. Over limit, no skin to identify the fish & coolers frozen solid to obscure quantities are the usual offences.

Sportsmen hunting or fishing in Ontario may want to check out these reports:

We carried a 5 cubic foot freezer in our 5th wheel in 2007 and filled it with halibut, pike and salmon. No questions at Canadian or US border on the fish. We sure enjoyed it all and are looking to return soon.

On our way home from our first trip to AK we had quite a few packages of halibut and salmon. We were told by US and Canadian border agents game meat and fish in any amount for personal use were OK...of course that was in 2007.

On a lighter side, the agents at our return crossing in Washington State told us that you can take bear scat home, but not beef or poultry (one visitor had passed through a day or so before us and had frozen the bear scat for some kind of study). DH had purchased some moose poop in a little jar thinking it was chocolate as a gift for friends. We had it out when we were inspected. That was OK, but not the dog food and the one orange and one hot dog we had.

Each game district has separate limits, sometimes for the same species in different rivers, so read and abide by the rules without exception, and you'll have no issues.

When you purchase your fishing license up here, be sure to get a reg book for every area you will be fishing in - I think there are 4 or 5 areas in the state? And be sure to read it closely. Not only are there specific limits for each species of fish, but the limits can vary depending on where you are on the river, right down to the number of feet you are from a bridge, shore, road, etc. And the regs are very specific to what lures, hooks and types of set-ups are allowed. It is very precise - so much more involved then where I have fished in the lower 48.

But, having said that, I have yet to personally see anyone get checked, though I know it does happen frequently. Especially dipnetting - which you can't do unless you've been an Alaska resident for 12 months. DH has witnessed whole lines of dipnetters get fined because they had their nets in the water too early/too late.

I've also never heard of anyone getting fined for carrying a freezer full of fish. That's pretty common practice up here. We carry a 5cf freezer in the bed of the truck in front of the fiver during dipnetting. Our limit is 65 fish - so we need a freezer. Just about every site at the CG has a freezer, and those that don't are canning instead of freezing.

One aspect to keep in mind. Once your catch is cleaned and frozen, it is processed fish for personal use. The possession limits no longer apply. We have brought back as much as 20 cf frozen before.

I was wondering when this would come up. I can't recall the exact specification...hope to reacquaint myself with the F&G regs in the very near future!!!.....but whether it's cleaned/frozen, made into filets, etc, after some level of "processing" the fish no longer counts against the "in possession" limit.

Trick is to ensure that you're "processing" an amount suitable for personal use and that the amount of "product" you have is not so much that it approaches a reasonable suspicion of commercial/resale use.

Dennis,

There are pleanty of places (especially on the Kenai) that will clean and flash freeze your catch and FEDEX or UPS it to you when you return home. We have done this several times from both Canada and AK. Bringing it home in your RV could be a problem with keeping it frozen.

There are enough challenges with making the trip up here, without trying to invent imaginary ones. I have NEVER heard of anyone having any problems taking their freezer full of fish back home with them.
