Planning my 2010 trip to the great north west, and would like to do a lot of fishing. Can I bring wild fish back throw Canada and into the United States? If so how much and are some species limited as to what I can bring back? Also can I carry extra diesel with us in the bed of the truck (5 gal. cans)?

Well you could bring fish and game back this year and years past. Limits are by fish and game both daily and in possession.

We brought back Halibut and some Salmon. We cut the Halibut into steaks and one whole Pink Salmon with no problems however no one ever asked about fish. You can have the fish frozen at a professional locker especially the Halibut and they will air freight it home but you need someone to either be there or pick it up. I would not carry more than the limit allows so check the regulations. I don't know about carrying extra fuel as we drive a motorhome but there seemed to be plenty of fuel available so personally would not risk it. Have fun

Some people actually carry a chest type freezer and carry enough fish to help pay for their trip. It is illegal as far as fish and game is concerned. Most locals wouldn't hesitate to report that, but no problem with your legal limit. It is easier to freeze it and have it shipped.
Some processors will hold it in their freezer and ship after you're home.

I do plan to have a small 110volt freezer in the 5th wheel. But were not sure about amount of fish we are aloud to carry back home? I'm planning to fish salt and fresh water.

I don't know of any enforcement at any of the borders for Alaskan caught fish. Huge amounts are hauled out every year. When the fishery is decimated it will end, especially for the Kenai River.

Contact where you are fishing.

Ask about freezing & leaving skin on the fish. I know in Ontario, the fish must have skin left on (so conservation officers can identify the species) and frozen individually for counting your catch.

You may want to contact

BC Fish & Wildlife

Alberta

Yukon

As you'll be passing thru here on your return w/ your fish.

Good info on the Canadian fish. Poor on the Alaska fish. It's only illegal to bring fish down from Alaska in a freezer if you intend to sell it. Your own use poses no restrictions. Generally, in Alaska it's only a "fish in your possession" (and falls under the possession limits) if it looks like a fish and is unfrozen. Frozen, filleted fish are not fish in your possession, so the possession limit doesn't count. Skin on or off makes no difference. Each game district has separate limits, sometimes for the same species in different rivers, so read and abide by the rules without exception, and you'll have no issues. We shipped 6 - 70 pound boxes down this summer and had a freezer in the pickup and RV full. We use it all ourselves.

To be sure I have no problem moving Alaska fish thru Canada I stop at US Customs outbound and pick up an export/import declaration. Lists fish by species, pieces and number of packages, and hand it to customs whenever I need to use my passport. Never had an issue.

I have found Alaska very harda$$ed about their sport fishing rules, but also very fair. When large numbers of fish are present, limits are raised, sometimes overnight, and conversely, when numbers are low they are quickly cut or reduced to zero. We've fished the fisheries for a number of years and are very impressed by their common sense and firm management. Their system, while not always perfect, will ensure a viable sport fishing industry for decades to come. Enjoy!!
