Anyone traveled the route Villa Hidalgo, San Blas, Santa Cruz Las Varas lately? We are wondering if those low flat roads suffered any damage from recent storms. We hope to stop in that tiny village (Menatchen?) to get some banana bread!

Roads are normal for this time of year. BTW asking a question several months in advance is just about useless. I've seen road crews come along and rehabilitate a disaster of a road in just a few day's time.
Three weeks ago the section of Mex 200 between Las Peñas and Chucutitan was undisturbed. Since then a half dozen D-8 bulldozers and a similar number of tracked hoes have moved tens of thousands of yards of dirt. It seems like the state is preparing to make the section of Mex 200 between CALETA de CAMPOS and LAZARO CARDENAS multi-lane. A new road already exists between playa de azul and lazaro (the new road parallels the beach).

A day or two in advance OK? 
We are currently in Maz and leaving either tomorrow morning or Sunday for PV. A month in PV then down through your neck of the woods to Zihuatanejo. We like the coastal route in spite of the topes, but having taken it enough times to realise that a lot of excess water would make a mess! We'd hate to have to back track up via Tepic!

Interesting you should mention "via Tepic". My DH and I travel south via Tepic for the first time. We previoiusly used the bypass via San Blas - Las Varas (hwy 74), but decided to see what all the hoopla is about Tepic. It's actually not bad. The roads thru Tepic are fine. I think I read somewhere that it's a new road. However, once you're out of Tepic, you're going thru twisty roads just like the bypass. We probably saved some time, but we're feeling we still prefer the bypass. Perhaps on the return trip we'll try the Villa Hildago route and try that banana bread - yum.

If you go through Tepic go to Laguna Santa maria del Oro, if you don't have a long rig. Nice campground, nice lake.

How long would that be tcman?
I have heard about the Lake and would like to have a look but if We can't Fit there isn't much point driving down that steep hill!
We are 38 Feet pulling a Tracker so around 50~51 Feet overall , should make the corners but can I Park?

Rob You can make it no problem. It is a nice lake and an interesting day is to walk all around it. There is a resort on the far side for drive ins from Guadalajara. I did some biking (push bike) up the back roads and was interesting. The campsite is a bit of a movable feast in the off season. The area is very popular for bird watchers as the laguna formed by an ancient volcano has provided an unique habitat for birds.
The RV park has a lot of old orange trees which provide an attractor for the birds. The RV ers there are mainly transients for a few days doing exactly what you want to do. The extra driving is worth it. We have done it twice in our 7 winters. did it the first trip as recommended by the Churches.
How was Sproat lake during the last storm?

Thanks 2plus2 That's useful information. If we get out of here early enough in the morning we'll push on through to PV, stopping for the banana bread of course!
We have Spanish Course starting Tuesday so would like an extra day to rest up!

We didn't do the Villa Hidalgo route after but went through Tepic to Compestelo and didn't find it too bad. Bet it would be a lot slower though going the other way--up hill -- behind the slow semis! We saw some awfully long lines!

Thanks Lew,
We just may make it one of Our stops this trip. Always looking for New places to visit. We also may stop at that City with the Women's church and the nearby Ruins! Also thinking of checking out the Volcano Fields around that area!
