The problem with cell-phone-based GPS mapping is that you do not have the maps in your unit - they have to be downloaded from your cell-phone service. That means response can be slow. I think dedicated GPS units with on-board maps are going to be the best way to get GPS mapping for a while to come.

Not exactly sure of what you mean by cell phone based being slow...We use the Verizon VZ Navigator and it is quick and accurate...

Hi, that is if you have coverage, right? As far as I understood, the current Google approach needs to access the map data more or less continuously; there seems to be no way to cache a map for the current route beforehand. So... no coverage, no navigation.

Best regards,
Joerg

the NEW Google Navigation for phones with Android2 OS, will store the route info and maps in memory encase of 'blind spots' on the route with no coverage

this new program which offers street maps & satellite pics & 'street view' showing you the exits and lanes to be in when entering or exiting freeways and intersections

only works on Android2 device, the Moto Droid on VZW being the first one comming to market, next week on Fri Nov 6th

several more will be on the market by xmas for both vzw and other carriers,

one thing to remember..this a smart phone, it REQUIRES a smart phone data plan on the account, the least expensive one is $30 per month on top of your regular voice plan

$70 every few years is a lot cheaper that $360 a year

How ever if you are ready to get a smart phone a new android2 device just might be right for you

Options, always have options, and the journey goes much smoother

Gdlow, I was with a friend with a cell-phone-based GPS once. We were looking for directions to a restaurant, and we found the restaurant before his phone showed anything. That may be unusual, but the fact is that a cell phone GPS has to communicate with a central location to get all its information, while a dedicated GPS unit has all its information right in your hand all the time. It's bound to be faster.

Which is fine if A. you have Verizon and B. you're in their coverage. Many of the newer phones have GPS built-in, but I like a dedicated device. Bigger screeen, more functions.

This. Screen size is very important to me. as a last resort device, maybe.

I'm quite happy *not* reporting my current location or destination (or anything else) to the likes of Google. Actually I don't use *anything* from them, including their lousy search engine.
