Hugh Roberts, former sports editor of the Birmingham Age-Herald, is credited with coining the phrase "Crimson Tide" in an article describing the 1907 Iron Bowl played in Birmingham. The game was played in a sea of red mud with Auburn a heavy favorite to win. Alabama held Auburn to a 6-6 tie, thus graduating to their newfound nickname.

Officially, following the 1930 game versus Ole Miss, Atlanta Journal sports writer Everett Strupper wrote:

"At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity. It was the first time that I had seen it and the size of the entire eleven nearly knocked me cold, men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size." Sports writers continued to refer to Alabama as the "Red Elephants" afterwards, referring to their crimson jerseys.

Hey Bags,
How 'bout them Bearcats. Your man Collaros went 15 for 17 for 253 yds and 3 TDs and ran for 52 yds on 11 carries. He's only a red shirt Soph. I heard on the news tonight that the plate they put in Pike's non-throwing arm last year was damaged last week. They replaced it on Tuesday. He may be able to play next week, but I don't think we'll lose much of he doesn't. The Cats play at Syracuse next week.

Ok, here are my final comments: Had Tennessee had a halfway decent kicker, they would have beaten Alabama by 1 point. However, a win is a win and Bama (a team I like and drink my morning coffee from a Alabama mug, just didn't look lake a #1 or #2 team yesterday. Strictly MHO! Yeah, Iowa scoring that final TD was something else! What a defensive struggle yesterday in East Lansing. My boys form PITT are looking good, especially QB Bill Stull. Tony Pike (Cincinnati) is an excellent QB, but when Zach Collaros (Steubenville Stud) comes in, the "Bearcats" are still strong offensively. My Alma Mater Toledo lost yesterday! Now for the "Buckeyes", I still have lots of love for them and they are moving in the right direction. When QB Terrelle Pryor finally gets his act together, and he improved yesterday, they could beat anybody! I think Ohio State will be much better next year, both offensively and with an even better defence. Michigan learned yesterday why clobbering Deleware State the previous week meant absolutely zip. Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio would have given Michigan a better game than Deleware State. Michigan is two years away from being a very good team. It still looks like Florida vs Alabama for the National Championship. Bagman.

Geaux Tigers!!!

We're still not firing on all cylinders. This is like watching a V-12 engine trying to fire on all 12 cylinders. Each week LSU starts firing on one more cylinder. The question is will be firing on enough cylinders in two weeks in Elephant Town? We darn well better. That said, a "W" is a "W" and that's really all that matters at this point. I sure wish Les would figure what he's going to do at the quaterback position. This two quaterback system is counter-productive IMO.
