I have a 2004 v8 silverado 1/2 ton pickup with factory heavey duty springs. I have a class 111/IV hitch. I am wanting to buy a 21 ft. Hybrid. Will I need a WD. hitch to tow it or will the one I have be OK.

i would say, yes. i have a 5.3 v-8 Avalanche and i need a WDH for my 23' hybrid. if you were towing a 17' one, maybe you could get away with it.
it's the tongue weight you need to look at.
you can't go wrong with a WDH. good ones will also provide anti-sway.
for me it was worth spending $400 for peace of mind.

If the trailer GVWR is 5000 or more I would reccommend a WD & antisway hitch.

You may be able to do without it but a quality WD/Sway hitch will vastly improve your overall towing experience. Happy Camping!!

I agree - Get a "good one" (Equal-i-zer or Dual Cam) and take advantage of built in sway control.

When in doubt, check your owners manual.

To determine if you actually NEED a WD hitch it all depends on WHICH Hibrid trailer you get. Your receiver is probably rated for between 500 and 600 lb. without a WD system installed. There are a LOT of hybrids that have a fully loaded tongue weight that is less than that but there are ALSO a lot that are heavier than that. Use the trailers GVWR and take 15% of that figure to find the maximum tongue weight when the trailer is fully loaded. Now if you want to discuss SHOULD you get one, the answer is yes. If for no OTHER reason, it'll make the truck RIDE A LOT better when towing. Good luck / skip

Moodyblue..... I have a 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 Crewcab 2WD and have been towing a 23' Jayco Jayfeather 23B HTT. I've towed it both with the Equalizer WDH and without (yikes)....BUY THE WD HITCH!

You may be mathematically capable of towing your trailer by weight, but don't underestimate the effects of cross winds; 18 wheelers passing you; etc.... My Equalizer WDH really made a big difference in the Quality and Safety levels in towing. Ease of towing and less stress from not swaying/bucking is priceless.....besides, you never know if your next trailer upgrade needs it anyway.

My two cents (sorry for shouting)

ditto on the WD hitch
I'm towing a 23B also, and use it all the time except for just moving it from here to there in town, and a drive across our little town takes about 5 min and thats from one end all the way to the other.
It gives me piece of mind out on the highway.
You might work a deal out with them and have them throw it in for next to nothing.
When we bought our Dutchmen they threw in the ball, WD hitch and anti sway bars for nothing.
