I think the gas cap thing will not happen if you go to a "Test" only smog station. They can not do any repairs, just test only. But you have to ask about retest cost if it doesn't pass. So what do you do, take your chance at a test only station, or go to a smog shop that does repairs and maybe have to buy a gas cap? Any suggestions?

Most test only places offer free retest. You would go get a new gas cap and have it retested for free. I have a locking Ford gas cap that I installed after we bought our rig. The smog tech didn't mention any problem with gas cap.

I take all my vehicles to a smog center located in Stockton, CA, near the intersection of Miner and Wilson Way. My 89 Sprinter failed its last test due to a new fuel tank pressure requirement. The engine itself had zero issues - and yes, pulling the "doghouse" saves a surcharge of $15.00. I don't recall the tech attaching any wires/sensors to the engine, however; he did visually inspect for the presence of mandatory smog components. Turned out that the manufacturers used an undersized copper tubing to splice the vent line. I replaced it and retested without any further problems. The entire test cost me 62.00 dollars.

All this smog stuff makes me sick, thanks goodness I live in MI. My '87 would not pass in CA as the 2 air pumps are removed as well as the cat, I also have an edlebrock carb, not the factory ford electronic metered one.

On newer one the gas cap thing turns on check engine light and kicks a code to the effect of evap sys leak. If you cross ref the code it kicks it might narrow it down a little.

Here in central califoria we don't have to dyno smog our cars yet. But the used class c I recently bought up here came from the LA area origionally, and the DMV told the previous ownwers that they had to smog it in LA, or transfer it to their address in Cen cal so they could smog it up here. Then they could sell it to me. I was concerned a little because they put headers on it. All turned out well in the end and I'm going camping at the beach this weekend with it.
