What would be the earliest you would try to do the Outer Banks if you wanted to wing it without reservations? Staying in the NP would be preferred since power isn't required, but we realize at the northern end will probably have to stay in a commercial campground.

Would it make a difference on the dates if I were going in a 35' fifth wheel or a truck camper (I have both ).

If I am not mistaken, You can not make reservations at NP CG's on the OBX, with exception of Ocracoke.

When we were there July 2008 the NP CGs were very under utilized. I figured it was because it was so hot and folks wanted AC, therefore opted for commercial and electric.

In 2007 we went to Rodanthe and stayed at Ocean Waves CG without reservations on Labor Day weekend. I think after Labor Day, there are lots of vacancies.

The NP CG at Hatteras has sites in the dunes, some down low out of the wind, and some up high that catch more wind and have a better view, but they are many yards back from the water.

In June a few years back we stayed at the NP at Oregon Inlet without hookups and while we were concerned about lack of a/c since no hook-ups it was quite comfortable due to the ocean breeze. We were there nearly two weeks and only cranked up the generator a few times in middle of day to cool off RV. We are looking forward to a return trip in not too distant future.
