We likewise just finished a Workamper position with the US Fish and Wildlife at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery as previously mentioned by Don/Shar - we highly recommend this facility and found it to be very rewarding and educational. Beautiful area!!! We are now planning on a volunteer position this winter with the US Forestry Dept. at the Ocala National Forest in Ocala, FL which provides a FHU site including monthly allowance towards propane.

Is there a website for searching out these workamps, or do you just inquire at the ones you are interested in. We are mainly just looking for free RV h/u. What is the best deal to strke for this? We are not at all experienced with this.

We often find volunteer positions on volunteer.gov/gov They usually outline the type of volunteer position needed, number of hours expected and what they provide in return. There is always a contact person if you have questions not addressed in the ad. (It is always best to get all pertinent information up front . . . less surprises when you get there) Some subscribe to Workkamper.com as well which offer paid as well as volunteer positions.

On occassion we have decided we want to go to a particular location/state and then just contacted several agencies in the area individually either by email, phone or mail and went with whichever one got back first. After all, the best volunteer position is when you are where you want to be and doing what you like to do.

We have been full-time and volunteering since 1999 and still loving this lifestyle!

We have wheels

Just read this article about Workamping. Not everyone works at an RV Park or Campground. There are many opportunities to work seasonally or year round if that fits your needs.

Here is a link to the page for work camping in CA State Parks. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=911

I volunteer in our local Cuyamaca State Park in San Diego County, but as a hike leader. We have a very nice campground with people that usually take on about 3 month stays. The California State Park system has many beautiful places. Everything from the Ocean to the mountains to the desert. We could use some help.

The "Best" place is wherever YOU want to be and where there are nice people who treat you with respect. Some will try to abuse your goodwill and it is up to you to set guidelines on what you will and will not put up with. If you don't set guidelines you are likely to be abused and not enjoy it.

We have enjoyed volunteering with Alaska State Parks and the Department of Fish and Game. However, they are not for everyone since volunteers are often left on their own - we like that aspect but some volunteers don't adapt well without guidance. I recognize others like the National Wildlife Refuge System, however, we did not enjoy our time at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. We left a list of 50 reasons why we abandoned that site. The main thing we demand is honesty and I'm sure it is no surprise that some government workers have difficulty with the concept. If it doesn't feel right to you then let them find someone else to be there.

Workamping has been alot of fun for us. You will meet people you will love and a few that will lie from the get go. Always get it in writing what you will be doing and pay, hours, and site and possible bonus. Its not rock solid but at least you know what is expected of you and them as well.
I've been to the Smokie Mnts, The Chesapeake bay area, and Tenn. and Florida. I plan to go west in the summer. We like our life and stay in touch with alot of people we have met along the way. Winter spots will be hard to get. Everyone wants them. Summer jobs are pretty easy in the upper states. Workamper and Koa are two good sources. Good luck and enjoy. Don't wait do it NOW.....

We've never workamped but I had saved this website for future reference, National Forest Volunteer Host Positions. Has anyone tried this way to find positions? I liked the fact that each description tells you what is furnished...some just partial uniform and some FHUs, etc.
