We don't fulltime, just parttime but we do homeschool. I have a boy that sounds just like yours (11)...homeschooling is the BEST. No labels. We focus on the three R's (reading, writing, arithmetic) and learning how to communicate in writing, verbally, etc. The rest is just FACTS, shoved in, quickly forgotten. With the internet, information is a click away for anyone. You go, girl! He will "likely" want to settle down around 13/14 for the high school years. I have a 13 yo and they just seem to need a little permanence, so you might consider giving him that in those years but that doesn't mean you have to live in a sticks and bricks! Maybe you could be on someone's land in the country? Tons of ideas and as soon as he is launched, you head on out again. Wishing you the best!

We have been full timing little over 3 years now, I am now 43, DW is 44, and our only regret is we did not start sooner! We are seeing more an dmore younger fulltimers or extended RVer's. Congratulations and hope you enjoy every minute.

I have no problem "teaching" my child because for the most part, they only really learn for a few hours a day anyway. Attention spans are usually pretty short.

But I really think it would be neat to say "okay today we are learning about the Grand Canyon- oh and there it is!".

Life skills are more important to me than book smarts.

JMHO of course.

I agree with you 100%! You are the mother, and you know how to raise your child the best. Just think of the many, many things you will be showing them in person...not just out of a book!

Nature? Hey, you will see a bunch of that.

History? There is lot's of that to easily show them too.

Government in action? Think of all of the states and Providences you will be going through. Visit the capitals, let them see it in action (the good and the bad of it.) And when/if you get to Washington DC, wow! Much to show, and just about all of it is free....no admittance price to any of the national sites there...including the Zoo.

Geography? let the child plan routes where you are headed.

Math? have them add up the miles you travel. have them figure out the average miles per gallon you travel. have them track the costs of food, gas, campground costs.

Science? take them to Yellowstone and let them see science in action. have them track the weather. have them track the movement of the moon and stars.

And remember, Canada and the US have the best FREE public libraries in the world. If you stay in one place long enough, you might be able to buy a library card to use. I've seen many libraries in the "States" in which you can buy a library card for $10-$20 per year (some it cost more). They have on-line resources which you can access anywhere you have the Internet with your library card. The library in the area you are in may have some of these, and if don't have a library card yet, now would be the time to get it. PM me and I think I can help you out if you need it.

As others have said....YOU GO GIRL! Enjoy it...it (having a young child) flies by way to fast. Good luck Karebear. --Dave

That is because most fulltimers ARE older! That works out well for us though, because they are a fine group of people, and they typically love to pass along their wisdom and knowledge. They are a great group to be a part of!

But you are right that somewhat younger people are finding out about this secret of fulltiming. I am 45 and my lovely copilot is 36, and we started fulltiming a bit over two years ago. I was telecommuting most of the time, so I figured if they didn't care if they saw me, why be forced to live in one place! We have traveled almost 26k miles so far, and have had the best time. It has far exceeded our expectations.

We have met quite a few young fulltimers - TechNomads (like myself), artists, workampers, seasonal workers, people taking sabbaticals, young retirees, and so many more. They are out there!

In fact, a group of us are getting together for a rally in March in Texas. We are an odd group, but we know how to have fun! Here is where a few of us hang out - NuRVers.com

Good luck with your plans - don't let anything stop you!

Thanks for all the great advice and kind words. I really look forward to full timing with my son.

I also look forward to meeting some of you "on the road".

I plan on taking my laptop and blogging for my friends that I leave behind in -25 weather.... (owch)...

Most people I have talked to about it either think Im crazy or are seriously jealous that I have chosen this path.

I think it's totally exciting and can't wait!!

Thanks again, you guys are all awesome! Im so pumped just reading your replies!!!

Just put it gear and go!
DW and I quit professional jobs at 50 to go full timing and we are still at it 17 years later. Yes there have been financial and other bumps in the road, however worth every lost career dollar!
We have met many along the way who were home schooling their kids and our observation is that, on the whole, they were better mannered, wiser and more adept socially than most of their Public School "puppy mill" counterparts!
By all means take the road less travelled!

congrats... we're younger than you and hoping to do the same thing in the next couple of years, we were able to spend 3 months Rv'ing this past summer and just about everyone thought we were crazy to pack up and head out on the road with my wife pregnant and two babies, but I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt, it was by far the best experience we've had thus far as a family and can't wait to get back out there...

As you mentioned, we've all experienced too many friends that have big plans yet die way to young to experience them, why wait, we don't know if we're going to be here tomorrow!

Hey, this is my first post. I am 36 and my wife is 37 and we are leaving in June 2009 for our full-time life. We have gotten tired of our daily life and simply need a change. So we are going to "roadschool" our two boys (ages 9 and 5) and live life while we can. After watching my father get cancer at 45 and die at 55 I know life is short and I can not waste a single day.

We can live life always wishing we would have done something or we can just do it and figure it out as we go. I don't want to look back 10-20 years from now wishing I would have done it earlier. Wish us Luck!!

I'm planning on leaving in 2-3 years when I pay off the RV and car. I have 2 kids who are going with me also, who are homeschooled.

See you on the road!
