They are a company which contracts to operate campgrounds for the US Forest Service. They are a for profit company and the positions that they call hosts, are actually paid positions where the employee cleans toilets, collects fees and a lot of other things not usually associated with the typical volunteer host position. I have not, and will not work for them as from what I have been told by friends who did work for them, the pay is very poor for what they expect of you. I have not direct experience you you may want to check them out for yourself, here.

We worked for them at Juniper Springs in FL one year and Kirk nailed it on the head. They pay the state minimum wage and expect 40 hours of grunt work. You may be required to work split shifts, depending on the CG, but we were. We started at 8am and finished at 8pm, when we locked the gate. They charge you a nominal fee for your site and utilities. I would go back with them but the DW is adamant about not returning to work with them.

I have not worked for them, but did have a bad experience with them at the Buffalo Crossing Campground in the Apache National Forest, AZ. I had camped at this campground several times over a number of years and was always told (by previous hosts and Forest Service personnel) that fees were collected when the campground host and the fresh water tank were in place. When I got to the campground in early May 2007; there was no host, no water and no sign indicating that the fee program was in effect. Early the next morning, the host from one of their other campgrounds showed up and wanted to collect the fees from those that had stayed overnight.
If this is how they run their business, you be the judge of how they might treat their employees?
Safe travels!

Or were they just putting the fees in their own pockets?

Kirk and Dianne,
Sorry I did not see your questions sooner. The problem I had with this is that in the past, the policy was that the fees were collected when the Camp Host was on site and the water tank was available to fill your drinking water tanks. The Forest Service website and previous camp hosts had always indicated that no fees were charged the remainder of the year. In fact, I stayed there one time when the camp host was there but there was no water and they did not charge me until the water tank arrived.
As I mentioned in my previous post, there was no camp host on site {no firewood for sale), there was no water, and no sign indicating the fee program was in place or envelopes to self pay. As I recall, there was no toilet paper in the vault toilets and the person that drove through to collect the fees did not bother to some and check the condition of the facilities.
To me it is like someone driving through the dispersed camping areas or Walmart/Flying J at 6AM and saying you owe them for the nights stay; or a campground wanting to charge you for full hookups when the water, electric and sewer didn' work.
The day after I complained to the Forest Service District Ranger, the water tank was in place. I also found out that the Camp Hosts were actually in a nearby campground being told to cool their heels that they weren't needed to report to work yet.
