I have assisted on lots of lap bands, and it is a great surgery. Quick, easy, adjustable, reversible, effective.
I would not have a gastric bypass myself. Seen plenty of those, and the post-op problems. It works by creating a chronic malnutrition state, so you always have to watch vitamins, especially D, and other nutrients. As a last ditch chance for someone who has failed every other diet and surgery and still has severe health problems secondary to morbid obesity, it is the only option. But there are better options for most people.
The newest, and most recommended procedure now is the gastric sleeve. It is done through the laparoscope, and the large curved part of the stomach is just stapled off and removed, leaving only a narrow tube of stomach. It works much like the lap band, without many of the side effects. And it removes the part of the stomach that releases ghrelin - the hormone that causes hunger.
Mark Pleatman has the lowest price in the nation, but there are many very capable surgeons who do the procedure. But if you look into it as an option (or for any procedure), make sure the surgeon specializes in bariatric surgery and has done a large number of successful ones.
Any of the weight loss methods, once successful, will decrease or eliminate health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, back and joint pain, reflux, and heart disease.
Congratulations to those of you who have lost your weight, and best of luck to those of you who are trying to - whether diet or surgery.
