RE: What do you read on the road?

"The Adventures and Misadventures of Maqroll" by Alvaro Mutis (in translation). Been reading it for 3 years now. BUT we go to the Oregon Coast a lot, so rainy days go hand in hand with walks on the beach. Reading is therapy.

RE: Wind and my Carefree electric awning---ouch

Hmmmm. Two TTs and 9 years and I've never taken out the awning on either TT. Sorry about your problems....no answer for you. Also two webbed chairs for sitting under the awning. Never used those either.

RE: no WiFi in Oregon State Parks

Oh wellll. But then having wifi isn't really one of my priorities when camping at a state park, especially one in Wash or Oregon..There's too much to see and do and not sit around on my computer all day like I do at home. It's amazing to me that some people are more worried about having wifi and phone service, than a nioce site or a good view.
Well, you're right to an extent. The reason we stay in commercial parks now and not the state parks is my need to have to communicate with my caregiver on the net every morning. Of course we don't mind staying at Winchester Bay, Newport Marina, etc. After many years of boondocking and limited facility state/county parks, it's definitely a change....and not so bad at this stage of our lives. Back in the day, I would pretty much have been unable to RV. Now, with WiFi, I can. So downsides get matched by upsides in this life.

RE: Where you going this weekend?

Lotsa short trips planned.....between the couch and the frig with an occasional diversion to the loo. It's opening weekend of college football!!! Then, end of next week, off to the Oregon coast for a couple of weeks.

RE: US 50 between I 15 and I 70

Most folks use 6 below Provo through Price to get to Moab, but if you opt for the I-15/I-70 route, 50 is an excellent shortcut....as is 28 south through Nephi. 6 to I-70 and Green River is the shorter route.

RE: Which Natl Park in Southern Utah

Well, my viewpoint is a little different. The parks are known for hiking trails and scenery. Kids sound a little young for hiking and the scenery can wear thin after a bit. May have to visit more than one park to keep attention up. Capitol Reef should maybe be on your list. Not the same scenery, but more to do for kids, I think. As a veternarian, might consider a visit to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab....both interesting and educational for the kids. Unless you're into hiking, it doesn't take that long to see the accessible attractions in any of these parks. It would be kind of setting up future visits for the kids.
What might make it more interesting are the guided tours where available.
Shouldn't have any difficulty with finding motel/hotels in any of these areas.

RE: Passport Renewal Time

Some better than others. Applied for renewal in early June, got it in mid July. Wasn't going anywhere, so didn't matter. Probably had to run my mug thru Interpol and Disneyworld. Thought about the card, but BW wants to go to Scotland. I told her to go ahead....but it didn't work.

RE: A couple RVing, If one passes, what should the other do?

I believe there is a Good Sam emergency plan as well. Yes, it's called EA+. I carried it for a couple of years and in my current situation will probably sign up again. Believe it's $70 or $80 a year.

RE: Idaho

Everything mentioned so far in central or southern Idaho. Wonderful stuff up north...Farragut, Heyburn, Priest Lake....all state parks. Farragut is terrific on Lake PDO......Coeur d'Alene and Sandpoint great towns to visit. Be sure and stop at the first rest stop you come to in Idaho no matter where you enter. They have an RV park brochure that is very good and very few, if any, parks are omitted.
Should point out that we visit all these parks, but stay in FHU parks like Blackwell Island, Red Rock, Ambassador, McCall Resort. We live in park-like environs, so look for amenities when we get away.

RE: Longevity of your diesel tv

Kind of an odd question. It will last as long as you want it to last. Depends on so many things. My '01 Ex has only 62K miles and will outlast me by a long way I'm sure. Everything is original, normal service only so far. Just went through the 60K service, brakes and all running gear still in excellent condition. Only reason the tires aren't original is because of age, not tread wear.

RE: Compare NE coast to OR coast

I was raised in Seattle and my folks had a house at Yachats for years, so I love and appreciate the Oregon coast. For the past 35 years, however, I have lived in Maine, near Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Both the Oregon and New England coasts are wonderful, but in very different ways. Oregon has the crashing surf and lots of sand beaches with major rock outcroppings. Beautiful! No question about it! Maine in particular (and to some extent NH and Mass) have a very different shoreline. The Maine coast is rugged, rocky, and convoluted.....with tons of inner harbors filled with beautiful sailboats bobbing on their moarings. On good days, the harbors and open ocean are covered with boats under sail...very pretty and fun to watch. The backdrop for this are beautiful historic communities like Camden, Port Clyde, Boothbay, Stonington, Somesville, Northeast Harbor, Bernard, Southwest Harbor, etc., etc. All filled with wonderfully maintained homes that date back to the 18th or 19th century. Don't expect a Highway #101 to take you along the NE coast...to really see it, you have to drive secondary roads down peninsula after peninsula. When I spend time in Oregon now, I think "My God, these towns are tacky and ugly, but the ocean is spectacular!" When in Maine, I think, "My God, these towns and harbors are wonderful, but I wish the surf was a little higher today." The northern NE and Oregon coasts are very different....and special in very different ways. MaineDon
Excellent comparison....what I was looking for. Thank you.

RE: Compare NE coast to OR coast

No offense, Tom...but I lived in Marin County for 15 years and San Diego for 7 years and I probably won't be returning to CA unless I have to. It is a beautiful state for the most part, but....... Nice thing about Oregon is that the ocean beaches belong to the public for the most part.

The state parks are nice, but the Newport Marina is right next to the Rogues

RE: Traveling Scenic Hwy 12 in Utah

Please don't let the Mountain Directory spook you. Yes, they do a reasonably good job at being objective. They list all the appropriate grade % for instance, but often the grade is so short you don't even know it's there. It's an OK guideline, but second opinions are worth a look.

RE: Dilemna and Need Suggestions

I don't think it too late for the OR coast until late October into November when the storms really start rolling in. If you opt for the Flagstaff area, try Fool Hollow State Park in Show Low. Nice park with good, paved sites, relaxing and the Mogollan Rim has a lot to offer in our opinion.
I think, however, that you should still be able to go almost anywhere end of Sept and early Oct. This is when we usually go and we've gone all the way up to BC in this time frame without weather issues. We're going to the OR coast mid Sept this year because of commitments early Oct in Wyoming, so a little earlier than normal.

RE: Traveling Scenic Hwy 12 in Utah

Here's another good website on Hiway 12.
My opinion:
If you're using your RVs to haul stuff from point A to point B, seek alternate route.
If you're using your RVs for adventure and to see the country and have fun, take this route. To miss it would be to miss one of the grand drives in the west. It may make you a little nervous, but you'll get used to it and over it. Many, many RVs use this route.
