RE: Grand Junction, CO to Rock Springs, WY

Skip describes 191 well. There is also a pass on CO 139 (Douglas) that is a typical Colorado pass on a two lane road....not a problem in June, however. The trip between Vernal and Rock Springs is scenic on either side. There is a nice KOA in Vernal right on 191. There are no noteworthy RV parks in Rock Springs IMO. Best RV park in the area IMO is the KOA in Lyman, WY, about an hour west of Rock Springs.
Skip likes the west side for scenic, but that doesn't go into Rock Springs...rather Green River which is very close. And, I really like the east side..once north of Dutch John the vistas are pretty amazing though they exclude the gorge somewhat. You can access the gorge in a couple of spots and the access roads are pretty scenic in themselves.

RE: Florence to Eugene rt OK? also chains req'd on I-5 OR?

Well, this subject comes up a lot. Fortunately I've always had enough time leeway so I could avoid inclement weather.....and I've pulled through a lot of snow country in the winter. I've never carried (or used) chains. Figuring out when "to be or not to be" on the highway is not really rocket surgery. Frankly, I wouldn't want to be pulling my TT around, chains or no, in inclement weather......and I have over 50 years of experience driving in winter conditions. Course I guess "inclement" should be defined. What is inclement to one may be just fine to another.

RE: Being "level" with slides out

My procedure is to leave the slide side slightly high with slide still in, then lower stabilizers on the slide side only. Then I extend the slide and lower the non-slide side stabs. Rig comes out pretty level. Having said all that, I have been a half bubble off on occasion and have suffered no ill effects.

RE: Utah: US-50 or US-89/UT-28 between I-70 and I-15

Don't get overly spooked. 6 is the most popular route from the Salt Lake area to Moab and the like. It is typical of a long, straight two lane lights-on highway. There are passing lanes. While the scenery on I-70 might be considered a step above 6, it is a longer route with more grades to deal with.

RE: Trailer Life Subscription

Been there, done that. It pays to keep good records and pay attention. I got my DW a subscription to Rachael Ray mag last year...twice. Once the orthodox way, second time was a donation of some sort. Don't think it was a scam, but you can pay two or three times if you don't pay attention. Now I get my own Rachael Ray mag. Use it for the outhouse now that Monkey Ward catalogs are obsolete.

RE: BAL Tongue Twister

I occasionally use the magnetic yellow alignment balls ($9.95 @ Harbor Freight), but usually use nothing but experience and judgement. In and out of the TV 2 or 3 times, but no real issues. In any case, side to side seldom an issue. Get the ball anywhere near the hitch and it will twist itself on. With BAL unit, looks like you need a nice level base. I don't always have that.

RE: Is this one way to calculate tongue weight?

All the technical stuff aside and assuming you're interested in safety and comfort of towing, get yourself a 1K/10K equalizer....it will be $ well spent.

RE: trailer with 2 doors, same keys?

Okay, so the dealer wasn't BS'ing me I guess, I'll mark them or something.
Ramble, expecting 1 key to open both doors is nothing like expecting 1 key to run 3 cars, that's a poor comparison. But I guess you have 1 key for the front door of your house, and a different one for your back door too etc, right?
When we moved into this place the prev owners had about 4 different keys, I changed all the locks, 1 key for all the doors including the back garage.
You're right, of course. Guess I don't consider it worth bothering with as in my business I carry well over 300 keys to a variety of properties and am quite used to the key selection process. Just a matter of how many keys you want to carry. Unfair of me to chide this as a problem. As to my house, I never lock it so no problem there.

RE: trailer with 2 doors, same keys?

Wow! I've had two doors/two keys for years now and didn't know it was a problem until just now. 3 cars too....wonder if I can get a key that fits all three. Not really trying to be sarcastic, but I have keys for all kinds of things involving the TT and just don't seem to notice any inconvenience...I have all the keys color coded. Hitch lock, spare tire lock, propane tank lock, the same storage compartment locks that everyone else has, etc. The only problem I've had with any locks in 10 years is DW locking herself out when I was not around. (Please don't ask how.) Savvy neighbor simply popped off a screen and DW crawled thru the window. As I said, I wasn't there. That's her story and she's sticking to it. So much for keys.

RE: Thinking of making a jump from a HTT to hardside trailer

As long as your TV is adequate for the TT, doubt you'll notice much difference in towing. We had one of the earlier HTTs (a 2001 21' Kiwi, 18' box, 21' w/tongue) and thought we might do a lot of camping, as we were graduating from tents. As it turns out, we have gradually gone to RV parks more and more (we're getting older, and the amenities become more appealing with age).
We had the HTT for four years and putting the beds together everytime we stopped finally got to us. Our current TT (26' box, 29' w/tongue....still not sure how TTs are measured) is definitely not as easy to maneuver in some campgrounds, but there are all kinds of campgrounds and many can accommodate our current TT without problems.
Most important aspect of such an upgrade (if that's what you want to call it) is to have a proper hitch so as to minimize any potential towing problems. Our current TT serves us well, though I might have chosen a different unit. The DW prevailed with her selection of a floor plan, as usual. She could care less about any other aspect of the unit. Last year I went from a 7.4 GM gasser to our present 7.3 PSD, so can tow just about anything.....towing ability not much of a factor.

RE: Road Atlas

I realize I spend way more money on maps that I should. I love paper maps (good ones)and I have either Benchmarks or DeLormes for every state I go through. I prefer Benchmark, but they only make maps for the western states (as far as I know). They are big (CO is 142 pages, WA 127 pages) but I really like and use them a lot.
Fortunately I have clients who constantly give me gift cards for REI (which I'm sure they get with dividend points) and I use them to get maps (and Garmins and.....).
Anyway, I get a lot of enjoyment just sitting down and poring over maps in my spare time. I do this with a lot of international maps on the internet as well.

RE: Sand Hollow State Park in Dec???

Should've mentioned in my reply to your PM that there are also two nice little RV parks in Leeds, maybe 15 minutes closer to CC, right off I-15. This is one, the other is next door. May not be able to get a spot, tho. Lots of snowbirds grab these up. Again, convenient to your needs and generally warmer than CC.

RE: Quail Creek State Park- Utah

Yes, nice little park, but for my money the best spot in the area is Sand Hollow State Park. Downsides are that it is still new, so no trees, etc. but the sites are all FHU, spacious, and it has yet to be crowded while we were there (winter months). Rest rooms new and nice. While is essentially an OHV park, OHVs, ATVs etc cannot be used in the site areas and must be transported to the trail section, so they do not affect the tranquility of the living areas. The views are commensurate with the area, though there are no waterside spots. We like it as a base camp. The spot we usually take has a view of much of the valley and some beautiful sunsets.
Snow Canyon is nice to take a walk, but the sites for FHU are very tight as suggested by another poster. There are many nice spots for a walk within 50 miles.

RE: How to carry extra diesel

I've never really had a concern about xtra fuel....44 gal tank 11-12 mpg....but I can see the need at some point. Wouldn't know where to carry it in my Ex, certainly not inside TV or TT. Suppose I could build an external carry rack. Been all over the western states and western Canada however, and the only problem I've run into so far was a nozzle that wouldn't fit one time way out in the boondox. After scratching my head for a few minutes, I happened to walk around the other side of the pump where I found a standard nozzle. Lucky I guess. I have had to unhook a couple of times to get to the pump, but better than running out. Guess I could carry an empty can or two around to keep from having to unhook but it has happened so seldom. On my list of inconveniences, this one is not very high.

I believe that the law requires you carry CHAINS in these areas at that time of year. Should check on this.
Yep.....if towing, carry chains.

RE: Ventura CA to Cedar City, Utah......

.....in any case, travel on I-15 is seldom problematical, especially that early in the year. We usually get one or two fair storms before Xmas, but seldom affects travel on I-15 that much. I usually pull my rig down to St. George in December where I store it for the winter and I've never had a problem.
