US Rt. 27 thru GA?

This snowbird will be traveling from south to north through GA late in March and would like to try a different route. Thinking of taking US Rt. 27, which parallels the Georgia/Alabama border the whole way. How is it? Any recommended state parks/CoE campgrounds along the way? Thanks.

RE: Need first night stay Open RV campground along RT84 CT

Exit 2 on 84 in Danbury there is a rest area that will allow overnight parking. As far as open campgrounds along that route (CT), not sure there is one.
Also, FYI: If you return home on 84 the first rest area after entering CT is very nice. Separate area for RVs, security, and pretty quiet; the next one after that, eastbound, is also very nice too.
A year-round campground in northern NJ, off I-80, is run by Morris County: Mahlon Dickerson. clicky

RE: Why does my oven take so long to light?

Light stove top burners to help get propane through lines more quickly than by oven alone.
Nelson said: "It takes time for the gas to get there. I turn the knob to pilot then give it about two minutes then I get down there and it lights right up" That's one way to handle the situation, but as a survivor of a propane explosion, the idea of doing this scares the you-know-what out of me. If you do do this, and you go back after two minutes and can smell propane, DO NOT attempt to light it until the air clears.

No more ferry service from Maine to Nova Scotia

This is all I know about it at the moment: clicky I presume this means discontinuation of service from Portland as well as Bar Harbor.
Update: I've now seen it confirmed in the press that service to/from Portland is also finished. :(

Savannah. Go through or around?

I'm soon traveling south on US 17 through SC and then GA, which I've done before but always bypassing Savannah by hopping on I-95 until south of the city, then back on 17. My question is, would it be advisable just to stay on 17, which goes right through the city, or would the interstate be the lesser of the two evils?

RE: Winter Weather

It's "only" -9F at the South Pole. That's a warm spell for them. The seasons are reversed there, of course, so summer is soon to begin!

RE: The "Big One"

It wasn't an earthquake, but Maine had a major ice storm in January 1998 that will never be forgotten by those of us who experienced it. Downed trees and power lines everywhere. DW and I had no power for 19 days (try that in mid-winter in Maine!) We had a pop-up back then, but it was encased in ice and of no use. But because we had been tent campers we had lanterns, cook stove and all the other gear, and our two wood stoves and generous wood pile kept the house warm. The biggest inconvenience was no water at the turn of a faucet or flush of the toilet, as we were on our own deep well with pump requiring electricity. Showers were taken and water jugs filled at work. A generator would have helped, particularly with saving the contents of the freezer. Compared with most of our neighbors, we were very well off and reasonably comfortable.

RE: Low Country Boil

Up here in the northern latitudes, it's called High Country Boil. Made with moose noses or lobster. Two lobster = one nose. A raven or two add a lot of flavor, but don't let PETA find out!

RE: Fort Pickens FL Road Open

Though I probably won't be getting there this winter, I do wonder about what's going on. It's nice of you to keep everyone updated. Sure has been a rough few years there.

RE: Almost Time to Leave

Hope you made it out of the driveway okay. Roads down here are cleared and traffic moving no problem, but I would watch out for black ice. I have postponed departure until Saturday (not related to the storm).

RE: Routes 195-95-287-78-81-66-95 New England to Florida

I would rather deal with black ice at night with bald tires and no headlights than take the New Jersey Parkway again.
This might be a nostalgia thing from when it used to take me to beach, but I've always liked the Parkway. And that's in spite of all the quarters for tolls I've sprinkled liberally along its length over the years.

Is a Low Country Boil the same thing as a Chicken Bog? If so, I've been to one (in NC) and loved it

RE: Oak Island, NC

I've looked and not found much. Did find one place, can't remember the name, directly across from WalMart in Southport; lot of permanents but not too bad. Will try to figure out the name for you. Of course, WallyMally may be a possibility.
Edit update: Woodside is, or was, the name. Woodside Campground I think.

RE: Almost Time to Leave

S.O....
Good thing you stayed home an extra day, otherwise you'd be headed right into this storm. It's been snowing hard the last several hours and beginning to pile up. I'm only 2 miles from I-95. Supposed to change over to freezing rain/rain later in the day. From Thursday on right through early next week looks much better down to where, if anything, it would be rain, not snow. I think they call that a "window of opportunity." Have a good trip!

RE: Almost Time to Leave

SO
Good thinking on delaying departure. Wednesday sounds like a mess here (southern Maine), 4-8 inches of snow before changing to rain/freezing rain, very windy. Not a fun RVing day.
If you get to Bangor, check out Dysarts truck stop (exit 180) plenty of place to park, great food.
Your travel route is one of the best, especially now that it sounds like I-78 has been fixed. Happy trails.....

RE: Almost Time to Leave

Have a great trip, SO... Watch the forecast carefully as there is some weather headed this way (Maine) Wednesday into Thursday. After that, with any luck, several good days. You might want to time your departure with that in mind. What route are you taking? Where are you planning to stay your first few nights? Outside of overnighting in a parking lot, your options this time of year are almost nil. I'm wrestling with these issues myself, and currently looking at leaving for FL on Friday, after the storm has passed and the roads are clear and dry.
