RE: Sequoia National Park - Dorst Creek Campground

There is an Elk's Lodge in Oakhurst (?) CA - with a campground. It might work as a home base to visit Yosemite, but keep checking for in - park cg cancellations. I believe in additon to Yosemite Pines there is a KOA near one of Yosemite's entrances.

RE: South Jersey

Timberlane, in Clarksboro is open 12months(w/full hookups), and a very serviceable, decent campground. There really aren't too many campgrounds in SJ that are open all year. There might be something in the Atlantic City area, besides Buena - maybe someone has that info for you.

RE: AC cover blew off!

I had the same issue, but with a dometic ac cover. I found replacements on ebay. Make sure you have your ac model #, because, at least w/dometic, there are different covers, don't just order "coleman".
I got the suggestion to use a larger head screw when installing the new cover - spreads the stress-

RE: I didn't give up!!

Congrats!!! Life is too short, I think you were right to sell the house - even at the much lower price - no sense in keeping your dream of fting on hold any longer.
It is a great lifestyle, and remember to slooooooooooooooow down - it took me a while to get the hang of the more relaxed pace - drive fewer miles, stay longer- awesome!!!! Maybe our paths will cross, and safe travels

RE: Iam a newly widow driving with out my husband.

I am so sorry for the loss of your husband. I admire your desire to get on the road.
I am a female solo rv'er - for the past 3 years. It can be done, and safely. I do not use rest stops often, an occasional WalMart, but mostly campgrounds. I have a garmin gps, verizon cell/internet, and a cb radio - I have Coach-Net emergency road service - make sure you have some sort of ERS- and they are equipped to handle RV's.
Start out with short trips - are you comfortable driving your RV? If not, there are RV driving schools - or get to a large, empty parking lot and practice- set out some cones and work on backing and turning. Can you hookup- set up your RV?
Get a cg directory, and maybe join something like Passport America for reduced camping fees. Now find a campground within a few hours of home, and get your feet wet.
The Escapees have a group, SOLO, for single rv'ers. You might want to check that out, along with the other great ideas in previous posts.
I wish you all the best, and plese feel free to pm me - Kathy

RE: First time to drive a 42' motorhome

Linda,
Yes, the ride is much smoother, but I moved from a 29' gas to a 38' dp - a very big leap. The 38'dp feels very stable - not like the 29' gas- that coach I had to fight to keep it straight. Wind, trucks, boy - it was a battle. The 38'dp handles much easier. It was not a difficult transition - just a bit of practice - now it is a pleasure to drive. Good luck if you get the 40' Kathy

RE: First time to drive a 42' motorhome

Can you get to a large empty parking lot? If so, get there and practice. Use a couple of cones to help practice turns and backing. You won't have the pressure of dealing with any other traffic - just you and the rig.
Here are a couple of tips folks gave me, that I have found to be useful: "hug" the center line (as long as you can see the line in your mirror-you are not over it). It takes a long time to stop!!!! Keep a following distance of at lesat 4 seconds- 6 sec better yet. I find right turns to be the trickiest, especially in towns/cities. Stay as wide as you can, and I'm not sure how to descrive this but I'll try: Don't start your RT turn until your hips have gone beyond the curb. Make any sense? Maybe someone else can describe that a bit better. Now, about backing into a site - take your time, get out and look - go slow - when in doubt -stop and get out again and look!!!! Once you have backed in, then you can adjust your positioning by pulling forward- then moving slightly to the l or r - don't try to "wiggle" while backing.
You can do it!!! Other than adjusting to the additional length, I think you will find this coach easier to drive. I went from a 29' gas to a 38' dp - wow- bigger is better (and I'm a lady :) )

RE: Can I heat my RV by using the cooktop ??????

The front of my RV is cold, also. The front windshield is the culprit. Go to a hone improvement big box store and buy a roll of reflective insulation-- cut it to fit the front windshield - makes a world of difference - blocks the cold and the summer heat!!!! I just roll it up when done - store it in an outside bay - it will improve the effectiveness of the furnace and the ac.

RE: Yosemite National Park

Mark, I have never been to Yosemite (going in May), but reservations for July 15 - Aug 15 open up at 7AM (PT) March 15. I suggest you have specific dates, sites, and cg lined up, and be online a few minutes BEFORE 7 AM - logged on to reservations - and click in precisely at 7. That's how I got a site for May. The Yosemite web site has cg info - listing length of unit that each site can hold - a good starting point for selecting a site.
If you plan to arrive prior to July 15, keep checking, maybe there will be a cancellation. I am not familiar with the area, so I can't help with cg's outside the park, other to say that when I looked online, the reviews for most were awful.
Have a great trip

Concord/Oakland CA campground suggestions?

Hi,
I will be visiting family in Concord, CA, and going to the Oakland airport.(early June) I have a 38' class a w/toad - looking to spend 4-5 days in the area. I will be coming from Yosemite, and will be heading north on I 5 once I leave the Concord/Oakland area. I don't need to be IN Concord or Oakland, maybe an hour or so out? Preferably close to I 5? Thanks for any and all suggestions, Kathy

RE: Route to Crater Lake from Redding CA area

OP Kathy here. Several posters have mentioned waterfalls. Wonderful, I love falls. Once we park rv at Diamond Lake RV (hopefully-need to make res yet)- this will be for early June, where do we go to see these waterfalls? We have a toad, any suggestions for falls viewing? Thanks again, everyone - info much appreciated, Kathy

Route to Crater Lake from Redding CA area

Hi,
We have a 38' class a dp w/toad, and are NJ flatlanders with some mountain driving experience. What route do you suggest: Redding CA to Crater Lake - actually Diamond Lake RV Park which is north of Crater Lake NP.
This will be one of many posts in the next few days/weeks as we finalize our summer travel. I will be back!!!! :) And, thanks for your help,
Kathy

RE: Alaska Ferry

Took my 38' class a w/toad in '07. We did southbound from Haines to Prince Rupert, spent 2-3 nights at each port along the way. (Juneau, Sitka, Petersburg, Wrangell, and Ketchikan. Awesome. You can use their web site to figure out the cost, it will vary - depending on your total length and the number of times you get off/on. I used their site to figure out route/price, but I spoke to a rep to make the final plan - I wanted to talk to a person to make sure our route made sense. We did not get a stateroom for any segment -not necessary - and using PR instead of Bellingham saved us thousands!! It was worth every penny - which I believe was approx $2400 for 38' + 18' rv/toad and 2 passengers and 1 pet!!!!

RE: Camping World Does it AGAIN! UPDATE 2/25

Chuck, I am so glad that this has a great chance to have the fairy tale happy ending!!! CW needs to get your coach repaired to your satisfaction. I find the fact that CW pres has stepped in and facilitated getting the job done right both good and bad. Why should a CW customer need to contact him, where are the managers?? And,just who is working in CW's service departments? Are they certified rv techs? I am not naive enough to believe that Chuck is the only customer that has had a problem with CW service. With all the manufacturers/dealers closing, there must be some very qualified techs out there looking for work. CW needs to look for qualified workers, not just warm bodies.
By the way Chuck, you will love the sat dish once all this mess gets resolved :)

RE: Independent Inspection or Not?

Yes, find an independent inspector, it's a small % of $$ compared to the cost of the rv. Do not believe the sales person, hire an independent. I'm sorry I don't know of any inspectors in the Tampa area. when I had my cummins/freightliner coach inspected, I had them do an oil sample - it was an extra $25, but worth it. My inspector discovered the water pump did not work, the owner never dry camped so he didn't realize it, replaced it right away.
This might well be your new-to-you coach, but don't get ahead of yourself - slow down and do it right. Inspect and then a thorough PDI (there are some checklists available online -google it), and make sure you know that everything works-don't take the sales person word for it - and make sure you know how to work all systems. I suggest you take along a video camera and record the walk thru. Make sticky notes and put them on systems as reminders of what they are and how to operate. If this is it, good luck, and if this one doesn't pan out there are other great rv's out there. You will find one.
