RE: Beware of Pemex 3811 a few miles south of Santa Ana

I only put gas in at self serve pumps in Canada and U.S. That's where the best price is. I'm cheap, remember Moisheh?
The only time I've been worried about getting taken in the U.S. is when my credit card won't work at a self serve pump because of the lack of a zip code for Canada. Then, I'm required to hand over my credit card to the inside attendant while I fill up. Always makes me nervous doing that, but trouble free so far!

RE: Beware of Pemex 3811 a few miles south of Santa Ana

When we are in Mexico and have to put gas in the tank, we do so only in 500 peso increments. And I make sure I am ready to get out of my RV quickly so I can see that they start at zero. I ask for 500 pesos worth, and I show them the 500 pesos note in my hand. I stand there and don't move while he/she puts in the 500 pesos worth, (solo quinientos pesos, por favor) and I pay them 510 pesos. I don't have to wait for change, and have never had a problem.
The problem with having a locking gas cap is that you are more likely to end up with a very costly hole in the bottom of your now empty gas tank. Much more expensive than simply losing some fuel by siphoning.

RE: Cost of Travel in Mexico...

It would be nice to find 3 or 4 other rigs to travel with in Mexico so boondocking would be an option there.
I guess everybody has their own comfort level, but we've boondocked all over Mexico the past two winters without problem.

RE: Cost of Travel in Mexico...

Nothing wrong with either option, but I suspect those saying it is just as expensive fall closer to the first option and those saying it's cheap fall closer to the second option.
Could I sugest filling in some data below (feel free to add catagories I've missed):
Rig type:
Fuel Price/gal (diesel & gas):
RV Insurance:
Campground Prices:
Type of campgrounds frequented:
Restaurant Prices for 2: Include restuarant type.
Breakfast:
Lunch:
Dinner
Grocery bill:
Suggest listing expensive items that you would stock up on before leaving.
We were in Mexico for 133 days last winter.
Fuel Motorhome $1350 (28 ft Class A gas, no toad)(We drove from Brownsville to Cancun, across to Puerto Escondido, and north back to Texas)
MH Propane $115
Highway Tolls $88
Overnight Parking $664 (the occasional "RV Park", but mostly 50 pesos here and there to a farmer or landowner to camp on his land or beach access area.
Admissions and Tours $243
Dining Out $208 (mostly local type places...no "American style" eateries)
Groceries $1277 (we love our own cooking!)
Booze $596
Hotels $0
Taxis and Buses $40
Insurance Medical $0
Insurance Motorhome $420
We stocked up on pure Maple Syrup, some Campbells style canned soups that aren't available in Mexico, peanut butter, and Basmati rice before crossing the border.
Total $5,001 CAN
$37.60 per day.
Yes, this differs from my previously mentioned total due to the dental work, minor motorhome repairs, and a few misc clothing purchases.

RE: Cost of Travel in Mexico...

Last winter we spent $46 CAN per day. This includes everything purchased while in Mexico. Food, gas, propane, booze (lots!), overnighting, entertainment, touristy things (not many) and even includes $550 I spent at the dentist.
It is MUCH cheaper to RV in Mexico.

Costco has them for $76.00 each. Do you have a Costco near you? They can also order them.
I don't believe those are Trojan's...or are they?

RE: Lubricating the winegard antenna question

Annually, I squirt a abundance of WD-40 on anything that looks like a hinge or friction point on our Wineguard antenna. WD-40 will it's way down into anything that moves.
DO NOT use WD-40! Only silicon spray is to be used.
Direct from the Winegard website...
You will want to lubricate the quad ring 3-4 times each year to keep it from getting brittle. To lubricate this ring just spray the gear housing on the roof with a silicone spray lubricant. DO NOT use WD-40 as it is a solvent and will eat your gears.

RE: Best price for Trojan T-105's...?

Birmingham, AL dealer has T-105's for $92 each. That is likely before any fees but I am not sure. Dealer's number is 205-320-1600. I will be getting 2 in the spring to replace my puny 12v battery that came with the camper.
That's what I wanted to hear, thanks sonicsix!
I see that dealer has several locations. I'll try and confirm your price tomorrow...

RE: Getting rid of the onboard generator

Yes, I agree this idea will affect resale value, although our current thinking has us wanting to outfit the RV for OUR use, not for a future owners use.
We will not miss the microwave, the A/C, the hair dryer or the curling iron. When we're camped out on a remote beach in Mexico, we do not care for those items. Our electricity usage is mostly lights and laptop.
Although, I do understand the "emergency" or "lifesaver" issue of having a generator. Perhaps that problem would be solved by bringing along a small portable genset and battery charger unit.
I'm thinking I could probably get $800 or so for the generator (or more?...not sure) and will probably spend $600 on another 80W solar panel and maybe $400 on batteries. So the money part of that equation is not really an issue.

Getting rid of the onboard generator

We are considering removing and selling our 5kw Kohler built in generator. We simply don't use it enough and find ourselves having to start it once a month or so just for the sake of running it. Can't stand generator noise, and won't miss not having it.
We do a lot of dry camping and I'm thinking I will just use that compartment for a better battery setup, and maybe I'll add another solar panel or two.
Anybody done this?
