RE: Towing with Tacoma - Bad Idea?

Do a search for some of my posts. I've been towing a 26' TT for 5 years now that weighs about 5000# wet (4300# dry). After 5 years though the kids are getting bigger (oldest is 7) and the desire to take some cross state trips is growing. Looking for a bigger truck since towing with the Tacoma is a good experience it's not something to do cross country. Gas tank for one is way to small and you'll get about 10mpg on the flats. Anything over about 4000 foot elevation and you'll struggle a bit as well. My combination works great for the "weekend warrior" type trips where you're only traveling a few hours away but if you camp more frequently or have longer distances to travel then get a bigger truck or smaller trailer.

RE: no Toyo OPEN COUNTRY A/T for at least 60 days

Nitto's for sure unless you can wait for the Toyo's. BFG's wear out too fast. I had BFG Rugged Trails on my truck and they lasted only 40,000 miles. My Toyo Open Country A/T's were warrented for 50,000 miles and I just replaced them with another set on Monday after 65,000 and they still had life in them. Nitto's might give you a little more road noise than you're used to especially since the Toyo's are really quiet.

RE: 2 pictures Bay Area camping

Looks like one of the Big Basin loop trails. Very nice this time of year.

Try these links: DMV Registration Calculator California Unladen Weight Fees *Note: all pickup trucks are registered as commercial vehicles in California and subject to the fees listed here.

RE: Links to overweight RV crashes, please, esp BC.

Don't know about overweight however throughout these forums people always ask "how would anyone know".. blah blah blah.. and the answer is usually... "when an accident happens and...." Here's a good example where several tickets could have been avoided if the driver was pulling legally. Although the accident was clearly driver error he was cited for several violations that surely will come up when the other drivers insurance companies file claims. Who knows .. if this had happen here in California I'm sure at least one of the drivers would file a civil lawsuit as well. :E The last paragraph of the story sums it up. Serious Horse Trailer Crash Found this link as well regarding penalties for overweight vehicle combination for Connecticut. Other states may have similar items on the books. Although this specifically talks about "big rigs" since many states reaquire registering larger "consumer" trucks as commercial I'm sure the law still applies. RE: Electric brakes don't work for first 10min?

I would bet that if you removed the breakaway battery you would get the exact same reaction. Here's a test though.. you said 10 minutes. So plug the trailer in and sit in your TV (without moving) and use the brakes from time to time. If the problem happens about 10 minutes into the test and is repeatable then you have maybe as suggested some issue that goes away when things heat up. My guess is though that it's more related to a short somewhere as well.. especially since you said the Prodigy LED goes out when you hit the brakes. That means it's loosing power somewhere.

RE: Sanitizing Fresh Water Tank

You may not need to do it for it's first use (although I would) you should put sanitizing on your list of things to do as a normal "maintenance" item on your fresh water tank unless you're fulltiming and always running new water in and out of the tank and water lines. I'm curently a seasonal camper myself and I do the full treatment before the first trip of each season then I drain and blow air through the lines at the end of the season (no need to winterize here). Even then there's some water left that can "sour" and therefore the sanitization at the beginning of the next season.

RE: Turn furnace off.....

I had the same problem. There is no real on/off switch on many thermostats. Someone here though mentioned pushing the temp lever a bit more to the cold side until I heard/felt a click. Waalaa.. furnace doesn't turn on anymore when I don't want it to :)

RE: They did it!

Here is an unrealistic towing capacity, A friend of mine was just sent a new sticker for an adjusted towing rating to 10,000lbs. There is no way I would put 10k behind a V-6 Toyota. Japanese automakers were always to proud to admit they have junk. I would rather drive a vehicle that if there is a problem the US automaker has the integrity to come forward and admit a problem. Keep your money in this country and buy American! Pay someone outside of the country and you get what you deserve. You sir and the rest of the people on this forum should read Popular Mechanics Most Notorious Recalls and be carefull at who throws the stones. I seem to remember Ford having some huge issues back in the early 90's that were never solved and only resulted in lawsuit after lawsuit.

RE: califoria towing behind 5vr

I have towed a flat bed behind my fiver many times and have never been bothered.....I do have brakes on the second trailer and the correct license......One of the above posts states that the second trailer must be a boat?.....Please point out the vehicle code number that states that?.....as I have never been able to find it in the vehicle code?......:h I think he is confused with a California Vehicle Code that changed several years ago. It used to say that you could tow two trailers with a class C license, and did not need endorsements, if the first was a fifth-wheel and the second was a boat. Now you need a doubles endorsement, just like other two-trailer combinations. I believe this is the correct answer. It was in fact a few years ago that the second trailer needed to be a boat HOWEVER in going through the California Vehicle code the only reference to double towing now is only found in the commerical drivers vehicle code and you do in fact need a doubles endorcement and a different class of CDL. You can not get a doubles endorcement with a Class C. As well the 65' limits are not hard and fast and can depend on what a particular county has set. It can be 60' in some cases and also can depend on the width of what is being towed as well as what may be "sticking out". In some cases 75' is allowable under certain restrictions and permits.

RE: califoria towing behind 5vr

Read the law again. The second trailer must be a boat. Towing a cargo trailer, vehicle or other type of trailer would not be legal in CA behind a 5er. Also all trailers over 1500# must have brakes. There are no regular checkpoints or inspections in CA however you can be pulled over if suspect and then checked. As well if you're in an accident and found to not have the proper equipment you won't like the results.

RE: Campground reservation size question

Most places want you to be able to fit the entire trailer in the site so that it doesn't stick out into the roadway. Use the ball to bumper measurements to get the correct site size.

RE: New spin on TT weights...

I finally got him to tell me the GVWR of the TT, but he added "the GVWR is an overbuilt figure http://i50.tinypic.com/kapiep.jpg, you will never load close to it". Now that was original! All depends on the trailer and the camper I suppose. My TT has a CCC of 2200#. There aren't even enough cabinets or storage compartments to load up 2200# worth of stuff. Maybe rocks if I were a collector :) Not to defend a saleman though... but I had to "order" my trailer and the GVWR in the brochure was listed at 6000# however when I picked it up I noticed the stamp on the frame said GVWR was 7000#. Technician (not the sales guy) said he noticed the same thing as he had some of the same model come in with GVWR of 6000# with slightly different frames. Guess I just got lucky :B

RE: Monterey Bay KOA

Stayed there once over the "free night" mothers day weekends. (I wrote one of the reviews on "rvparkreviews.com". It's expensive and disappointing because all the "extras" there cost way more than they should... and probably should be included with the price of a site. The only thing that place has going for it was that the pool was warm and the playground was huge which were both free. Other than that it's not worth the high price despite the stuff they have for the kids. You can drive a bit to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and spend less and get way more in terms of kids activities.

RE: Garmin MapSource linked to Google StreetView ??

If you have the newer Mapsource appliations there's an option that can be clicked that says "View In Google Earth". Thanks you, it works!!:B If you're using it like I do I will map gas stations then do a street view to see if it's possible to get in/out of them easily and possibly plan your "attack". I've found it really helpfull since I travel to some small towns in the Sierra foothills where gas stations can sometimes only hold a couple cars. :)

RE: Garmin MapSource linked to Google StreetView ??

If you have the newer Mapsource appliations there's an option that can be clicked that says "View In Google Earth". Also if you have the Garmin plugin from the Garmin web site, many of the units they have will accept information FROM Google Maps. There is an option in Google Maps that says SEND TO GPS which will prompt you for the manufacture and provide a link to the Garmin plugin download. Not all the Garmin units are supported but most are.

RE: Toyota/ CTS Now Has A Fix

The company I work for has outsourced more and more production work every year. It has cost so much money over the years in quality issues and delays as a result of those issues that it makes me ill. In many cases, the parts were built to spec too, but failures in QC and overall communication of those requirements created unforeseen production issues. Ultimately it is Toyota's problem because they chose to outsource it and bought off on the part in the first place. It is just tragic when lives are lost because of it. Toyota isn't the only one either. Toyota didn't outsource that work to do Elkhart any favors, they could have built that in-house stateside. They did it to save money, just like any company that outsources their production. Problem with this scenario is that the company in question also makes these parts for Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi albeit with their own design and specifications. This would tell me it is the design given CTS by Toyota, not CTS's QC that is the problem, or we would see similar problems with the other manufactures. I only 1/2 believe that the problem is Toyota's and not also CTS's problem. CTS I'm sure had big input into the design to facilitate "cheap" and efficient manufacturing process. Ford's pedal is based on basically the same design from what I'm reading. They (Ford) just reciently went with CTS for production of the gas pedal and has concerns of their own. If this was 100% Toyota's design then no other company should be worried about their's. My guess is that since CTS does tons of different parts they pulled up some type of "template" and then let Toyota make some modifications to fit their vehicles (to their specifications) but the mechanics and the parts used in the manufacturing are most likely CTS influenced.

RE: Workhorse/Toyota Suffer from the Same Condition

It's funny being the local radio station this morning stated that Ford is stopping it's full size truck sales overseas because it uses the same supplier for the gas pedals as Toyota does. Unfortunately Toyota gets a black eye for something their supplier may in fact have known about and never corrected. either you heard wrong or the station has its facts very wrong BAD INFO--IGNORE!! It was the diesel van.. not truck but the information is still correct. http://in.news.yahoo.com/137/20100128/371/tbs-ford-halts-production-of-china-van-w.html

Too bad Toyota has to get a black eye for CTS's problem. Ford just signed on for the same basic thing and has to stop production as well. http://in.news.yahoo.com/137/20100128/371/tbs-ford-halts-production-of-china-van-w.html
