I think you are on the right track. Check my sig!!! Find a 2500 or 3500, either/or IMO. You will love either. Even if you don't need a 3500 and find one you like, there is so little difference in the two you would be nuts not to consider it....

No doubt the trailer brakes should be able to handle the trailer and put no additional strain on the truck. And if you live on flatland, you'll never have to test the scenario. If you drive in British Columbia, your trailer brakes will be tested, and may even heat up to the point of smoking. That happened to us in Sept 2009. And when it did, and we still had several kilometers of 15% grade downhill to go, I was thankful we had only 7,000 pounds behind us pushing the poor old F-250 PSD 4x4, and was also grateful the truck had all disc brakes. Truck's brakes were also too hot when we reached bottom. Trailer brakes were badly scorched and scored and need replacing before we take off north again. Also keep in mind if your trailer has tire failure, and maybe all tires on one side blow out ... will your truck be man-enough to handle the trailer? Took this picture while stopped at the brake check area waiting for the brakes to cool down and stop smoking before proceeding again. http://suethomas.ca/images/BC/20090917_LLH-NairnPP_486.jpg width=640 I talked to a guy in Colorado that lost his trailer brakes on ONLY 8%. After the trailer brakes went, the trucks brakes were very, very soon to follow. The guy told me that he was white knuckled until he finally got the truck and FW stopped. Remember, it was ONLY 8%, not the picture you have of 15%. The bill to fix the damage was $3500. It was a DRW 3500. Was his truck man enough? Moral of the story; no 2500 or 3500 has the stopping power alone on 8%, much less 15% without the help of trailer brakes.

I would say closer to 12,500# for a newer 2500 diesel as long as pin wt stays below 2500lbs. And I suppose that is fact:h It is all opinion but if you want to answer the question of how much trailer should the poster be looking for, the best answer is 10,000lb for that truck. Something with less than 2000lbs of pin weight loaded. Not the 2500lb pin weight you recommend. Your opinion may differ but since you do not have any actual weights for the truck, passengers, cargo, nor do you know the gear ratio, or any other information besides your personal guesses, I guess my opinon is just as valid as yours. BTW FYI the max cargo capacity for a 08 chevy diesel is 2593lbs so if the pin weight was 2500lb you could not carry people, or fuel, or anything else over 93 lbs. Of course that is the opinon of Chevy. No use in arguing, for sho!!! I am just throwing it out there, your numbers, albeit safe, are low. Use your truck for what it was meant!!! Pulling, baby, pulling!!! Your "Superman" 3500s are the same truck as a 2500. You don't get a free cape with every purchase. You can "under-use" your truck, if you want. OR...you can do the research and tow what your truck can handle.... aAd at the end of the day when the research is done, a 2500 can handle about 2500# of pin and a 12,000# trailer. Those that know what effect a FW has in conjunction with GVWR know that 2500# is about the max. FWIW. At the end of the day....it is what we are all comfy with! Not what some dude in NM or NE says.....

I don't know why GVWR was brought up; it really has zero to do with stopping. A 3500 DRW has the same stopping power as a 2500 SRW. If we are talking 1500 vs 3500, it is a valid argument. Because a lot of people argue that the braking system on a truck is designed to stop its GVWR and the weight its carrying when towing is near the GVWR. If an F350 dually has the same brakes and frame as an F250 SRW truck then what exactly does buying an F350 dually get one ? Heavier rear axle and springs ? You got it! Axle is the same, actually.

The short answer is 10,000lb 5th Wheel. You can carry more and pull more but for you and the truck to be comfortable, limit the 5er to 10,000lbs loaded weight. That will allow you plenty of power up hills, no strain on windy days, and keep you from working at the edge of the trucks capabilities. This is opinion, 10K is a cake walk for any diesel. I would say closer to 12,500# for a newer 2500 diesel as long as pin wt stays below 2500lbs.

I don't think most of us realize just how much the "feeble" brakes on the trailer are really doing for stopping the combo. Even if the trailer brakes are set low enough to only provide 30% stopping on the trailer, it is doing a lot. Keeping the load straight, dragging behind you is key in a panic stop to avoid jack knifing. Sure they are drums and electric and are prone to failure. That is why they need to be adjusted correctly and inspected regularly. Your truck is in a very bad position if it indeed needs to stop the load all by itself. Davelinde: have you indeed tried to stop the combo, truck only? The one time I had not noticed the trailer connector was loose, it pushed me through an intersection. I don't know why GVWR was brought up; it really has zero to do with stopping. A 3500 DRW has the same stopping power as a 2500 SRW. If we are talking 1500 vs 3500, it is a valid argument.

We don't buy from the boys that brought us Pearl Harbor. I love my Tundra and drive it with pride. I have an 07 with 52K miles and still smile when I get in. My Ford spit a spark plug with 60K miles on it. My Dodge had a lope that couldn't be cured. My Chevy had antifreeze that has been eating the motor from the inside. I support ME when I buy a product that holds value. And U.S.A has a Marine that supports Japan. What's the big deal?

You will go directly to jail, your remaining living family will be auctioned off to the highest bidder to pay off the 30 year loans you took out on the truck and trailer. Unless, of course your truck is a diesel, someone is riding in your 5er, pulling out of a walmart where you camped for 2 weeks or you have Chinese tires. Finally, a voice of sensibility!:C

Has anyone hauled a big ( 38 foot ) fiver from Durango to Ouray via Cortez and Ridgeway? Gerald 34 footer without an issue. It is an easy drive. I do it every year. Even passed a semi a time or two!

A lot of people are stuck with the short bed trucks they bought because they wanted to park in the garage or wanted a cute truck, 5th wheel towing was the last priority for them. If you want to get into 5th wheel RVing, do it right. I forgot to add that my long bed truck is also used as a daily driver and I have never had a problem with driving around in town, residential areas, or parking in parking spaces. I do not park in the garage which is not a problem. There is no credibility in this article. If anyone has any fact about this, I would love to see it. The length of the bed has no bearing on how much you can tow. Am I missing something here? And where is the literature backing up what "rvguru" is saying in this article? GM's note only says this about 1500 and NON HD 2500 models. The 5'7" bed isn't even an option on the 2500HD. The thought process "I tow with an 8' bed, so it has to be better" is not logical. There must be fact behind the statement. Using your logic, I shouldn't park vehicles in my garage either.

If the 5th wheel you're planning on towing requires the most power available then you have absolutely NO business even considering a 3/4 ton truck. The PIN weight will put it WELL over the GVWR. Couple of things that I hope are obvious; 1) Grain of salt should be considered when taking advice from people. 2) The aforementioned statement is inaccurate; I have been towing within my limits using a 2500 for 15 months and 10,000 miles. A 3/4 ton truck has no business pulling a very large 5ver.. The GVWR on most 3/4 tons is 9000 with some newer at 10100.. After taking the weight of the truck in consideration with everything in it that would leave 1000 to 2100 lbs... This is not enough capacity for for larger 5vers.. We all want to be safe don't we?.. So, without even knowing the weights, the 2500 is a doomed TV for this guy. See #1. And for your comment, See #2. For Skip - you think there is a power difference in a 2500 to 3500 to 4500? I don't think so. Gearing is different, not power, tranny, tires, brakes, frame.......seats, steering wheel.....I could go on and on..... For dfb - weakest link on all the trucks is tires. Therefore, if you are pulling in the 16K range with pin wts over 3000lbs, a dually is a must. Otherwise, SRW 3500s are the same, same, same as the 2500s. There are actually 2 more springs on the 3500. As I am an air traffic controller, don't take my word. Drive down to the dealer and ask them. Look at the trucks side by side....you will see. And yes, I am safe; are you?

6-8 mi over the limit until I hit 73 mph. Only 3-5 over in towns. This is how I roll....73 tops!

Both beds tow a fiver, no problem. You need to figure out what you want out of the truck while NOT towing. It is a no brainer, if used only for towing a FW, a long bed dually is the best choice out there, no matter what the weight. HOWEVER, like me, I have different needs away from towing my FW, and it is those needs that drove my decision to get a 2500 short bed.

From Montrose! With your 5.9 engine and heavy trailer you will really struggle going over the Million Dollar from Durango! From Texas? That seems way out of the way. And coming from Montrose he will have to go over Monarch pass, which is very steep as well. From the south, Dolores to Telluride to Ouray is the way.

Where will you be coming from? Texas? New Mexico? Kansas? Or will you be North in Colorado? I assuming that you are coming from Texas, if that is the case, we visit my Mom in Santa Fe and use 84 to Chama, then on to Pagosa Springs. Go west to Cortez, stay in Dolores (McPhee SP) if you can, pretty, pretty. Then go to Telluride and around to Ouray. I wouldn't purposly go on 550 unless there is no alternative. It is very narrow in spots, winding and steep. 550 is very passable, it will be slow. I have not done 550 towing our FW, but I would if I had to.

..I believe there are just as many that own them just because of the 'manly image' it portrays, .... Its as if some think their manhood is defined by what they drive. They "think" it portrays a manly image. I see just as many women driving them too. Some even have to put down what other men drive to make their own vehicle "more manly"..;) (or the sissie Honda Ridgeline). Drive what you want to drive. I don't justify what I drive to anyone. Why do so many members here think they have to justify what they drive (or put down what others choose to drive)? Not putting down, just stating the facts ma'am. You call my truck a "sissie" truck and I would laugh it off because I don't care and we all know it, well, isn't. You can call me a sissie.....my truck and my van. Don't care. Not getting my undies in a wad. Oh, by the way, my van has the same towing rating as a Ridgeline. Let me guess.......you drive a Ridgeline? Got your feelings hurt? Posted? Nugget of truth, maybe????? Lighten up Francis.
