RE: Thank You, Veterans

My Dad passed away in April...he was a WWII Vet...survived Bataan and was a POW in Japan for most of the war. It meant a lot to him when people thanked him. So to honor him....and all the Vets... Thank you for being the wonderful, brave people you are. You are the real heroes. cts

RE: Home Remedies -- Please post yours!

According to the Foxfire books, if a person had a tapeworm all you had to do was to starve your self for several days and then get a bowl of warm milk, hold it close to your nose, and progressively move it away from your body.
According to the book the tapeworm would follow the aroma of the warm milk, when it started to crawl out of your body, all you had to do was to grab it and pull it the rest of the way out, then dispose of it.
I do not know if this remedy works, but it was printed in the Foxfire book series. The book said that it works.
EEEWWWW! That's just gross!

House finally under contract!

We just accepted a contract on our home. While it' much lower than we paid for it...especially after closing expenses...it is a clean contract and a quick Dec 7 close. The couple is retired military so they'll fit in real well.
We've been on the market since Feb 09 so it's been a long haul. We are glad to be almost done. Not sure what the next phase in life is...but now we have more options. DH took a promising job in Orlando last Feb and the prospects still look good. At 65 he feels fortunate to have it. We'll start refluffing our nest egg and perhaps get to retire (again!). In the meantime...we'll travel when we can.
Anyway...for those who are still waiting on a sale....HANG IN THERE!!! It will happen! cts:)

RE: Home Remedies -- Please post yours!

when we had a cold, sore throat, etc...growing up in the hills of Missouri, many moons ago, we took a teaspoon of coal oil and sugar...worked every time
My folks used to dose us with white kerosene and honey... it is a wonder we're alive.
Just a spoonfull of honey is great for cough, sore throat etc. Works great. I sometimes use hot tea with a LOT of honey for a nice soothing drink. A little rum is nice too LOL!
Salt water (sea salt, no iodine) is a good ingredient for sore throats, nasal washes, etc.
Mint Listerine works well as a pain killer and healer of canker sores.
Also... I discovered that Mint Listerine ( I use the WMT Equate brand) makes a great TOILET BOWL swish!!! Cleans, disinfects and oh so minty fresh!!! :B

RE: Very Upset

I would be upset too - and I think I would fight it to the point they would have to go to collections to get anything from me.
I really don't like that smiley face company at all - I'm sure if they just stopped sending out dump truck loads of junk mail to my house they wouldn't have to charge you that kind of malicious fee - and I'm NOT even a customer. The only sin I ever did was buy an RV and Sam's Halo has never left me alone since.
Oh noooooo!:E Do not go into collections! That just dings your credit rating and doesn't hurt anyone but you! If there's nothing in the small print that says they can charge a cancellation fee then take it up with your state AG. Each state has rules about what they allow. cts

RE: Just Curiuos..... Carbon Footprint.. House vs RV ?

"The air is much cleaner now than it was in the 1800s."
It's much cleaner now than in the early fifties. We lived miles from the nearest railroad, but the curtains would be black in a week - packing houses stunk, refineries stunk...
"I'd really like to smack the driver of the Prius Hybrid who threw trash out the window the other day!"
I'd like to smack the ones that weave down the middle of the road, concentrating on the middle-of-the-dash mileage meter, rather than watching where they're going.
We once had a young woman come to our site in Madison CG, Yellowstone, and demand that we turn off our truck. We had just pulled in - jack work and slides were still to be done. No hookups there, so I explained that we needed to conserve the batteries, and would turn off the truck when appropriate. She started a furious green rant about obscene fuel usage, most of which I couldn't understand because she was mostly speaking French. Yup, a French group in one of those monstrous European truck-based RV's that literally requires an 8-step ladder to get into it. Sorry teachable moment fans, I ranted back. How much fuel was used getting that gargantuan rig to the US? How much fuel did IT use in a day's travel? But most of all - get the heck out of my site and leave me alone. The longer you stand here raving, the longer the truck will idle.
Sluggo
Wow, Sluggo...that must have been a PItA. I believe your encounter falls in the category of obnoxious AH's. As an ironic joke you could have told her that the more she ranted at you the more carbon dioxide she was putting out! By chewing you out she was actually polluting the air!LOL:B Your example does illustrate perfectly what I was referring to earlier. People who have been "greenwashed" thinking that if they don't use papertowels(:E) they have saved the planet and it's just fine to ship a vehicle across the sea and back. It's a glaring hypocrisy they either don't see or feel entitled to do. I have friends who display attitudes of smug moral superiority because of the few things they do to be green...yet have no problem whatsoever dumping various assortments of chemicals down the drain that end up in the aquifers.
From some of the previous accounts it does initially appear that using RV's does use less energy and materials than a stix and brix. A variable that may change that equation though... stick built homes do last longer than most RV's. So the immediate larger outlay of materials of the house might, over time, trump the smaller carbon print of the RV. Not sure whether physical longevity would adversely affect energy consumption though.
The real bottom line though...is your life better as an RV'r? Are you healthier, happier and a nicer person to be around? And do you leave your camp site better than you found it? If so...you're leaving a different kind of footprint...smiles and laughter!:)

RE: Just Curiuos..... Carbon Footprint.. House vs RV ?

I usually have one of three answers depending on how jokingly they said it...
"Yes, but does your car sleep 6?"
"Right, but the car I'm towing uses nothing, so that cancels it out."
"Ain't she a beauty? Think how many American workers have jobs because of us."
:) ;)
Right on! Envy is an ugly thing, but self righteous a**holes are not worth responding to.
If they're really ugly and obnoxious AH's, I agree. Sometimes you get a "teachable moment" though and that's an opportunity to show someone that having an RV, truck or SUV doesn't make you a terrible person out to destroy nature. You do have to be watchful though. There are those that think vandalism is an appropriate method of getting their point across. cts

RE: Another reason why I'd rather RV....

Oh - I hope I'm not being paranoid....LOL!! Actually - I simply hate to fly. Period. Hate the hassle/crowds/motion sickness meds I need to take. My hip sets off the metal detectors so I get sent to the "grope box". The smell of jet exhaust makes me nauseous. I hate being crammed into a seat for hours. I hate not being able to take along extra "stuff".
Any excuse I can find to NOT fly will work ;-)
Doesn't sound like you need any excuses!!! If your hip sets off the alarms I think you can get a medical certificate for flying purposes. Might help avoid the grope box. Although...now you might get the "I can see everything you've got" box! I used to like flying. Now...I only do it when it will save me a lot of time (and $$), non stops only. I'd rather drive to avoid the crowds and people though. cts

Maybe you'd be interested in reading Saving the Earth at 8 MPG.
Thanks for the link! It's a great read and it sounds like he's having fun figuring out new ways to do stuff. I read someplace where another couple painted jugs and buckets black and used passive solar to make hot water on camping trips. I think they were tent campers. RE: Just Curiuos..... Carbon Footprint.. House vs RV ?

Actually, we have more forest land now than we had in 1920. The air is much cleaner now than it was in the 1800s. As far as polution goes, we no longer dump raw sewage into rivers, we no longer have tons of horse dung covering our streets, recycling has taken millions of tons of our throw aways and tuned it back into useful products. I'd say we doing a good job.
It's true we have cleaned up a bit. However...we can and should do a better job. I get verbally beat up by both sides. When I bring up the obvious climate cyles...(THREE ice ages??) and the fact that some people stand to make billions off the Green movement just by legislating cap and trade for carbon units...I get slammed for "hating the planet". :R But...when I refuse to use tons of pesticideds, herbicides and fertilizers on my yard (OMG! White clover in the lawn!!!:E) I get grief because my lawn isn't perfect.
Seriously...we need both sides to get to a point where we are doing what needs to be done. I really think it's a matter of unbiased education and not brainwashing. Rudeness is never a good way to educate anyone. The fellow on the bike showed his arrogant ignorance when he called a poster "m...f...". However...I'd really like to smack the driver of the Prius Hybrid who threw trash out the window the other day! You can drive to (and through) just about any state in the union and you will see examples of continued environmental trashing (illegal dumping, industrial stacks billowing black clouds, excessive use of ag chemicals...).
I have friends who are viciously "green"...who think nothing of poisoning every thing that crawls or killing everything in the lawn that isn't fescue. Or using harsh chemicals to clean. And then wonder why they can't breathe well.
There's a place in Missouri that was recently briefly in the news for mysterious clusters of brain tumors. The news media jawboned it to death and the authorities vowed to "study" it. That went on for a long time...then Erin Brockovich shows up and finds the problem in 3 days. It was a type of agricultural chemcial that was being used. You would have thought that would have made some people sit up and think. But... the story just seemed to disappear.
I lived in an area for five years that had a cluster of very rare and unusual cancers popping up. About 11 people within one mile of me had these cancers. I asked many people in the local government about it and just got brushed off. This is an agricultural area and the people involved either were directly involved in farming or lived on land that had once been farmed heavily. We left. In time I hope.
In Florida...there was an area a few years ago that had raw effluent from a paper mill still being dumped into the Gulf. A huge dead zone had been created...but the State wanted to do a "study" to determine if the toxins from the waste was really the cause. :S
There are so many examples of real environmental issues that go un noticed and unreported it's amazing. What gets the press and debate is the global warming/carbon foot print stuff. Sometimes...I think that's just a lot of smoke and mirrors to keep our attention focussed away from the real problems. If Joe Public can be persuaded to be "green" and buy a hybrid...and the mean old SUV/RV'rs get mocked... then maybe no one will notice the real threats. A developer gets the go ahead to build a subdivision next to a superfund toxic clean up sight (one in FL!). An "agribusiness" gets to build another huge poultry confinement upstream from a pristine spring and state park (Missouri). A water management district tells residents they MUST conserve water and they get to water ONE day a week...response to a drought. Yet... the district didn't deny an outside corporation a permit to pump over 400,000 gallons a day from the aquifer to sell bottled water! (Again Florida). The little town that dared to fight back is now being threatened with a lawsuit to recompense the big corporation for their legal fees. That sets a very dangerous precedent if it happens. That means small towns won't dare try to fight because if they lose...the large corporation can bankrupt them. However...in the face of this...the little town is talking about appealing. Talk about David and Goliath.
Anyway...sorry about the long post...I am very passionate about keeping a clean healthy environment and I think we need reasoned discussions...not attacks on people who have large vehicles. My truck gets better mileage than some of the new "green" cars!!!

RE: CPAP masks

On reconsideration, unless that mouth piece easily unsnaps to clean/soak it, that seems to me to be sort of a PIA.
Is there some way to buy a mask off the internet and send the bill for reimbursement to medicare?
bumpy
That was one of my concerns too. Have to ask I guess. You know how "marketing" is.... the reality is often different. I believe you can submit claims to medicare for reimbursement...but don't hold me to that. Best to call them and ask. However...reimbursement could take a looooonnnnnngggggggg time!:R
I told DH last night he just needed to amass a "collection" of different masks and rotate them. Seems one will be comfortable for awhile and then it won't. It starts out comfortable...lasts maybe 3 - 4 hours...and then it starts bothering him. He takes it off... tosses and turns (drives me nuts for awhile) and then he puts it back on again.
I reminded him that he did try nasal pillows a long time back and that it caused sores in his nose and his lip. He'd forgotten about it. But..maybe they've improved since then.
People who get it right quick are really lucky. I really feel for DH when this makes him miserable. Sigh.:( That's why I'm asking all the questions. cts

RE: CPAP masks

I just talked to a person at CPAPPro, they don't make a mouth piece that would work with upper denture out. they supply an extra set of nose pieces, but not the mouth piece. they say mouthpiece should be replaced every few months.
bumpy
Sounds like DH would leave in dentures as usual...but having to get a new mouthpiece every few months sounds like a bit of pain in the neck. I don't think DH knew about that. I'll have all kinds of info to tell him when he gets home.
so you've used the comfort gel? It didn't hurt you anywhere? How are your experiments going?

RE: CPAP masks

Just looked at Direct supply website. Will have to show that to DH when he gets home. His poor nose is sore between the eyes. The upper part of the mask just seems to press a little more there for some reason. He's tried all kinds of adjustments. Even tried using bandaids once. The glue just made things worse.
The new gel type masks look interesting. It looks like they would just conform to your face pretty nicely and without pressure points. Anyone using the "comfort gel" types??

RE: CPAP masks

Hadn't thought of using baby shampoo, but I bet that would be better than vinegar on the delicate plastics. And it would be good at removing body oils. I'm going to have DH give his gear a baby shampoo wash and see what happens next.
I'm also going to check out the various websites and look at what y'all are using. We have been buying direct and paying out of pocket also. It seems that the local medical suppliers want you to go to the doctor and get a new prescription. Last time we did that... spent $75 to see the doctor just to get him to scribble on a piece of paper. They tried to get DH to agree to a whole new sleep study, etc. He declined. All he wanted was to be able to replace the hose and masks as needed. ResMed is who we go through currently and they're cheaper than insurance charges. When DH had to replace his cpap we were able to use the original prescription. Local medical suppliers wouldn't do that.
Has anyone figured out why it's necessary to replace the masks every six months? What happens to them?:h

RE: Social Security at 62?

DH took early SS at 62 and unfortunately the market did it's tap dance on our investments shortly there after. So after one year he went back to work. He'll turn 65 in Dec...still working, but would rather be retired. Right now, we're trying to get our house sold. At that point we will be debt free...although renting an apartment. Then we'll think about what the next move is.
We thought we had everything planned for...but stuff happens. The only thing we have is SS and our savings/investments. No pensions. We haven't given up on "the dream"...just rerouting the trip a bit.
Good luck!cts

RE: Cleaning cigarette smoke?

Talk to a company that specializes in cleanup and deodorization after a fire. They would have the best stuff to remove smoke smells and clean up residue. That's what they get paid to do.
I tried borax on a mattress once to get rid of smoker smell... only worked temporarily. Even put a total zippered mattress cover on it.. the smell leached through the plastic. So...I'd ditch the carpet, mattress, curtains...anything fabric because it's very difficult to get that smell out permanently. Anything that's not permeable you could probably clean very well and not have a problem.
I personally couldn't buy an RV or a s&b home that had been smoked in. My nose is just too darned sensitive...and I find it very difficult to breath. Good luck! cts
