RE: Best adhesive when workign with foam?

You used the wrong model Liquid Nails. They make a style that is compatible with the foam materials.

RE: RATS

Don't count on the rat or mouse leaving the house after eating the poison. I have remodeled a couple of houses where the people used poison. They did not leave "looking for water" instead they died inside the walls.

RE: Can you insure a DIY camper as a camper?

If you insure it just as a van then all they will pay in the event of a total loss is the value of a van. But you can also add the value of the "optional equipment" that you have added. They will charge you extra since the value of a potential loss to the insurance company is higher. This is also done with off road vehicles since the added equipment can be of significant value. Examples would be a winch and special bumpers. But you may be better with seeing if they will insure it as a RV rather than just on a vehicle policy form. There may be better coverages under a RV policy

RE: How to spell korrectly

I agree that there are spelling and word usage errors. But what I find more of a problem are people who will not use the shift key for capital letters or use paragraphs. It seems that the more computer literate people are often the ones who don't use capital letters. They start sentences with small case letters. And type names of people and companies all in small case letters. I guess it is not cool to be a computer expert and be bothered with using the shift key. The other thing is not using paragraphs. Run-on sentences are bad enough but it is when people type and type and keep going on and on for 30, 40, 50 lines without any visual break. Sometimes they will post a full page of text without any break. When people talk the same way, just keep talking on and on, they are often ignored. One thing that would help in a lot of the problems is just proofread what you typed before you post it. An if you post something and then see you made an error it is not hard to use the edit function.

RE: Talk About the Size of this On-Board Genset…Wow!!!

It looks like that diesel has the high performance custom exhaust. Those 4 90 degrees elbows will probably start appearing on the after market exhaust systems for diesel pickups.

RE: I finally weighed it

If I remember correctly the GCWR for that chassis is 26,000 lbs. So that would make you over 2,000 lbs over the GCWR.

RE: re insulate the hot water heater

The references to styrofoam are incorrect. Styrofoam is extruded polystyrene and you cannot mix it yourself. And most likely any original insulation if it a sheet style insulation was expanded polystyrene - bed board. The misuse of the word styrofoam is very common. It is not a generic term but Styrofoam is a brand of extruded polystyrene produced by the Dow Chemical company.

For all of the time and money you have invested in your setup $25 seems like an inexpensive protection.

RE: Double Decker Motorhomes?

I wouldn't think that it would be too difficult to design an "expansion" portion of a coach that went up instead of out like a slide out. They have pop up trailers so a pop up motor home is possible if a manufacturer thinks there will be a large enough market to cover the development costs. A full two story motor home is somewhat limited. One pictured has a height of 13'6". That is getting pretty high for some locations, tunnels, and overpasses. It has been done on a motorhome. There have been pictures of a European expedition type motorhome that has this feature.

RE: Is there a custom trailer builder in So Cal? How to find?

greenrvgreen What do you mean by "poly board"? There are several types of insulation board that have poly in their name. They have some different characteristics and different R-Values. Expanded polystyrene - bead board - R-4 per inch. Often incorrectly called styrofoam. It has a pebble like structure. Extruded polystyrene - R-5 per inch. The Dow Chemical brand is Styrofoam. Styrofoam is a brand not a generic term. The Styrofoam brand is a blue color. Buy extruded polystyrene from Owens Corning and it is pink. Polyisocyanurate - R-6.5 per inch - is often found with a foil facing. Of the three choices the extruded polystyrene is probably the best choice. Expanded - bead board - can retain some moisture due to the pebble like structure. Some companies put a plastic film on it to try and stop holding the moisture. Polyisocyanurate - degrades over time and looses some of its higher R-value. If you tear the foil you should repair the opening with foil tape. Extruded polystyrene I think is the best choice. It is the most stable, it degrades less, even in direct sunlight. It doesn't retain moisture and holds its R-value better over time. I am most familiar with the Dow Chemical Styrofoam brand. It you go to a commercial insulation distributor you can find more choices in size, thickness and various styles than the usual home improvement center carries. Besides square edge you can also get tongue and groove and a lap edge. It comes in thickness from 1/2" up to 4". They even make high density in 40 and 60 psi. The standard model is 25 psi. www.dowchemical.com and search Styrofoam for some good information.

RE: ok to use wolmanized (green treated) wood ?

It has been about 5 years since I worked with this information so if my terms are wrong someone will probably help correct me. The older treated lumber used CCA and contained arsenic and other things. The treatments were changed to ACQ (if my memory is correct). One problem is that it was more corrosive. For example you could not use the standard galvanized joist hangers with the ACQ. You needed to use hangers with a heavier galvanized coating. This was specified in the local building codes. Simpson is one of the larger producers of connectors like joist hangers. They came out with a new model of connectors. They named them ZMax and they were approved for use with the ACQ treated lumber. If you go to a lumber yard or home center that carry the Simpson brand of connectors you will find both styles. Also Wolmanized is a brand of treated lumber not a generic term for treated lumber. You would need to determine what treatment the Wolmanized brand uses.

RE: 2 weeks - Where to go out west?

"Then I have been to Colorado City and driven to the top of Pikes Peak. It is the only road up to 14,000 feet in the United States." This is not correct information. The gravel road to the top of Pikes Peak goes to 14,100 ft. The highway up Mt Evans is a paved road, it is actually Colorado state highway 105. It is the highest paved road in North America. The elevation at the top parking lot is 14,130 ft. The top of Mt Evans is 14,264 ft and it is short hike from the parking lot to the top. The MT Evans Highway is also a popular bicycle ride. There are also several other old mining roads that go to the top of some of the other 14,000 ft peaks in Colorado. But some of these are closed to traffic due to private property concerns. These are also all 4 x 4 roads. There are over 54 14,000 ft mountains in Colorado.

RE: Engines/transmissions

How many miles would you have to drive to even get to the break even point on cost for this conversion? I think it will cost more than you will ever save on fuel expense. Also what happens if you are on a trip and something breaks? You are not going to be able to to a local auto parts store and find all of the parts you have used. If you want to do the conversion as a hobby project then perhaps it is OK but as a cost savings thing I doubt if it is a good idea.

RE: Is there a custom trailer builder in So Cal? How to find?

Did you search for manufacturers of race trailers? Many manufacturers of race trailers have living quarter options so they are familiar with the plumbing, electrical, etc. Also they may be more willing to build a custom design than the typical RV manufacturer.

RE: Why not put a Honda or Yamaha gen in a motor home?

The built in Honda EV4010 and EV 6010 have been available for several years. But as a dealer I know stated they are "old technology" and therefore not popular. They do not have the new features that the Honda portables have namely the quiet design and the inverter features. For what ever reason Honda has not updated the built in models and doesn't seem very interested in the built in market.

RE: When to retire?

How can anyone say they like the stress of working. When I worked I worked, most of my life was two job. I did this for over 40 years. Then one day I realized the Taxes were killing me. My 5 years of full retirement, actually retired 6 times has been the greatest time of life. If you have the income to retire on do it. But the key is Medical insurance, which we know today is the unknown. The cost of health care will go up, no question about that. Your health is the key. Why wait, waiting is the unknown and there is so much unknown. Go for it. GBY.... "But the key is Medical Insurance" "Your health is the key" You can do all the financial planning you want but if you do not make your health your number one priority you may be one of the people who have a serious health problem or die within a few years of retirement. Diet and exercise should be your first priority. Are you over weight? That has to be reduced. Do you exercise? The exercise has to have some exertion involved to be of benefit. Do you know how to measure your heart rate? There is a lot of information available on line so you need to study the information. Unfortunately many people's idea of exercise is exercise is great as long as it doesn't involve much work.

RE: Rt24 to Leadville CO

Other than two commercial campgrounds, most of the campgrounds near Leadville are forest service. No hookups. The two cmmercial campgrounds are the Leadville RV Corral 1/2 block off Harrison, Highway 24, which is the main street through town. Small, only 32 spaces. Right now you need reservations. I am currently there and my internet connection is their WiFi. The other choice is Sugarloafin which is about 4 miles outside of town. Either Highway 24 or 91 both have some steep grades. Highway 91 doesn't have as many sharp curves.

RE: altitude sickness

Being hydrated is important but it is not just drinking water that day as your going up in altitude. It is best if you start drinking extra water for one or two days in advance and then keep drinking. Water is the best. Also caffeine and alcohol can cause dehydration so cutting back or even eliminate them while at altitude can help.

RE: Leaking when remove sewer cap

A quick solution is to get one of the sewer caps that have a threaded fitting that works with a garden hose. Leave the small garden hose sized cap on and when you first start to drain you take off the small cap. You can then either hold the sewer hose under it to catch the leakage. Or catch the leakage in a bucket. You still want to do a permanent repair. The cause as mentioned is one of the slide valves probably has some debris.
