RE: Tough Times ...

We are quite happy with the arrangement, but I can understand why a lot of people would not think it was not compensation enough, and remember the topic here is "hard times". There are several reasons this works for us, the area is exactly where we want to go and hang out while we look for a place to buy, along with the site, comes wifi, electric, cable, laundry, propane and free site for family visits. It is somewhat off the main attraction area so not packed all the time. So for the most part all we have to buy is our food and pay RV insurance. The park we have been living in in Florida charges 350 a month for our site and our metered electric has been running between 200 & 300 a month. Add cable and high speed internet to the mix and it gets up there. Also, we do not want to make money, and turned down an offer to do a min wage gig, we have waited a long time to retire and working 4.5 hrs for 4 days a week fits our life plans.
That is awesome that you are able to work for just the site..unfortunately we can't do that yet...here in Coffeyville there are some retirees who have left already as they were in the same boat as you..they didn't want to work so many hours and really didn't need the money like Bill and I do. I would love to be in your position!

RE: Tough Times ...

Not sure if we just have had beginners luck, or if we will find we made a really bad deal, but knowing we wanted to work camp upon retirement we checked around for a position available in April for the summer season and got an offer within a few day's. No pay, site and associated costs in exchange for 18 hours each. It is where we wanted to go, Tennessee so are super happy about it. We live in Florida and are anxious to leave, but I would think positions here might be hard to find this year as our area seems to have been hit harder than a lot of places, and I have heard that a lot of the "snowbirds" (no offense intended) are starting to look for work camp positions where they did not in years past.
At 18 hours EACH I'm surprised they found anyone to work there. That's a lot of hours for just a free site.Sure hope it's got everything you need there.
My thoughts exactly but maybe that is a sign of the times in this economy? I hope not as if you are working at say $8 per hour that would be $288 per WEEK for the site? Aren't long term monthly site rates lower than that?

They have a pretty decent laptop for $198 on Friday...that would probably be my only reason for going...

RE: Coffeyville Amazon - new info and questions

I agree with Don, let's get the straight skinny.
Well the part about Preacher John leaving and not getting paid is straight from the horse's mouth as well as the no Thanksgiving dinner, that is from the weekly newsletter...maybe the person from Express will see this and respond like the Camping World CEO does..

Coffeyville Amazon - new info and questions

Just came in from talking to the neighbor who said that Express called this last batch of workampers and said not to show up....anybody know anything about that? Seems like quite a few people are leaving too....too many hours and not being treated like last year..at least that is the talk of the laundromat...things like no Thanksgiving dinner, Preacher John has not been paid by either Express or Amazon so he is leaving and has some lawsuit going, the campgrounds have not been paid on yet etc....

RE: owner financing

"And your better suggestion? "
YEA, stay and sell the house, if the price dont suit you dont sell, but to do what you advocate just to go fulltiming? Give me a break. I think you are looking for the easy way out NOW, and will pay the piper later. Haven't americans done that for a lot of years and see where it got em.
Wow...I think you are pretty presumptious if you ask me...you have NO idea of my situation nor my reasons for either selling or fulltiming. NOR is it really any of your business WHY we are fulltiming. Let's see..the unemployment rate in the county we live in is at 10.5%+..my husband has been out of work since April 2008 with absolutely NO chance to find employment near our home. So we are doing the AMERICAN thing and leaving to find work...or maybe it would be more AMERICAN to sit on our ass and let the rest of you pay our bills, feed our animals etc? You are so high and mighty with a good pension coming to you I assume?

RE: owner financing

"We could just have the neighbor ride by every so often to make sure that all looks well from the outside at least..."
Wow to trust your home and its value to this type of security, just amazes me.
And your better suggestion? As it is empty now and NO security companies come that far north, not that I can see paying for it anyway, yes I HAVE to trust that type of security. It is fully insured for replacement value. If we would do a land contract deal I would not have the right to go INTO the house so an exterior visual inspection would be all that could be done even if I were there myself to do it.

RE: owner financing

It seems that the "debate" centers on whether owner financing or renting, is a better exit strategy, vs selling outright. Some seem to think that it is, where others seem to believe selling outright is better. As I see it, the perils of renting can actually be offset by property appreciation over the long run, where owner financing has similar perils as renting without the bonus of long term appreciation. The real issue to be asked, is whether you actually need the extra return, vs the extra risk. For me, it was easy, no way would I accept additional risk and headaches to get such a small additional return.
I agree...I would love to sell our s&b outright but with the market the way it is I doubt it would go for what we want if at all. Especially as it is located in northern WI where there are mostly vacation homes. So this gives us something to think about as we no doubt were going to have to try to rent it out...this way we would not have to hire a formal property manager for any problems etc. We could just have the neighbor ride by every so often to make sure that all looks well from the outside at least...

RE: owner financing

I assure you that I fully understand all the issues of owner financing. And while some certainly have had sucessful transactions, in general, its not something I would want to recommend for the average home seller. There is just too much risk for such a little extra return. And the idea that experiencing a default is actually a good event, doesnt correleate to my actual experience at all.
The odds of a default on this are probably just the same odds as your renter not paying the rent and having to go to court to evict him/her. I believe the OP is trying to say there are two sides -- sell outright is one, the other is either rent out the place or "sell" with this option. Like he said you are comparing apples to oranges when you try to equate this to selling outright...My take on it is that it is another option INSTEAD of renting, not instead of selling outright.

RE: GSA 1000

From my research it's a legit job But it is a 1099 contract job and you pay ALL your own expenses from the amount they give you for the job. School pays $50/day (single or couple) and each job pays an amount set when you take the assignment. Looks like you could do a couple hundred a day IF you could get jobs close together that wouldn't be too bad. The work is complex, tedious keyboard and phone work at a client site. Caveat to me is the travel and living expenses will eat up the income so it'll pretty much be a break-even or slight loss in the end. Old company with a whole new endeavor so things will get better, or worse.......Time will tell
That was my opinion too...I'm ok with the independent contractor aspect as I have been doing it for years with my merchandising...same deal, no mileage, no drive time...you better make up a profitable route to make any money. Of course, that allows me to write off my business expenses on my taxes too though...I am thinking this would be a good fit for me with my fibro and my husband doing another workamping job...

RE: GSA 1000

It sounds fishy it's a scam and $1000 a week sounds like a Great White to me!!
That's what I am afraid of...I don't mind the computer work as my condition can take it easier than standing on my feet for 10 hours a day like at Amazon....they said you do have to travel to Tampa for 2 days of training...

RE: Winter in texas

I have not spent the winter there but my parents are winter Texans in Rockport and they have said there is great weather except January and February when the nor'easters come in....really wet then too. HTH.
PS But of course we are from northern Wisconsin so our definition of "cold" is usually quite a bit different than someone else's...
