RE: RV Bookstore

I have ordered online from the RV Bookstore a few times and have been very satisfied with the service and the product. Shipping is reasonable and arrives quickly. Don't know about the other site mentioned here.

RE: What did you do your first year as Fulltimers?

We started the FT life from the state of Washington. First 8 months we stayed in the west coast area (WA, OR, CA). Then we took off for 1 month in Virginia visiting family (so nice to be able to take our own home with us) and then spent 2 months in Florida. Our kids and grands flew to Disney World for a big family vacation. Came back to WA in the early fall of '09 and stayed put until after Christmas.
Hope you enjoy the FT life. We think it is wonderful.

RE: Rving vs camping

We are fulltimers and love our hook-ups. But, we also have a tent for when we get the urge to go "camping." RVing is a way of life for us...camping is just plain fun.
This answer is great. This poster and family can do "both" types of camping. Best of both worlds. I (personally) am done with the whole tent experience. I did it for 9 years as a Girl Scout leader for the girls in the troop, but am thankful now for my RV. :) Tent camping experiences are good for kids, IMHO, because they can learn so much about the outdoors and really enjoy being a part of nature. A lot of kids never get to do much of that anymore.
Anyhoo....whatever people want to do they should do! Works for me.

RE: Full timing beginners

Hi...welcome to the forums and the fulltime lifestyle. We are FT too. I bought 2 fantastic aprons from a woman up in Alaska. She was selling them at a Farmer's Market stall. You could do something like that. I would certainly buy things or use services provided by another RVer. RVer's helping RVer's is great. I've seen signs for barbering and dog grooming (not the same person)LOL. Why not sewing or alterations? Good luck with everything.
E-Bay is an excellent idea, too.

RE: FT'ers How often do you forward your mail?

In our opinion, we are lucky to have our DD receive our mail. She offered to take this on and is totally OK with it. She gets our mail at her house, opens anything that looks important and will phone us if something requires action. Otherwise, we have her forward everything to us every 5 to 6 weeks. We get most all important mail by paperless "mailing" so we don't get much real paper mail anymore. We only pay for postage (no forwarding services) which is about $4.95 every time she forwards it to us and that is for priority US mail.

RE: Upset with costs in Texas. What to do.

"It is up to you if you wish to take that gamble".
This is basically what we were told when we looked into the same....decided it was not worth it and chose SD. It worked very well for us, until we landed in ID......
We are not gamblers......
We aren't into gambling either. Call us foolish, if you will, but we just paid our stupid sales tax, licensed our vehicles in WA state and are OK with all of it even though we are fulltimers. Whatever works for folks and what they are comfortable with is the best way to go.

RE: Laptops in a Class "A" Diesel Pusher

At Walmart I bought one of those wooden "eat breakfast in bed" trays. I took the legs off and it can sit on my lap while DH does the driving. The tray has about a 2 inch high trim (?) all around the edge so nothing slides off. When I need to get up out of the seat I can just place the tray on the floor in front of me and leave it there until I return. I put some of that rubbery shelf liner on the table portion of the tray and it hold everything in place. Works for me.

In 2002 before we began FT life we stayed for 3 days at a small cg just 20 miles from our home. It was fun and didn't use up a lot of fuel. :B

RE: Winnebago Rest Easy Sofa

We have one in our Tour and it is fine. My 82 year old Dad slept on it when he traveled with us and now the "grands" sleep on it. Works fine. For Dad I did get one of those egg crate toppers to put on it just to make certain his "old bones" would be happy. They were.

RE: Winnebago Industries Status

Not an answer from the horses mouth....but we heard that they were OK because they were not carrying any debt during the recent crisis. We were told they had laid off quite a few people (2009) while the industry was in such a slump (read that: disaster). Maybe it is just their PR talking, don't know for sure.

RE: CAMPGROUND MEMBERSHIPS

As far as ever selling our CG membership program, we do not expect to make ANY money on it at all. We did not buy it figuring it was like real property (stick house or land) that would appreciate in value. In fact, when the time comes to "hang up the map" and sell the RV, we'll probably just throw in the CG membership program as a bonus. If we knew of somebody who really wanted it or needed it to make fulltime travel easier, we'd probably sell it super cheap, or give it to them. Our kids are not RVer's of any kind so we don't want to will it to them either.
In my RV blog on fulltime living, I posted a long piece on how much our CG membership really costs us. (archives: August 21, 2009) You have to factor in all costs, because no matter if you use it or not, you pay for it daily (divide cost of yearly dues by 365 to get cost per day to own it).
As another person posted, it is worthless if you don't use it.

RE: Get a ByPass-Miss a Trip

DH had a quad in 2005. He did very well with surgery, no complications from that. When we got the opportunity to become FT in 2007 we jumped at the chance. You never know what lies ahead and we wanted to live our dream ASAP. Since his surgery, we've driven a 40 footer to from Washington to Alaska. The next year we drove from WA to Nova Scotia. Last year we drove to FL keys. We make sure we return to WA and visit our regular physician plus the cardiologist at least once a year. Then after the exams, we make plans to tour the country again. No time like the present. DH is 62 now and enjoys our lifestyle.
Like everyone else posted, relax and enjoy life when you feel you are ready to get out there.

RE: CAMPGROUND MEMBERSHIPS

I'll put my 2 cents into this topic. We've been using our CG memberships a lot the past 4 years. Not exclusively, because we have gone to a few places where there were no member parks available. However, we try to use them at every possible opportunity. We bought our original member plan thru K/M in WA state. Through that we got the C2C, ROD, ACN, and AOR. At this point, even though we FT since 8/2008 we don't mind moving every 2 weeks or so. We enjoy traveling to new locations. Except for several weeks each year we park it at Pismo Coast Village in Pismo Beach, CA we don't stick around any one spot for more than 2 to 4 weeks anyway. We're not ready to stay put for 3 or 4 months at a time anywhere. (unless it is by our kids during the holidays) We have found member parks that have been a little scruffy looking and some that have been fabulous. We figure we aren't buying a piece of the park, we're just parking our MH there for a day or maybe 2 weeks. As long as we feel safe, our 40 ft. MH fits in the space, we're OK with it. Besides, we bought this membership package a few years ago, and darn it...we're going to put it to work for us now!!!

RE: Washer dryer ??????

As you've read the comments run the course of lots of differing opinions. Everyone is right...for what they want to get out of a W/D. They do take up some space. The combo types do take a while to complete a load. Things come out wrinkled if you overload them. This is our second RV with W/D and I'm SOLD. I'll never be without one. The only thing we take to the big laundromat in a park are 2 large throw rugs that won't fit into the Splendide we have. I usually wash 1 load of laundry everyday. Sometimes if we're busy in the daytime, I'll get the laundry going before bedtime (if it isn't clothing) and leave it run until it's finished. I'm long asleep by then and the noise doesn't bother us. Wake up to fresh towels or whatever in the morning. I don't like having to store a bunch of dirty laundry somewhere in the RV for a week to get to a public lauundromat either. Like someone said...different strokes and so on.

RE: Floor plan pros and cons

Just a couple of other thoughts on this subject. I had a "short queen" bed in a rig long ago. Never want another one. We currently live in a Winnebago Tour 40TD with full queen sized bed. We also like a TV across from our seating area. We did not want to have to crank our heads to the side to watch TV. Ouch..painful after a couple of hours. Also, unless you really, really need an extra 1/2 bath, why have one (if you could avoid it)? To me they just take up too much precious space. Everything is really just personal preference. If it works for you, it's a good thing.
Have fun searching for the MH of your dreams.

RE: How's Pismo looking lately?

We are in Pismo Beach right now. Pismo Coast Village. We've been here since Jan. 14 and we've had a lot of rain. The past couple of days mainly off and on showers. The creek is fairly wide and moving well. Beach access isn't much of a problem for most folks, it seems, as a lot of them are walking on the beach everyday. Sorry, don't know about conditions for ATV's and such as we don't do those. Weather has been high 50's but this week it is supposed to be getting into high 60's. At least that is what the MSN weather page is telling us.
Enjoy your time in Pismo.

RE: RV park hopping locally rather than being rooted for months

We plan for something sort of like your are talking about for this summer. We will be staying in Wash. state for the summer with exception of 2 weeks in Seaside, OR. We are planning to stay at parks in our membership system and just go from park to park, moving every 2 weeks. We plan to go from the Tumwater, WA area to Ocean Shores, then Long Beach, and then Seaside, OR. That will be 6 weeks of time and we have options to continue with 6 more weeks if we choose. Going from Tumwater to those locations will be more than 10 miles, of course, but still it isn't hundreds of miles of driving and using up diesel fuel. Anyway, that's our plan and we're sticking to it! Hope you have fun with whatever you decide.
