RE: Staying in a motel

YUCK!!! is finding razors and pills under the bed......or rather our little fur-babies finding those things under the bed. Yeah, that is what helped convince DW that we needed an RV. With 8 dogs, the motels are out of the question now.....:B

RE: WISE GUYS RESPONDING TO POSTS

I figure that I've got my name and where I live listed on my signature and profile. while that may not be smart, if I'm trying to hide my identity, so I can be abusive, I figure it made more sense to be me...and treat others the way I'd like to be treated... I really don't expect anyone to drive by and shoot at my house, because of comments I've made. I try to be humorous at times....I guess we all do.... I really enjoy this forum....tons of great information, and a bunch of great people too! JMHO!!

RE: WISE GUYS RESPONDING TO POSTS

Fred! What are you some kind of moron??? Only kidding:B:B.....a PM is a Private Message. You would use it when you don't want to post information in the public area....and sometimes, people will use it to post additional information and pictures, or send their private e-mail address, without it being available to "EVERYONE!" As for the OP...I'm kinda surprised that a person would be nasty in a PM...since it allow you to be just as nasty back at them....and why would they go to the effort anyway??? I've had dozens of PMs without any being out of sorts. I've been asked additional information about an item I had commented on, or responses to my own questions....all were very professional and courteous. Some people have PM'd just to ask a question about our dogs or our MH (they might have the same one) or because we live where we do......I have yet to have a problem..... And, I don't know if I'd be asking this question, unless you've had lots of negative ones, and you've only been a member for a few months....how many PMs can you have?? This is only your third question!!!:h And, I don't think I'm being a "wiseguy" for saying that?? As many have said.....lighten up...don't worry about it...with the huge number of people on this site, and a huge majority of them wonderful people, it's the rare bird who is a A-hole. JMHO!!

RE: How do you keep the MH warm while driving?

If you warm things up before you leave....and maybe again at each stop along the way, it may not be too bad to have the furnace OFF when driving. Just remember to turn it off when you stop for gas!! As mentioned, it may work while driving, but if no-one is in back, why even worry. Other option might be, if there is a problem with the furnace while underway...run the genset, and get an electric space heater amd bungee cord it to the table.

RE: Need help with my tracvision S2 and DirecTV receiver

When we bought our MH, it also had the tracking satellite, which didn't work. I found out from the DirecTV guy, who knew nothing about RV systems....that I'd do best to contact a Marine Electronics Tech. Which I did. We found that the box I had wouldn't work with the dish system on the roof....so I had to purchase an old style box on-line. (I"m not home right now, so can't get any of the information for you...sorry) Then, he had to hook up a computer and calibrate or some such thing.....while in touch with the Sat. Mfgr. on the phone.......It took a little while, but he got it figured out, and it was tracking great! I'd recommend that you either go with a newer sat dish system, or get to a Tech. who can help you with what you have. We are very limited in what we can get with this dish....I can't get the "local" stuff, as it's on a different satellite, from the one that this single receiver dish is locked on. Also, we won't be getting any HD or bonus stuff, but for now, we're happy. When it finally craps out, we'll upgrade......though I keep thinking that I'm happy watching DVDs.....why spend the $50/month:h .

RE: need some suggestions on which way to go old/newer

It usually makes more financial sense/cents to buy something that is a few years old, for the following reasons: 1.) Depreciation will be taken care of by the previous owner.....a new one will drop Thou$and$ as you drive it off the lot! 2.) The slightly used RV will have probably already had the "problems" that one finds in a new rig, already taken care of by the warranty. 3.) The warranty, which is one of the "selling points" of the new units, can often be bought through private companies, so that piece of mind is available with either new or used. Most will warranty units that are less than 10 years old. 4.) As you mentioned, you can buy used, with all the bells and whistles...and often the previous owner has added extras that you would have to pay extra for on a new unit.....we got Satellite TV, Hyd. Jack System, and an upgraded mattress...among other things, for basically free, and we still paid below market value for our RV. Of course, NEW has what you want.....you can order it just the way you want it, and it's NEW!!! But, you will get more for your money with a used one, that is in "like new" condition. MHs are not really like cars....they don't usually get a lot of miles on them, so it's not uncommon to see one that is 5-7 years old, with less than 30,000 miles on it.....and if you go the diesel route, you will have it for a looooooong time before you need to worry about that engine! We have a full slide on the side of our MH.....and quite honestly, we don't even put it out sometimes! Now, some models will require that you put the slide out for better access to the bedroom, so it really depends on the unit. As far as driving it....you would only drive with the slide "IN", and you won't notice any difference from the driver's seat......though DW may find that it's a bit tight?? Happy Hunting!!

RE: Cocktail Sauce

It may be the additives in the Ketchup....Usually, you can stir it, and it's fine. Could it also be that it's in too cold a spot, and might be starting to freeze??

RE: Winterizing - how cold?

I dont see why you just cant blow everything out good and not even worry about the pink stuff. Anyone know anyone or problems doing just this? As I understand it, blowing out the lines will get "most" of the water out, and what isn't blown out, may drain back to a low spot, and eventually freeze & burst a line. Doing both, the blow-out and adding the pink stuff will be the best way to go. I think that blowing out the lines first, will reduce the dilution of the pink stuff as you add it to the lines. And, as mentioned, it only takes a few extra minutes to do it. As to the OP.....can you spend the night in an RV at those lower temps.....yes, but you'll have the heat on, and I'd recommend having any cabinet doors that have water lines in them, open to allow the heat to get to those pipes. Also, as mentioned, disconnect and drain the outside hoses, so they don't freeze.. Oh yeah, the rules are still the same...water freezes at 32-degrees :B If the temps stay above freezing during the day, but drop to just below at night, you are probably going to be OK......unless it's a severe drop which would cause a "Hard Freeze" and problems! Good Luck!

RE: How long is too long?

If you plan to go shopping or sightseeing, and don't mind breaking camp each time, then you may not need to ever tow a car, but more than likely, you will want the freedom of being able to leave the MH at the campsite and scoot into town for something, or spend the day at an attraction, and not have to think about setting up camp again in the evening when you get back after a long day! Also, depending on the size "C" you get, will have some impact. We have the 31' MH, and you really don't want to try and find a parking spot downtown with that size rig. Getting one that is 6-8' shorter may be much easier to park and navigate, depending on where you are going. If you plan to pull into a CG that has "everything" for you and the kids (say Disney World), then you may not need to move the MH the entire time you are there. If you are bringing along bikes that would allow you to go into town, that may save the need for a Toad too! It really is a convenience thing. We haven't gotten the Toad yet, but we also haven't gotten away to places that might require it. I can see the need, and I'm hoping to use the next Tax Return to get my car set up to be towed.

RE: Replacing locks in cargo bays

The locks aren't extremely expensive...$30 ea. at Camping World, and you may be able to find them for much less on-line. The expense will depend on how many storage bays you plan to lock. Installation isn't very hard, and would only require some basic hand tools. Depending on the size of the original hole, you may have to ream it out with a file or drill bit, but most likely, it is a 5 minute swap out!

RE: gray tank vent (fills 3/4 then bubbles @ sinks)

I suspect that the vent pipe has slid down into the tank. That is what my first thought was too. Or that it wasn't mfgr'd properly in the first place? The fact that it "vents" up to that point should indicate that the vent itself is open (though still worth a check) Where does the piping enter the tank....the top, or the side? This may be part of the problem too?

RE: Shopping for class C

If you look on-line, most of the ads will also have some sort of financing institution that is linked to it. If you check local dealers, they can probably help you with financing too.....either in house, or through one of the RV finance companies. Keep in mind that the older units probably won't be financed, and I'm not sure where the "cut-off" is in their books! You asked "which online classified is most popular by dealers?"....are you asking which have the dealer ads, as compared to private sellers? Personally, I think that most of the on-line RV ads will have a variety....even E-Bay will have both Dealers and Private Sales. I can't speak for any one loan company or bank.....we paid cash for our rig. But, I would tend to think that any loan office that will give you a loan for a price that you are willing to work with, is acceptable. Just remember, you don't want to get "upside down" in the RV....where you owe more than it's worth. This happens to too many people, as the RV drops in value, but the mortgage is slower, as you tend to be paying the interest first, so have a high "Pay-Off" amount. Good Luck in whatever you do...

RE: Diluting antifreeze

It isn't the same as the green stuff you put in the radiator....that is supposed to be diluted to 50%......the pink stuff...NOT! As mentioned, it's cheap enough that you shouldn't care! If you want to save some money, blow out your water lines, and only put the pink stuff in the drains!

RE: back on the 4x4 topic....

Clicky Here I don't understand what you are talking about NC for.....this one is in Colorado??? Or did I miss something? Also don't understand why it's got dual 60-Gal holding tanks, but no toilet? 120-gallons for a dinky sink? It just sounds as if they are still working on this one....and have the tank, but not the toilet/bathroom done yet. The tag axle is a bit strange too....as it's not listing any huge numbers for weight? Oh well, it's interesting......not sure if I'd spend that kind of money for it....but to each their own!

RE: Mileage- Class C vs. 5th

I have the 31C (with V-10)with a full slide, and it seems like I'm in the 8-10 range, depending on speed and terrain. Honestly, I don't worry about it....that 2 mpg would give me an additional 90 miles on a full tank, and I might be able to get that 2 mpg if I'm driving along at 55 mph...but I want to get where I'm going, so I give up mileage for speed.....figure my time is worth something....about $35 in extra gas! Others may disagree.....and quite honestly, I will try to cut it back, if we have the time.....but what I'm trying to say, don't sweat the small stuff.....you will probably see similar mileage with the 5er....maybe better, maybe worse. You will still have a great time, and that is really worth the money!!! Happy Camping!

RE: Newbie Question: Do you leave the Water Heater on?

Welcome! We found that it takes all of about 10-15 minutes to heat up the water heater, so we leave it off most of the time....why pay to keep it warm? I'll turn it on early in the morning....and again at night before showers. I think that there are places that sell an electric element that replaces the drain plug....if you don't already have the electric option.

RE: Egg on MH

It may require a "compound" rubbing it out....then re-wax the area. We egged when we were kids......feel bad now!

RE: Semi-dewinterizing?

Being as it cost all of about $10 for 2 gallons of the pink stuff (at Walmart), I'd go and winterize the whole system again......why take a chance? You'll enjoy the hot shower more than a cold one, and it's less of a hassle than lugging buckets of boiled water to the tub in the house! Just look at what is involved in either project....decide which makes more sense to you! You might also be able to shower at a neighbor's......

RE: rv park permanebt anchor procedures

I am not sure what others do, and I am fortunate that I haven't had to tie our MH down yet! I guess you could get those Mobile Home Anchor Screws that they sell at HD or Lowes....they are used for mobile homes and sheds. You can then run the metal band/straps over the RV, or attach them to the under-carrage to keep it in one place. It is probably better to strap the entire RV down, rather than just the chassis, as it will help support the unit in high winds. Also, you would want the trailer to be off it's tires, so that they wouldn't flex or move causing wear from the straps. Of course, this would probably have to be OK'd by the park owner, and you couldn't do this on paved sites.
