RE: How many hours should a generator last?

Some friends of ours have a Prevost with a Kubota generator in it (funny part is, if I mentioned their name, then probably most everybody on here would know them...lol). Their generator (diesel) has 24k hours on it, and counting. Hasn't been rebuilt, doesn't smoke, whisper quiet, and runs strong...

Check length restrictions in most states. You want to be under 60 feet total, and you should be fine.

I am with the others. Carry as much as you can, and as much as your ability's are.
We carry right around 200lbs of tools. A complete mechanics set (Craftsman), 2 toolboxes (loaded with anything that might be of use), and one large tub filled with anything that I might find useful.
So far I have been able to fix just about anything.
Oh, yes. Our coach is 45' long, and 13' tall. We carry a electric pole chainsaw for trimming branches that are too low for us to get through.

Don't change the oil warm, change it HOT. Take it out, and drive it until the temps are up to normal temps.
After that, it takes a little finesse to keep from getting hot oil on yourself. It is VERY doable. Just look at how the oil will go, and position the pan. After that loosen the bolt with a wrench, and then start taking it out by hand. Now is the time to position yourself to where your arm is out of the way of the oil as it drains. Remember, by now the bolt will be loose, held in by a couple of threads. You might have a couple of drips of oil coming out now, but no big deal.
After you have positioned yourself to where just your arm is in there, and your hand is above the bolt (yes it is doable on every coach I have changed the oil on). Then take the bolt out. I always push IN, as I am unscrewing the bolt. That keeps it in place, until the bolt is completely out. It acts as a plug. When you know that the bolt is completely free, then pull it out (remember, until this time you are pushing in on the bolt, while unscrewing it, to prevent oil running out before you are ready).
Let the oil drain out completely, and then change your filters. I assume everybody else does this, but I always fill the filters, before installing them (if I can, and if they are oriented right). And I always lube the rubber seal on the top.

With the S60 he should do just fine. They put those in trucks that pull 80K all the time. The weakest link will be the transmission. My guess is, he is used to jackrabbiting away from stop signs, and being the first to top the hill. That won't be the case. Just relax, and he will make it to the top. You might be able to tune that baby a little more, but not for your money's worth. My guess is, he is doing just fine, realistically, and he is just used to getting places faster.
Our S60 is tuned to 425 (better fuel mileage), and we do just fine. Our coach weighs right under 50K loaded.
BTW, I hope he has a vehicle in that trailer, that can pull the trailer. He is probably overlength in a lot (probably most), states.

I agree with grldst. That looks like a good Prevost. Buying used is a great option, because the initial deprecation is gone. Second off, I would take safety to be a big factor. I just ran a quick search for "RV rollover" and this was the top link. http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=7747068
From what I have seen your regular RV's disintegrate when they roll, leaving nothing but a flat deck. However, I couldn't figure out how to post a pic of a bus roll. Anybody that is interested can PM me with their email, and I can send them the pic. The one that I have a pic of is the same one that we have. That bus held together on a complete roll, and you can't even tell it rolled (seriously, send me a PM if you want).
So if it was me, I would go for a Prevost. Not to mention they are built to go millions of miles. I don't believe that you will be disappointed.
Now, let the flaming begin. ;)

Thanks for the reply. I know, for a fact, that it is "dripping" (I am a detroit man, so hence the term slobber, both fitting). I said that it is coming out of the vent tube, out of the tranny. It is red Trynsend.
And we are checking it electronically, with the shifter, and I am not using the dipstick at all. The shifter module is much more accurate then the dipstick.

B500 trouble...please help!

Our B500 has recently started slobbering out of the vent tube. I know that it isn't overfilled, since it has been 40K since we filled it (Trynsend). We have checked it on the readout, on the shifter, and it says good. I also tried changing filters, but that didn't fix it.
It drools as it is sitting there idling. Does anybody have any ideas?

I thought there was a check valve in the airbags that prevented the suspension from lowering when there is no air pressure remaining?
Maybe I'm just seeing an illusion but in any case dumping the brake air assures me no one can release my parking brake. I will check it out again this weekend. We have had it for a year now and still learn new stuff all the time.
JH is right. There should be a check valve to prevent the air to escape out of your airbags. If you do settle down, you probably have a bad check valve.

I think you need a set. I can sell you mine. I will part with them for $500. You REALLY need them. And I REALLY need to sell mine (can't afford them anymore :B ) Oh, yes, I also have a bridge that is in perfect condition, for only $50K. You want to buy? :B
Seriously, though, I don't think you need them. We don't even cover our tires. I just keep tire black on them all of the time to keep them from drying out.

There is just ONE step better then an Aqua-hot. Oasis Those guys don't have as snazy a website, but man do they have a better product. We can't smell ours, when it fires up, it has two immersion electric heaters (for when you are plugged in, of course), and it is just a great all around heater.
We love ours! And it works great.

Jim, I agree with you. We try to abide by as many laws as we can. The problem is, if a officer stops you, and wants to cite you, he can and will find something, anything. That is why on the length, we want to get as close as we can....

If you get stopped, get a permit on line and continue your trip, delay should be less than a day. Ticket cost is another subject.
What kind of permit are you talking about? I haven't been able to find one. All of the HP officers that I have talked to on the phone, said that there is no other options, unless you want to go with the oversized (length in this instance) load stuff. Then you have to have a big sign, yellow flashing light, etc, etc.
So I would be curious what you are talking about?

I had the same problem. I tried strap wrenches, regular oil wrenches, everything.
I finally went and purchased a Vicegrip chain wrench, like this oneVisegrip Chain wrench
I got that puppy off with that (of course, it dug into the filter a long ways, but since it was gripping all of the way around, it worked). With these cheap filters, nowadays, I wouldn't try the screwdriver.

We do try to keep the laws, and getting a ticket is one thing.
However, if you are breaking a law, and get caught, they WILL make you stop breaking the law. Same with the trailer. We are not pulling a toad, then a boat or something, so we could just unhitch the toad, and roll with it pulling the trailer. If we get stopped, and have to drop the trailer, that means that we have VERY expensive towing to get it to where we can rent a car, to pull it out of state.
We are just going to consolidate, and save our towing money.
I was just wondering if anybody has had problems with towing...

Nope, 12 foot box. Tongue add some, I know. We still are much safer then with a 20 footer.
Does the 12 feet include the tongue and hitch? It would be a small trailer if it does.
I agree with the last couple of posts. Just because they haven't gotten stopped yet, doesn't mean that it won't happen. I would sure have to have my trailer towed for a long ways, then try to figure out how to get it out of state. The officers WILL make you drop it, if you get stopped and are over length.

Thanks, Ray. If we were able to stay under 60 feet, I think that we would be fine. It looks like we are going to order our custom built 12 foot trailer, to pull behind our class A coach (45 feet).
Anybody else run into length restrictions?

Anybody in Oregon that has a rig over 50' long? I am curious how the special length permit works?
Anybody else ever had any problems being over length, and getting stopped, and having to drop the toad, trailer, whatever?
