RE: RV's turning into first home.

Back in the early 70's there was very little work in Northern Calif. The wife and I had no choice but to live in an older (1957) 30' travel trailer. It was all we could afford and the minimum wage jobs available hardly covered the food/fuel to stay alive. Kind of like the U.S. today.
I can see where the image of recreational RV's might get a little tarnished with people migrating to the RV for a residence, but when it comes to staying warm, having a roof over the families head and keeping the family safe I give kudos to the person who will live in the RV ... regardless of its age. As far as those who have never been "without" passing judgement on others trying to stay alive in this economy I suggest you get a grip on reality.

RE: Lanterns?

We have a couple dual mantle colemans, but also use a couple medium size solar powered yard lights for my grandkids to use in thier tents. Just stick them in a bucket during the day to charge and they will run for hours after dark.

RE: Extended time in TT

We lived for 3 months in this 27' Wilderness during the winter of 2008 in Northern Nevada. It had served us well. You will need to give careful consideration as to what you actually need inside. Keeping water from freezing was the toughest part, but that was overcome.

Home sweet home while our new S&B was being built in 2008. Its a 2003 Wilderness 27GL and has served us very well camping and posing as a second home for 3 months while the house was being built.

RE: Paranoid

it was great fun for us kids to knock on doors late at night and then run like the dickins, hitting entire blocks at a time.
And you know why you ran? Cause if you got caught you would have received a butt kicking.
You are right about that, would have gotten by the home owner and my folks ... at 10 years of age that wasn't much of a concern, unless I got caught. :B

RE: Paranoid

In reality, I doubt that there is anymore instances of it happening now then there were 10 years ago. Now we have instant media where a reported burp from a neighbor hits FaceBook before the offending burper can wipe thier face. Some 45 years ago it was great fun for us kids to knock on doors late at night and then run like the dickins, hitting entire blocks at a time.
If you get the dreaded banging on the RV stay inside (behind locked doors with interior lights off) and offer to use the cell phone to call Law Enforcement (through closed doors). If the knocking continues after that, assess the situation again, and take appropriate action from there (call LE, rack the 12 gauge, get the pepper spray ready, or make some coffee) ;-)

RE: Lightweight camper reccomendations

We ran into the same issues as you did. Hauling the 27' TT out for a simple weekend was a pain. We decided on getting an 8' TC that was light enough to not make much difference when getting off road and having the ability to tow our flatbed trailer with all the toys if desired. We went with the Lance 805 and love it. My truck doesn't even know its on the back of it, it provides everything we need for a simple weekend, and we keep a porta-pot in it for the wife.

Wilderness/Fleetwood wheel question.

Greetings,
I have a 2003 Wilderness 27' GL TT with 205/75-15C tires on it. I would like to replace the OEM tires with 225/75-15D tires. I couldn't find any PSI stamps on the outside of the wheel. My question is ... will the factory wheels handle the additional 15 PSI required for the 225/75-15 tires?
It would be easy to just drag the TT to a shop, but it has been sitting so long I doubt it would make it out of the driveway with the existing tires (badly weather checked) and I live 50 miles to the nearest tire shop.

RE: Downsizing? From What to What? What Did You Do?

Although we still have our 27' TT, we now use our little Lance TC for the two or three day camping trips. We like the ease of getting in and out of the back country spots the TC provides us.
The TT will be our standby incase things get worse with the economy.

RE: what the heck is that??

I'm thinking to many people feel, or have the need, to stick thier nose into others business from a negative view point ... such as giving someone a lot of grief for doing what they can without being on the public welfare roles. Granted, maybe WalMart isn't the best place to set up a homestead, but it very well could be the only choice those people have.
It would give me great pleasure to bend the nose of a busy-body who just feels the need to cause trouble for others.

RE: Truck Camper vs Truck + T.Trailer

We have both. We like to take the ATV & RUV out into the boondocks and the TC is perfect for letting us do that. It also allows us to just take off for a couple of days w/o the headache of towing the trailer, but anything over 3 days DW demands the TT.

RE: Is your RV a toy?

I posted that. RVs are toys in the sense that they are not appreciating assets. I also include boats and some vacation property in that category. If it appreciates its an asset - everything else is an expense. The fact that we live fulltime in our toy doesn't magically turn it into an asset.
Using your analogy, and keeping in mind the current economy, most sticks & bricks homes are depreciating and are therefore an expense. :BRather, over the past couple of years, many people's sticks and bricks houses are TOYS.
My point exactly :W

RE: Wal-Mart, Salem Oregon

I wish you people would quit trying to stay over night at wal marts, I think you should try to stay in a church parking lot. at least you will be in good company. At our local wal mart I have seen the same RV parked in the far corner for the last year. that's a bit over the wall if you ask me.
I have no understanding how it should concern you if there is an RV there or not, and believe you will have to get use to that vision with the economy as it is.
There are tent cities here in the Reno area and Sacramento, as there is in most cities across the country ... better get accustomed to seeing more of it as our society erodes forcing people to what they must to survive.

RE: Forgive me TC Forum for I have Sinned!!!

Ironic ... I haven't moved the TT in a few years now and use the TC in its place, but mostly because I pull the Teryx on the trailer behind it. Decided to keep the RUV on a trailer instead of a TH simply because of all the mud, dirt, dust and other debris that would drop off into the TH (should I have bought one).
Good luck on your decision!

RE: What areas are the most desolate ?

"I suspect many of those who have read those comments would join the mass exodus turning Idaho into the new California."
Lobocop, You got that right! Maybe that's good ... as the more that leave CA the more it can revert back just a tiny bit to the old California.
BTW, we overnighted with our Class C near the Ruby Mountains last year halfway up a mountain. It looks like an interesting area for exploring and camping. I read recently that this area has somewhat skipped the economic downturn.
Pupeperson (posted above) and I have hunted/camped at the southern end of the Ruby's for years together. It is beautiful country and the gold mines are keeping the area towns in the black with this garbage economy.

RE: What areas are the most desolate ?

"I doubt seriously you could go anywhere that would be really safe (depending on the type of disaster)."
Try this site for locating supposedly the best place in the U.S. for surviving "the big one" - however you might define that. I believe current thinking is that the optimum areas are located in Idaho, with respect to a list of criteria posted in links at this site.
I'm not sure how these areas would be for general pleasure RV'ing, however, since when RV'ing the idea many have (myself included) is to carry along all of our short-term sustinence needs so as to be able to survive for at least a few days "anywhere" we might want to go - including the many pristine, isolated, and very desolate places mentioned in this thread where even the Idaho survivalist types would not choose to try and make it year after year:
http://www.survivalblog.com/
Thanks, but I have been there and read many of the comments made, just as many thousand other people have. I suspect many of those who have read those comments would join the mass exodus turning Idaho into the new California.
