RE: Read only

TreeSeeker..
I copied the files that weren't read only from the read only folder and pasted them to a folder on the desktop but I can't E-mail a folder of the files only individual ones. Works won't accept them either. I've given up on the project........... We're leaving in the morning to go desert camping for a few days. It's probably our last chance before the weather gets too hot.............
I hope you're right about it not being not all my fault though I admit to not being "the sharpest tool in the box" when it comes to messing with this computer.
Thanks for all your help...

RE: Affordable 3/4" Torque Wrench

jerrybo,
I didn't have any 3/4" drive ratchets, let alone a long 3/4" breaker bar, so I figured an inexpensive long torque wrench would do nicely to keep the bolts tight. I know $80 doesn't buy anything close to precision.
We did find the dealer who installed the hitch and said " this air wrench is putting out way over 400# of torque" was full of beans. We found the bolts needed an extra 100# of torque when we got home.
Apparently a crude torque wrench is more accurate than nothing.
I am a worrier and feel good checking things like this. That's all.\
You are so right on not believing what a dealer tells you. I buy all my tires at Discount Tire and insist the studs are torqued but after they run them on with an air wrench, of course they're going to torque with a wrench. They assure me they are but their "safety extension" only guards against over tightening. When I get the vehicle home I loosen them and farmer tight all lug nuts. Some would take a Hulk Hogan to break loose on the road.

RE: Affordable 3/4" Torque Wrench

This is one topic I cannot understand. Torquing hitch components. Big time torque wrenches especially un-accurate Chinese made ones. Torque specs need to be adhered to with head bolts, manifold bolts, bearings, etc. but hitches, I don't believe it. I've been "farmer tightening" anything between the truck and trailer for over 50 years and haven't lost anything yet. There are enough specifications out there to drive an engineer crazy but in reality don't mean much to a person with half ounce of common sense. At this time I am working on the motor of my 1973 Ford PU with my Made in USA Craftsman torque wrench but my hitches are farmer tight with my Made in USA 3/4 drive ratchet. FWIW, I installed the Equalizer when I bought the trailer in '03 and haven't had to adjust any bolts. The trailer still follows wherever I go..... :) .... IMO.

RE: Pittsburgh PA to the Grand Canyon

I find it kind of funny with the "doable" and "can be done" posts but I totally agree. Before we got the trailer I used to figure 40 hours, door to door, Mesa AZ. to Pittsburgh and the same on the return. Add a couple hours over the steering wheel snooze. Then it was just a "get there" deal but now I'm lucky to get out of the driveway without needing a nap. :B. I think the last time we drove to Pittsburgh with the trailer it took four, maybe five days. (The wife didn't threaten to kill me for not stopping for meals etc. either). :) Life is good (and probably longer) in the slow lane........ "Too soon old ve get und too late schamart".

RE: Pittsburgh PA to the Grand Canyon

I'm an old Pittsburger (North Hills)and have driven to Phoenix several times also. I would think Yosemite would be too far for the time you have. My suggestion would be as Red Eagle suggested, do The Canyon,Zion and Bryce. There's not much scenery until you get into N. Mexico so driving that distance could get boring. 89 from Page, (Lake Powell) to Kanab along the vermillion Cliffs is spectacular. The colors at Bryce are better than the Canyon but naturally not as big. It's only about 35 miles off 89 on 64 to the South Rim of the GC. I think the SR is better than the North though some may differ. If you consider Yellowstone/Tetons I think no less than 4-5 days are needed. "Yenz" have a safe trip and don't forget to pack some jumbo and chipped ham sammiches.. :)

RE: Some people do not like snowbirds

I'm always glad to see the snowbirds leave in the Spring. I buy hundreds of pounds of wild bird seed and WangMart raises it's prices on the seed because they know you folks like to feed the birds. The local produce market lowers the quality of their produce and still raises the price. This isn't right and I've mentioned it to the store managers but of course they denied it. That being said, you folks keep coming, we need you. If any ignorant yahoos make derogatory comments you tell them Jerrybo from Mesa said they should just go to "Hill" and get over it... :B

RE: Read only

Try loading a read-only file into Works, then save it with a new name, and see if it is marked as read-only.
I opened a new Works Document, clicked insert/file, and it wouldn't continue with letting me select a read only file to insert. I did the same thing with a file that wasn't a read only and it transfered it to the Works document. All the individual recipes are not read only but the folder they're in is.... In "My Pictures" some pictures are read only and some aren't. I think I transfer them the same way..
I've been told that these machines are "sheet in, sheet out" so I guess I'm doing something wrong but thinking I do the same for everything I put into this thing, I don't know what I'm messing up....
Thanks for your help...

RE: Read only

MINE ARE DEFINITELY CHECKED. IF I ATTEMPT TO CHANGE THE ATTRIBUTES IT GOES THROUGH THE TIME PROGRESS BAR BUT NOTHING CHANGES
Can you change the read-only attribute of just a file?
Nope. Once it's checked whether in a file or folder it's like chiseled in stone.
This Devil Machine has a devious mind of it's own. About once a month it will mute the sound but at least it lets me turn it back on. If this thing keeps messin' with me it's gonna find itself in the City recycle bin.... :M

RE: Canadian bacon

Five days doesn't sound long enough for a cure but did it turn out tasting like bacon or ham? I used Hi-Mountain Buckboard Bacon cure on loins and it turned out just like ham. Still good but not bacon flavor. I use Con-Yeager ham cure on boneless pork loins and it turns out really good ham flavor. I boil it rather than smoking. We just have mesquite wood here which is great for red meat and chicken but I don't care for it with pork. No matter what the recipe or method home made is still much better than the store bought fat filled garbage.

RE: Read only

I can attach the individual files in the folder to E-mail but they won't open when I sent them to myself as a check.
Can you open other attachments sent by anyone?..................
NO PROBLEM OTHER THAN POWER POINT.....
Are you able to open any of the Works files that you saved (without emailing them)?.................
EVERTHING WORKS UNLESS I TRY TO MOVE OR SEND THEM. I CAN OPEN THEM AND READ THEM ON MY COMPUTER BUT THAT'S ABOUT ALL. .
Are all the Works files marked as Read Only?...
NO.........
Note that folders may appear to be Read Only when they are not. By default they have a checkbox that is shaded (mine is green). This is confusing but really means that the checkbox is nil (not filled out). If you click on the box once it becomes clear (white) and again then it has a check. Only if it has a check, is it Read Only...........
MINE ARE DEFFINATELY CHECKED. IF I ATTEMPT TO CHANGE THE ATTRIBUTES IT GOES THROUGH THE TIME PROGRESS BAR BUT NOTHING CHANGES...

RE: Read only

Are you retrieving these files from a CD/DVD and then saving them to your hard drive? By default, files stored on a CD are set to read only.
No CDs involved. From Camp Cooks and Connoisseurs to Works Word Processor to Recipes in My Docs.......
I must disagree with you that a six pack is a support group. The trouble this devil machine causes, it takes a lot more than a six pack to console me.. :B

RE: Cargo trailer conversions

My wife is getting less interested in camping so I converted a 6x10 cargo trailer into a toy hauler. It's a bit small but adequate for me. It's as big as they make with a single axle, I didn't want a tandem. I built in windows, cabinets, sink, folding table, ventless heater, stove, micro-wave, pressurized water, etc. I haul my ATV then unload and open a folding cot for sleeping. I can send pictures to your E-mail address if you would like to get an idea of what can be done to them.
It's quite a bit of work so maybe a standard trailer with a rack would be better. Good luck with your search.

RE: Read only

It was ignorant of me not returning to my post but have been busy and haven't been on this machine. It's 2:30AM and playing catch up.
I checked "Users" and I am the Owner/administrator. It seems like the Folders in My Docs are read only but some of the contents aren't. The pictures in my "Kodak" folder are read only also. Some of the other WPS files in other folders aren't read only. Nothing seems to be consistent.
What started this problem was that I copy/pasted recipes from Camp Cooks to the Works Word Processor then saved them to a Recipe folder in My Documents. They are designated a WPS files. Individual WPS files, not in a folder aren't read only. I can attach the individual files in the folder to E-mail but they won't open when I sent them to myself as a check. I have to Copy/paste them. I wanted to send the whole recipe folder to a buddy who just got a new set of teeth. :) I have run an AVG and Ad ware scans that found nothing. I have Service Pak 3. I also delete all cookies except the ones that get used such as RVnet. I want to thank all you folks who are trying to help.

I should of checked before I suggested the park at the Superstitions. It's the Lost Duchman State park and will close June 3rd. They charge 15 bucks with no hookups.

RE: 2WD vs 4WD in Snow

I will never be without a four wheel drive vehicle. It's not only about towing in the snow but what about having to pull off the hard road for a flat tire, pit stop etc.? Sometimes you can't tell if it's hard or soft. Where we desert camp the seven mile road in to our spot is level but when it's wet the dirt turns to the consistency of baby brown stuff. 4x4 is essential. Maybe it costs a bit more in gas mileage on some trucks but the insurance is worth it to me... IMO.

32 miles S.E of Mesa is the closest I know of. An RV park such as in the Superstitions in East Mesa may be better for the cost versus travel. ????

RE: Transmission Cooler

Are you sure you don't have a transmission cooler???? I would be surprised if you don't.
If you're worried about the transmission, be sure you have some proper Mercon or Mercon V rated (whatever is recommended for your vehicle) synthetic fluid in the tranny. It will handle much higher temps without degrading.
Guardian...
If your '97 has the E4OD transmission as mine does both Ford service managers and their parts man said not to use synthetic fluid when I changed mine. When I had it changed the second time by who I consider "Mr. Transmission" here in Mesa he didn't suggest synthetic. This tranny didn't have a good reputation for a while but he told me that if I did a regular change I would have no problems. So far so good..

RE: Transmission Cooler

I believe all trucks come standard with the integrated transmission coils in the main radiator. The optional tow package includes a secondary cooler in front of the radiator. The Tru-Cool, installed in series, just adds extra cooling for the trucks that has to work hard in hot weather.

RE: Transmission Cooler

I installed the largest Tru-Cool in my PSD and it dropped the tranny temps 20*. I had a temperature gauge before and checked it on the same stretch of road pulling the trailer. I got the one without the by-pass because it doesn't get cold here in this part of AZ. I would recommend the auxiliary cooler. Check the dementions but you should have room for one.
