RE: 355 rear end

Well, it would really depend on just how much weight you plan to tow. The 3.55 definitely isn't the right ratio for serious towing but you might get by with a small light trailer. The lower the number of the rearend ratio, the slower the engine will be turning over at cruising speed; good for gas mileage but bad for towing because the engine is developing less horsepower at lower RPM's. It's sort of like trying to pull a load in a slightly higher gear and "lugging" the motor. You can't tow any 5th wheels except the very smallest and not very big ones even with the 3.73 in a half-ton truck. I do tow a 25 ft. 5th wheel with a half-ton Chevy and the 3.73 and it does OK but not much to spare.

RE: HELP!!! Dropped object in toilet

I dumped a plastic fork down ours and it came out quite a lot later when I was flushing out the tanks with water at home in my driveway. I think if it had stuck crossways I would have had a problem.

RE: I don't understand....

Something is very wrong with this picture. Sounds way off. My half ton truck just does and adequate job with our much smaller 25 ft. 5th wheel with no slides and a dry wt. of 5,200 lbs. Dodges may be good but not that good. Could it be highly modified?

RE: electric space heaters

We like the Vornado and it has been recommended by Consumer Reports. It looks like a black fan. Not real big so good for an RV. What we like about it is that the fan runs all the time and just puts out warm air as needed, never hot air and never hot to the touch. The heating is very even. You can set the temp you want, like a thermostat. and it has a lo and high setting. Fairly pricey at around $90 but worth it in my opinion if it last several years which we don't know yet. I would get the model with electronic controls as the switch broke on our 1st one(replaced at no charge under warranty)

RE: West coast of Florida sights?

On your way from the east to west side, I would camp in Everglades NP and see the Park, then head west on 2 -lane Rt. 41 through the Big Cypress Nat'l preserve and spend a night or 2 at Midway campground, another Nat'l Park campground but with elec. hook-ups. Both of these locations offer a lot of natural attraction, allagators, etc. closer to Naples, Collier-Seminole St Pk is good also. Much further north, don't miss Myakka River St Pk, the largest in the state with many trails, scenic driving and a forest ceiling boardwalk.

RE: Private vs Public cost

I think, in the long run you will save a lot with public campgrounds, especially with the Golden Age Pass and federal campgrounds. I would probably prefer state and national campgrounds even without the cost difference because they are more natural and less crowded. However, there is a lot of difference in prices. For example, Florida state parks can run from the low to upper $20's per night while some national forest campgrounds could be as low as $5 with the pass. Also, very few national park campgrounds have any hook-ups and, while state parks, may have elec. and/or water; almost never sewer.

RE: gas mileage?

That sounds a little disappointing with a diesel but not too far off expected as I talk with people all over. 30 ft is pretty big which means lots of weight. Ford diesels seem to get lower MPG. I pull a much lighter and shorter 5th wheel with a half-ton gas Chevy and averaged just under 10 over 2000 miles going east to west.

RE: Joining Good Sam's Club...is it a good idea.

I guess it's a matter of opinion and what your needs are. Personally, for us we found it not helpful so we didn't rejoin. We much prefer public campgrounds, state, national parks, etc. So, the 1 or 2 times a year we might stay at a Good Sam Park; not worth the cost of membership and all the paper they bombard you with trying to sell stuff. Also, had a couple of irritating experiences at Good Sam parks which I won't try to go into.

Help- busted antenae

We have a small older 5th wheel with a winegard antennae, I guess like most RV's have, with the crank on the ceiling that raises it. We were trying to turn the antennae as usual and something let go and now the handle won't raise or lower it. I went up on the roof and couldn't see much except that the cogged wheel which turns another wheel to raise the antennae, is loose and not making good contact. Not being real good at fixing stuff I'm inclined to not mess with it and just call the local mobile repair guy but if I keep turning the crank counterclockwise will it come off and might I find something simple that even I could fix??

RE: Glacier National Park Campground

We work in West Glacier, which is at the west entrance to the Park. It's a fantastic place and national Park and that's why we come here and work and live in our 5th wheel. However, Oct. would really be pushing it season wise. Our store and just about everything else in West Glacier shuts down Sept 20 something so that tells you about the climate here. Also, the main attraction of the Park, The Going To The Sun road across the Park will be closed or have limited access by then. It has already snowed on the highest point of the road through the Park. It could be beautiful, especially in early Oct. if you are prepared for the limited services, etc. Obviously people do come and camp in the open campgrounds.

RE: Earning Extra $$ Using The Internet

I know that people do what you are hoping to do but call me a skeptic. If making money while staying at home were fairly easy, all the unemployed people(and others) would be jumping on it. I think one needs some very specific skills that not many people have to make it work. I think a lot of people dabble in something and either don't really make much for their time or exaggerate. Good Luck.

RE: "Natural" RV Campground or RV "Resort"

What got us into "camping" over 30 years ago was the opportunity to "live in the woods"(or desert or by the river)and we still prefer public, campgrounds like nat'l, state parks, etc. There are really 2 very different types of RVers though sometimes they overlap. Those campers like us who like natural and those who's top priority is the campground, what amenities it has, all the hook-ups, etc. and often prefer "RV resorts". It's more like the 2nd group is taking their homes with them and need campgrounds which support that. Nothing wrong with either, just different. We realized it when we had RV friends who kept recommending their favorite campgrounds and we realized those were exactly the one's we would not prefer. Too artificial, too well groomed, like someone's perfect lawn or like the city park at home.

RE: Uninterested Salemen

You could request a different salesman. But don't loose sight that it's really the RV you are interested in and you only need the salesman to do the paperwork.

RE: Having second thoughts...care to share yours?

I guess we need to know what jobs you are being hired for but that policy raises a red flag to me. Part of the fun of our jobs and our value to our employer is interacting with and serving customers. A lot of young or foreign workers don't do that very well and customers appreciate our "mid-western" friendliness.

RE: How stupid...

We have worked in retail stores around Nat' Parks now for 8 summers and we won't disagree with you. But, we've also learned, it ain't going to change so we just have to learn to deal with it and not take it personal.

RE: How about a few good stories?

We work in a store near Glacier NP and enjoy meeting interesting, Such as the older gentleman who comes in and buys potato salad. He hangs out in and around the Park all summer, has a bicycle, a tent and no car and just moves from campground to campground. Well spoken and seems educated.

RE: HELP NEWBIE

Do not listen to the sales people about "half-ton towable". Do your own research and make your own judgment based on your truck. When they say half ton towable, what they often mean is by one of the newest half-tons equipped in every possible way to the max for towing; ie, biggest optional motor, numerically highest rearend, etc. For example such a truck may be rated to tow over 10,000 lbs. but my 2007 Chevy pretty well equipped but not the maximum for towing is rated for about 7,500; big difference.

RE: Activities when camping

Love to hike while camped in state/national parks with forests, waterfalls, mountains, etc. It's great exercise and the best way to really see the sights and get away from crowds. And it's free. If you aren't in shape, start gradually with short 1 to 3 mile hikes and work your way up to day-long hikes.

RE: Another weight ?, just for comparison

I think 5000 lbs is 5000 lbs. Only difference is that there is much more weight over the bed and axle with a 5er instead of being mostly behind the truck. It should work the motor the same.
