RE: What will happen if I don't dump my waste before winter?

Sounds like a bad idea. I would drain it into a bucket and dump it down the stool in your house.

RE: Looking for agood small generator

Honda 2000. One of the best purchases we ever made. It will run everything in our small 5th wheel (I don't trust it with the AC) including the microwave and toaster oven though not all at one time. The price is high but its flawless.

RE: General Fidelity Extended Warranty

My advice- Forget the extended warranty. Over the period of a lifetime of buying lots of items, you will come out way ahead by puting that money in an account to have for unexpected repairs. The extended warranty for "peace of mind" is a very expensive luxury. I don't deny that it could work out to your advantage for 1 item in the short run but not long term. If you really can't afford a repair that might come up, then can you really afford the item?

RE: Volunteering for a full timer

Workamper News magazine is a good resource for all kinds of jobs. Campground hosting in state and national parks, etc. is popular. Usually 20-30 hrs. per week is required and you get a free site. but often the site has full hook-ups where the normal campers don't get that. We have worked for 7 of the past 8 summers in and near Yellowstone and Glacier NP. We prefer to work for pay and those jobs are available also.

RE: Ever Been Asked to Leave?

No, never have. We have used at least 6 or so Walmarts and one time a Cracker Barrell (I did ask there) and they said OK even though they aren't open all night. The Police have driven through and no problem. Once they did ask about an old trailer that had been aparently parked there several days. I don't ask anymore at Walmart unless I am skeptical about it for some reason. I know there are some Walmarts that "officially" don't allow it but will still hint that it's fine.

RE: Discrimination against RV's bigger than 30'

We park our 25 ft 5th wheel in our driveway and don't have any problems and I don't really know the answer to this issue but I have to say --39 ft. is one BIG motorhome. Sorry, I just don't get wanting one that big so don't have a lot of sympathy.

RE: W. Yellowstone to W. Glacier

I don't remember route mumbers very well but ironically we have workamped at both locations and for the last 3 summers at West Glacier so have made the trip a number of times. We took the route that runs north out of W Yellowstone up to the interstate by Bozeman, then to Missoula and north using the route along the east side of Flathead Lake. Quite scenic and no problems except that there is, or at least was last summer a pretty major coustruction project just north of Missoula. That can be avoided by a route that sort of angles from near Helena, northwest to Bigfork. Sorry, don't have a map here with me.

RE: we are looking at a new and used. Which one?

Just a comment on the idea of buying new so as to have a full warranty. While true, you pay dearly for the priviledge. Also, if you keep the unit long term, the warranty will go away anyway.

RE: we are looking at a new and used. Which one?

My belief is that used is always way less money in any kind of vehicle, including RV's. It's not just initial cost but less depreciation. However, if the used one is too close in cost to the new one just like it, something is wrong. They probably have it overpriced just hoping for a "sucker" to come along so I would make them an offer way less. Who would pay almost the same for used as brand new- No one I know.

Vinyl plank flooring in RV?

I asked about and got some good info on the possibility of installing the snap together laminate "floating" floor in our 5th wheel. But now I'm wondering about the vinyl "planks" that also look like wood and seem easier to install and cut than the laminate. However, the company doesn't recommend it in an RV because the temp extremes may cause the adhesive to fail. Has anyone done it anyway and had success? What about the kind that isn't adhesive backed and requires puting glue down 1st?

RE: Coast to coast pulling a 20-25 foot trailered

We've been pulling a 25 ft 5th wheel all over the country for years. We wouldn't think of taking long trips without the trailer. 1st thing is to make sure your tow vehicle is more than adequate for the trailer; ie, not overloaded. Mountains are a challenge but just take a little geting used to and to make sure you have adequate power and brakes and that you know how to use your gears to help on downgrades. Otherwise, its just a matter of planing ahead a little to make sure a campground will accommodate your size trailer and don't start down any backroads or enter any parking lots without knowing that you will have space to turn around or camp.

RE: Retirement what is it?

Retirement for me is the freedom to not worry about maintaining a full-time job to make a living. So, our 10 weeks of workamping in summer is always a choice, not a necessity. If you find that you are just too busy to RV even though "retired", just remember that all those activities you are caught up in are a choice. They may be choices that you don't want to give up or don't think you can give them up but nevertheless, still choices. You may want to re-structure your life so as to have more free time or maybe you like it the way it is too much to change?

RE: Florida

We have used Fl state parks in winter for several years and they all have water/elec hookups and some are very nice. The problem is that it is very difficult to get in to or to get reservations for the ones in southern Fl and near the coast. You can reserve up to 11 months in advance and that's what people do. I don't care for private campgrounds so don't know much about them. If you are willing to use northern and more inland state parks you can get sites. Also, the panhandle st parks may have sites in early to mid-winter.

RE: Another Towing Question

My tow/haul does not completely lock out OD, its just that it won't shift into OD unless you are flat and with almost no load. So, it will never shift into OD towing but will solo.

Installing laminate flooring

We are going to have a soft spot in the floor repaired on our small 5th wheel. Some floor covering will have to be removed anyway so we are thinking of just having it all removed then replacing it ourselves with the snap together laminate flooring. Except for some tricky cutting, seems fairly easy? Anything we should watch out for or know about or any difficulties not apparent?

RE: Another Towing Question

I don't want to worry you but my torque converter frequently kicked in and out before the trans went oun on my 2000 half-ton Chevy truck and it quit with a new trans. That's what it would be unless its actually kicking down a gear which would really be noticeable. With my tow/haul on, the truck never shifts into overdrive(4th gear) but the torque converter will lock up on pulls and it changes the rpm's a few hundred but definitely not constantly.

RE: Short bed compliant 5th wheels - Brookstone

I don't know about that trailer but we bought a 99 Jayco, 26 footer, 6 years ago to go with our ext cab, short box and I've never regretted it. Ths salesman said I wouldn't need a slider hitch and I agree. Oh, I could get the trailer into the side of the cab but just have to pay attention and never a need to jacknife that much anyway.

RE: Used Diesel Prices?

Sounds like they are high. It's seeming more like I may stick to a 1/2 ton gasser to pull my small 5th wheel because I will be able to get so much more truck for a given amount of money.

Air Compressor Advice?

I carry a battery powered air pump and it works great for bikes and will do for adding a few pounds to my trailer tires but forget it for the truck. I'm thinking I need to carry a small air corpressor to do it all but I don't quite know enough. How big do I need? Do they come with adapters that will fit our bikes as well as the vehicle tires? Will it run off of my 2000 W generator if I'm dry camping? And if you use it to winterize by blowing out the water lines, how do you do that? Where do you blow with it?
