RE: After Market Brakes on a 2000 Ford F-350

Bryan,
My information shows these figures for my F-450:
2008 F450 gross lining area rear 55.6 Total swept area per axle rear 361.9
2008 F450 gross lining area front 55.6 Total swept area per axle front 337.2
2008 F450 rotor dia. Rear 15.35
2008 F450 rotor dia. Front 14.53
It would seem that the rear rotors at 15.35 in would be a problem.

RE: After Market Brakes on a 2000 Ford F-350

You can install the F450/550 rotors. They have more material, so are more heat tolerant. Ford also sells a severe duty version of your brake pad.
How would you get those big diameter brakes inside a 350's wheels? The MDT rigs have 19.5 wheels.

RE: Newfoundland Travel Tips

Our 2005 trip was about 6 weeks on "The Rock" and 3000 miles of driving and we still did not see it all. Thanks to Little Kopit for lots of good info for our trip.
Here is our route some of which we drove twice:

RE: New camper and truck questions

I also have a bigfoot with the 11,000 btu air my 2000 runs it but it bogs down on start up you can see the little red light come on.
What is a Supac start capacitor? Is it something i can install and where would you go to get one.
Here is a link
It worked fine for me.

My Honda 2000 would run an 11,000 after I installed a Supac start capacitor. I now have a 9000 btu air cond., which will run at 9500 ft

RE: Replacing the Dinette with a recliner or couch

CT did you mount the complete rail system for the Jeep seats or did you modify it in some way. Where did you get them?
They are made by BestopBestop
I bought them from a local 4X4 shop.
I was able to use the rail system by mounting them with the help of some 1/2 inch plywood. The only thing in the under-seat storage is some bolt heads. They recline but not very far.
I love may seat and can spend hours without strain. My legs are close to the table top, which puts the computer in a good place for the wrists.
The mounting does not have to super strong because the seat is not used while driving. The seat does not pivot.

RE: Replacing the Dinette with a recliner or couch

Most dinettes are uncomfortable for long tern sitting. When I had my Northstar I installed a couple of aftermarket Jeep seats from Bestop. The mod was quite successful.

When I acquired a 10-8 Snowriver I continued the automotive seat idea to add comfort when I spend a lot of time with my laptop working with photos. My wife decided she did not want a new seat. She likes to sit with her feet extended on the dinette seat bottom. For reading she mostly goes to the cabover bed.
The automotive seat are easy to install because they are adjustable without having a thick base.

RE: Why the low F450 GVWR?

It seems people are focusing on the 450 number. What is the difference between the F450 people complain they can't get anymore, and the F550 pickup?
Mark.
You can't get a 550 with a pickup bed, only a cab-chassis. Some folks buy the CC 450 or CC 550 and then buy a big dollar custom bed.

RE: Why the low F450 GVWR?

Ford has made a joke of the 2011 F-450. It is a re-badged F-350 that is no longer a medium duty truck with a pickup bed.
The change from a Dana 110 to a Dana 80 version drive axle is not acceptable. The change from 19.5 to 17 inch wheels further diminishes the truck. This means they have reduced the swept area of the brakes. No more real truck tires. The wide steer axle may to be gone.

RE: Water from lakes and creeks

I have been concerned about the safety of the water when in campgrounds. I'm sure that every campground owner or government official will say that their water is safe, but the truth is that there is a lot of bad water out there. After some research, I found that most filters take out the big stuff and the bad taste. However, water purification is another matter, and only a few systems provide pure water as defined by the EPA and CDC.
I have settled a system called Nature Pure. It mounts under your sink and "Ts" into the general water system after the pump. It has its own faucet spout and provides safe drinking water (plus it takes out chlorine taste). When filling the main water tank from a questionable source I have been using a Doulton ceramic filter.
For filling a fresh water tank from a stream or lake I would say that it is imperative to fill with a good pre-filter and then a purifier for drinking water.

RE: Rain, Wind, and Snow

Mike,
I was in a high wind ice storm in Texas where the side would have never gone back in if it had been deployed. Two inches of ice developed on the windward side. As others have said, it is very important to be able to function with the slide left in.

RE: MPG with toad?

I often tow a 4300 lbs Jeep Rubicon, and the mileage drops from 1 to 1.5 mpg, which is about 12 percent.
The killer for RVs is frontal area and speed. Weight is not the biggest factor.

RE: F-450

Read up on the new 2011 F series I think this will be the Ultimate Truck.Coming this spring.
Ifyou are looking to the 2011 models, I would consider the Ram 4500 because Ford is going to ruin the F450 pickup by de-rating the 450 pickup.
People who want a real F450 better buy one before the 2011 Ford pickups come out. Ford will no longer have a real medium–duty F450 in the lineup. Ford has put a 450 badge on a light–duty F350. The change from a Dana 110 to a Dana 80 version drive axle is not acceptable. The change from 19.5 to 17 inch wheels further diminishes the truck. This means they have reduced the swept area of the brakes. The wide steer axle seems to be gone.
Did Ford have Jaguar spec out the new F450? Or, maybe it was the freaks at the EPA
No thanks, I’ll be grateful for the 2008 F450 that I have, fuel mileage is not that big a deal.

RE: Price of Truck Camper vs Trailer

Go with a TT to get the most bang for the buck. TCs are only about 3 to 4 percent of the market. Being a specialty item tends to increase cost. The TC is generally much better made than most trailers. Versatility is the byword for the TC. If you don't boondock in the deep back country or use rough roads a TT is fine. If you don't ever tow other things like boats or ATVs. The TT is good.
You will find in this thread that TC owners are passionate about their reasons for having a TC.

RE: Folding grab handle options??

Here is my solution for old and infirm people:
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u164/Clattertruck/_DSC4440Handle72-1.jpg
I added the extention so that a hand can be on it from from the bottom to the top of the stairs.
The handle will fold against the door.

RE: Honda Ridgeline

I have a friend who tows a very light TT (one of those little teardrop units). The Ridgeline gives 9 mpg, which is about the same as my son gets with a Ford Expedition 5.4 with a 6000 lb TT.
He has found the the Honda is very much lacking when off the road because it does not have a low rangew transfer. If 9 mpg is OK, one might as well drive a real truck.
